Dorset Family History Society will be hosting a talk on Tuesday 20th September 2022 at 7.30 p.m. by MIKE RANDALL entitled ‘TRANSPORTED PRISONERS OF DORSET’.

Mike focuses on prisoners transported from Dorset, but is particularly interested in what happened to the families that were left behind, who became the forgotten ones. Mike feels they need remembering and includes a particular case study of a family of children from Lytchett Minster. It is a sad story that highlights the impact of transportation.

Mike Randall is a retired headteacher but is still involved with schools across Dorset. He also does voluntary work at Shire Hall Courthouse Museum in Dorchester, where he has researched over 500 transported prisoners. Mike has studied and researched genealogy for over 50 years and had articles published in Family Tree Magazine.

PLEASE NOTE: This meeting will be our first face-to-face meeting back at St George’s Church Hall, Darby's Lane, Oakdale, Poole, Dorset BH15 3EU.

Please check members E-news or the website www.dorsetfhs.org.uk should there be any last minute  changes.

Entry is £3.00.

EVERYONE WELCOME.

ON-LINE SPEAKER is DR. NICK BARRETT with a talk entitled ‘THE MISTS OF TIME - SOURCES FOR MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN GENEALOGY’.

Nick will provide an overview of the key sources we can use to trace  medieval and early modern ancestors prior to the 18th Century, with a  summary of some of the required research skills and practical  challenges you’ll need. He also provides an overview of the manorial  system, which affected the way most of our ancestors lived, as well as  records created by local and national government in which our  relatives may appear.

Dr Nick Barratt obtained a PhD in history in 1996 from King’s College  London. He began working in television soon afterwards, for the BBC as  a specialised archive researcher on a number of programmes including  ‘House Detectives’. He is probably best known to us as leading the  team of researchers for the first four series of ‘Who Do You Think You  Are’. Nick continues to provide expert research and heritage services  along with lectures and consultancy, and has written several books.

Dorset Family History Society is hosting an on-line Zoom talk on Tuesday 21st June 2022 from 7.30p.m. - 9.15p.m. (approx.)

ON-LINE SPEAKER is SALLY MACDOUGALL with a talk entitled ‘DATING FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS - LOOKING FOR CLUES’.

Using many of her own family photographs, Sally looks at how to use techniques to read the clues and build a case for each image, in order to give a “best guess” date and hopefully help identify the sitter. Sally takes a light-hearted look at images ranging from the 1840’s to the 1900’s with many humorous and amazing images she has collected.

Sally may be better known to some of you as Sally Skilton from DevonFHS. Originally from the Midlands she has lived in Devon for over 36 years. She joined Devon Family History Society in the 80’s going on to serve on the committees and working parties. Sally has been Events Co-ordinator and is currently Editor. In her ‘spare time’ Sally works as a graphic designer, enjoys dancing and the study of historical costume, which has helped with her interest in her family photographs.
