Devon / John Saunders
« on: Tuesday 28 January 20 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings.

In the course of my genealogy perambulations, I've come across a puzzle.

Somewhere/somewhen a John Saunders and his wife Ann had three (that I've found) children.
1. Penelope, bap South Molton 11 Jan 1749/50
2. Grace, bap South Molton  15 Nov 1752, buried South Molton 31 Jul 1755
3. Philippa Hele, bap 4 Nov 1756 South Molton, married John Quartly 8 Aug 1784 South Molton.

The marriage of John Saunders to Ann is proving somewhat difficult to find. Going by baptism dates, it's possible that the John/Ann marriage took place about 1747.

I've done the following:
Checked FindMyPast marriages both for Devon and for all records, Ancestry for everything in England, Familysearch including some records in the catalog. Also DFHS parishes that are not on FindMyPast, some are missing the dates that are useful.
John's will is maybe there, but there are too many to get an accurate handle on one. Of those I have been able to see (in Worthy's Wills), names don't match, and lots were destroyed.

A tree on Ancestry has him marrying an Ann Bate, but no proof. The middle name of Philippa may provide a clue, but it hasn't helped so far.

Does anyone have some ideas as to further records that can be looked for?

Best regards, Keith Jeffery

Devon / Sidbury
« on: Saturday 28 December 19 06:52 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings,
First and most important, Merry Xmas (a bit belated) and a happy New Year to all here......

So to my question.....

Does anyone know if the Sidbury Parish Registers are available on line? There is nothing on either Ancestry or Findmypast. Familysearch has partial transcripts in the catalog and the OPC has lookups for records from about 1813. There are supposed to be BTs from the early 1600s.

I'm looking for records for members of the Walrond family, particularly from the mid 1600s to the mid 1700s.

Best, Keith Jeffery

Armed Forces / Meaning of exc. and h.p.
« on: Monday 26 August 19 03:53 BST (UK)  »
I have an entry from the United Service Magazine for September 1831 as follows:

30th Foot. Brev. Lieut-Col Edward Anthony Angelo, from h. p. of the Newfoundland Fencibles, to be Capt. vice Charles Wynne Barrow who exc.

Does this mean that Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Edward Anthony Angelo, a half pay (h.p.) officer with the Newfoundland Fencibles has swapped (exc. - exchanged?) with Captain Charles Wynne Barrow of the 30th Foot?

Thank you all kindly

Australia / South Australia death at Redruth
« on: Thursday 08 August 19 01:12 BST (UK)  »
A quick question...

I have the South Australia death of a John Darby Cave at Redruth in 1899. Does this mean that he died in the jail or was there a district/suburb called Redruth at the time?

Thank you kindly....

Kent / Wellers from Tonbridge (and other places)
« on: Sunday 14 July 19 04:59 BST (UK)  »
Greetings,

I'm putting this request in the Kent forum, even though I know that the event I'm looking for may not have taken place there. It concerns a member of the Weller family from Tonbridge in the 1600s, so it may not be able to be resolved.

I'm looking for a possible first wife for one Thomas Weller who married an Elizabeth Legat(e) on 27 June 1661 at St Olaves, Hart Street, London (the marriage is listed in the Tonbridge PRs on FindMyPast as having taken place in London. The St Olave PRs have the marriage) and went on to have 11 children together about half of whom died young.

Having set the scene:
Prior to 1661, the Tonbridge PRs have two children with the father Thomas Weller. None of the PR entries for any of Thomas's children have his wife's name. These two children are Thomas, baptized 1656 and died 1657 and Richard, baptized 1 September 1659 and died 1666. On 5 September 1659 there is a burial at Tonbridge, "The wife of Thomas Weller". All this fits together pretty neatly, particularly the death in 1659 and a possible remarriage in 1661.
I'm trying to find out who this wife was. Is she the first wife of Thomas who married Elizabeth Legat(e) or is she the wife of another Thomas Weller? Other than the above burial entry, I can't find any other reference to her. I've looked at Kent PRs (FindMyPast have an extensive set of them), several Weller histories, the Familysearch cattle dog and some of Burke's books. I haven't yet found Thomas's will.
If there's someone out there who knows the answer to this, I'd appreciate hints as to where I can go... (yeah, I know.....I know...... ;D.)

Thanks kindly to SKS for any information.

Somerset / What is Katherine's surname?
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Attached is a couple of marriages from Blackford. I'm trying to work out Katherine's surname but am having a great deal of difficulty with one or two letters. If anyone knows what Katherine's surname is or may be, that would be great.
Thank you all kindly.

Somerset / Baker burials at Ilminster
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 02:58 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings.
I'm looking for a couple of burials at Ilminster. They are supposed to have taken place at the Old Meeting (Presbyterian) which I believe is now an Arts Centre.
In a book called Burke's Colonial Heritage (?) the following were buried:
John Baker of Ilminster, August 1852
Mary Anne Baker nee Giffard his wife, January 1843
Both at the Old Meeting.
So to my questions....
Does the graveyard still exist? It's supposed to contain some of the priests and some of the town luminaries. Early records indicate that you passed through the graveyard on the way to the church entrance.
Are any of the grave stones recorded anywhere?
The records are on Ancestry up to 1837. Does anyone know what happened to newer records? They don't seem to be on the Non denominational web site either.

I'm about to send an email to the South West Heritage Trust to see if they can help.

Thank you and kind regards,
Keith Jeffery

Somerset / At Odcombe Somerset
« on: Friday 25 January 19 03:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, flight of fancy time.....

I'm looking for information regarding 3 people with entries in the Odcombe PRs.

Somewhere/somewhen Revd James Richards married Margaret <surname unknown>. He became the Rector at Odcombe and died in 1759 at Odcombe. He was buried in the church chancel.

I'm looking for information on the marriage and where they may have come from.

Margaret then remarried (1760 at Odcombe) to John Donne. They had two children I can find, Margaret (1761) and Elizabeth (1765). She died in 1780 and was buried with her first husband James Richards in the church chancel.

I'm looking for any information on John Donne, as his daughter Elizabeth married James Baker of the Baker family of Chiselborough/Ilton etc.

Thank you all most kindly,
Keith Jeffery

Somerset / James Baker Marriage License
« on: Saturday 19 January 19 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings,
I've attached a marriage license for a James Baker and Elizabeth Broom for a marriage in 1690.
Towards the bottom it says that they are to marry in the Cathedral Church of <somewhere or other>.

Can anyone decipher the <somewhere or other>?.

This Baker family is giving me some frustrations as many of their marriages and burials can't be found and Burke's Colonial Gentry give many tantalising clues but is unfortunately, to some extent, error prone.

Thank you kindly, Keith Jeffery
