The Common Room / Bakes giving me headaches!!!!
« on: Monday 30 January 12 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have just found some very puzzling information and would like some ideas on what could be going on please.

John Bakes married Sarah Wilson 31st Aug 1817 at Bradford Cathedral. Both single, witnesses were John Barker and Jonas Tasker.

They appear in later census, with their children and everything appears as it should be.

Now the headache. Whilst searching for the wedding of John and Sarah I also found the wedding of William Bakes to a Sarah Wilson on 4th September 1820. Both single, witness....yes, you guessed it, John Barker and Jonas Tasker.

According to the records I have found John had a brother William, who married a Hannah Lee in 1820.

Whilst it is possible a William Bakes married a Sarah Wilson in the same church as John married and it is all just coincidence....but the witnesses being the same is just too much of a coincidence.

Can anyone possibly shed some light on this please because my brain is a little frazzled!!

Thanks

Colleen

The Common Room / Was he a criminal
« on: Friday 23 September 11 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have Benjamin Emmett born 1840, Bowling Bradford on the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1881 census.
He married an Emma Stevenson and in 1891 Emma is with her daughter Sarah, son in law Samuel and Grandson Edwin in Pudsey, Bradford.
In the 1891 census she appears as married, but there is no sign of Benjamin with them, and I am unable to locate him or a death for him.

However, I have found on the criminal registers for Dec 1885 North Yorkshire a Benjamin Emmett, sentenced for what looks like 15 'catr' months. (No idea what 'catr' means)
Another Benjamin Emmett then appears in the criminal registers for Feb 1887 in  West Yorkshire for Larceny, sentenced for 3 'catr' months.

I am unsure if this is my Benjamin, and also the time-scale between the two offences is only 14 months so I am unsure if this is the same man.

If anyone could point me in the direction of how to obtain more information, or help find Benjamin in 1891 I would greatly appreciate it.

Kind Regards

Colleen

The Common Room / Fairbrace puzzle
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 22:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Am doing so research for my Brother in Law and have hit a wall.

Henry E Fairbrace married Emily Isabella Grace Terry in 1928 in Poplar, Middlesex

Emily was born in Dec 1904.

My problem is that it appears they had the first of many children from 1921 onwards, yet didn't marry until 1928 and can not see anything to suggest they were to another Fairbrace-Terry marriage so am unsure what to make of this.

I also am unable to find a Birth for Henry E Fairbrace anywhere!

Can anyone with a fresh set of eyes, or a little more grey matter help in finding Henry's birth please.

Many Thanks

Colleen

World War One / WW1 death not on CWGC
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 12:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

I have discovered my G G Grandfather John Martin died on 06/11/1918 at Murree India.
He served with the Duke of Wellingtons, West Riding Regiment in the 1st Battalion, no; 9029.
I have found his death on Ancestry but it is not on the CWGC.
Another John Martin  with the middle name muir also died the same date..but it is not the same man. My John Martin was John Henry and was born in Bridliington.
I am wondering if I am missing an obvious reason for his not being on the CWGC. Sadly I am unable to locate service records either for him.

Can anyone advise as to why he is not on the CWGC.

Kind Regards

World War One / Ypres-Royal Scots Fusiliers
« on: Monday 07 February 11 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

I am wondering if anyone can help me.
I am researching a ancestor (in-law) and his death was recorded on the Menin Gate at Ypres.
He died 1/1/1915, and according to the cwgc his name appears on two plates. I am a little confused why he would appear twice?
Also he served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers, but on another site it states he was a pow since died, and recorded again at Ypres.

Could anyone please shed some light on why his name is recorded twice on the plates, where he may have been held pow and also what role the Scots Fusiliers played at Ypres.

I know this is a bit of a task, and am extremely grateful

Kind Regards

Colleen
