Library and FHS Lookups / Kew ookup request please >>>
« on: Wednesday 05 September 12 06:31 BST (UK)  »
HI all, I've never been there, and quite frankly for what info they hold regarding my family it's not going to be worth the expense.

However, there is a set of documents there relating to a law case surrounding inheritence, and it is possible it will give a reasonable amount of info about some family.

I submitted a request for the documentation to be copied, but they have come back stating it is too much for them too copy, so they are suggesting I pay for either a researcher to do it, or use their own researchers - from a post I have made, it looks likely that Kew will be charging the best part of £60+ to do the copying, but there may be an independent who could do it for around £20-£40.

I have no idea about the number of pages they have, but I do at least have the reference - J 90/92 - it's to do with a court case relating to Richard Hobby and his daughter's inheritance.

If someone is going, and are looking at that section of papers, would they mind checking it out for me?

I'd like to know the number of pages it contains as a first stop, and if I can be really cheeky, if someone was able to photograph them and e-mail them to me, I would be extremely grateful  ;D

Monmouthshire / Golden Lion Inn, Abergavenny >>

hi all, I've come across a newspaper article recently that showed a relative of mine, Richard Hobby, was either the landlord or owner of this pub prior to 1832, but nothing more specific than that.

He was imprisoned for being an insolvent debtor around the time he owned it, and was wondering if anyone would know if there are any trade directories that would pinpoint the time he owned/ran the pub?

I know it was in Frogmore Street, and is now a Cafe Nisse

Thanks in advance

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage look-up - circa 1815ish - Hughes >>
« on: Monday 27 August 12 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, revisiting this line and was wondering if anyone could help?

Got a Timothy Hughes married to an Esther (Unknown). Esther was born c1794 in Peterchurch, Herefordshire, and they had two children (Esther, 1819, Peterchurch & Edwin, 1821, Peterchurch).

It looks likely that Timothy died between 1821 and 1824 as Esther remarries a Charles Pritchard in 1824 in Peterchurch.

She has two more children with Charles (Catharine, 1826 & William, 1830).

I have no idea if they married around the Peterchurch area, but I hope so - anyone able to help or point me in the right direction? Thanks

Glamorganshire / Old photo's found in Maesteg >>
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 10:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, very little info as I only spotted the notice in Tesco in Maesteg late last night.

Basically, someone has found a stack of photo's in the attic of an unnamed house in Maesteg that they have just moved into and handed them into the family history/research centre in the sports centre.

There is a photocopy of one with a notice in Tesco Maesteg, but it's not good enough for my camera phone to take a photo to reproduce, but it is probably good enough for someone to recognise the people. The photo shows 4 children (I think) crouching behing each other in a field. I'd suggest that it is probably somewhere between the 1940's to 1960's based on the haircuts/clothing, but can't be more specific.

If you're after more info, it says to ring the sports centre

The Common Room / Insolvency in the 19th Century >>
« on: Sunday 22 April 12 10:00 BST (UK)  »
Noticed the bankruptcy topic, and thought I'd post this.

I came across a will a while ago for a very distant grandparent who left lands/properties worth £42000 nowadays. There was a case-law attributed to it as it meant his eldest daughter inheriting, and this apparently wasn't the done thing.

I have now come across newspaper articles that show this same person was imprisoned in Fleet due to insolvency, and that his lands were up for auction. Now I don't know if they were actually auctioned, but I'm at a loss as to how he would be able to leave properties to family if they were auctioned due to his insolvency?

Technical Help / Family Tree Maker V4 - problem with Ancestry >>
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I've recently tried this out, and have been very impressed with the Ancestry matches, particularly the tree matches.

As such, I've now activated the Ancestry membership (one month free). However, when I click on a tree that I want to e-mail the owner about, or view a census match, it asks me to take out the 14 day free trial (enter card details, etc).

Am I missing something? I purposely waited to activate the account so I could amass as many of my family members as possible on here and really take advantage of the membership linked directly to my tree, but it looks like a complete waste of time.

Carmarthenshire / Conwil Elvet - where can I find baptism records >>
« on: Friday 03 February 12 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
Or christening records even - not sure of the denomination yet!

Completely new area for me again - look like a gt x 4 grandfather came from Conwil Elvet, but as his surname was Hughes, and I don't have hs wife's surname yet (waiting on a birth certificate for a child), I've not tracked down a marriage yet.

Thanks!

Herefordshire / Lookng for 1827 indentures???
« on: Tuesday 10 January 12 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I am wondering if anyone would happen to know where I could find indentures dated 2nd and 3rd March 1827???

The indentures relate to land being inherited or given (don't know which) to relatives of mine in the village of Byford.

I'd like to identify the location of the land in essence, unless someone out there would know of an easier way to find out? I don't live locally, but if the records are available in Hereford, I can always pop up at some time.

I also know that some (possibly all) of the land was sold on 1st February 1832 for £3000 (I assume this is a large tract of land), so again I assume that there are more records somewhere for this sale too, but I'm not sure if those documents would be held where the indentures are too.

Sorry for the ramblng - I know you want to help me out  ;)
