Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Susan G. Robertson of Peterhead
« on: Tuesday 03 March 09 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Please forgive me if I have posted on the wrong board.

Great Grandfather Charles Gouch (born Norfolk) married Susan G. (we think Robertson).  Susan was born in Peterhead in approximately 1825.  We can only surmise her surname was Robertson because this was the middle name given to her sons.

We havent been able to trace her marriage to Charles Gouch, although their first son was born at North Shields, Northumberland (another fishing port) in June 1850.

Would be extremely grateful if anyone can find information regarding Susan on Scottish Census.  If it helps her children were called John Joseph; Mary Jane; James Robertson Goauch/ George Robertson Gouch; Sarah Ann and Maria.

Looking forward to your response.

Thank you.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Marriage of Samuel Hartell
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
This has got my head hurting.  Been looking for on and off three weeks and tried every combination I can think of.

Samuel Hartell born in Sedgley, Staffordshire in 1863.  Shown on the 1901 and 1911 Census living at 66 Lamb Lane, Manchester.  Married to an Esther.  Esther was born in 1863 in Manchester according to the Census. On the 1911 Census still at 66 Lamb Lane, Manchester but the head of the household is shown as Henry Copperwaite (Wid).  Samuel is shown as his Son in law and Esther as the daughter of Henry Copperwaite (68).

On the 1911 Census their youngest daughter Frances (who was known in later years as Frances) was shown as Fanny.  Dont know if this is a red herring because Henry Copperwaits wife was called Fanny.

I cant find Esther as an Esther Copperswaite any where.  I cannot find a marriage for Samuel Hartell anywhere.

Samuel and Esther's  eldest child Elizabeth was born during the December quarter of 1898 within the district of Prestwich, Lancashire.

Can you please help me find the marriage of Samuel and Esther which hopefull will lead us to the family of Esther and her maiden name.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Alternative to FTM
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 11:48 GMT (UK)  »
I currently use FTM 2005 Deluxe.  I like the way you can back up to CD.  I dont upload any of my trees to the internet.

I have thought about upgrading but looking around the various forum FTM 2008 had its problems and I would have considerable problems transferring over the data from my 2005 edition to the 2009 edition.

This has led me to give serious consideration to an alternative to FTM, but I have no experience of anything else on offer and when I do choose, how would I be able to transfer over all the data and scrapbook photos to the new software?

Would welcome your comments and advice.

United States of America / Isaac Raymond from Devon
« on: Friday 16 January 09 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Isaac Raymond who was born in 1830 at Whitchurch in Devon.  Most of his brothers moved away from the area in the 1850s and I wondered if Isaac had travelled to America.

Can anyone please tell me if there is any trace of his emigration to USA

Thank you.

World War One / Where was he between 1916 and 1918
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
Research has shown that  Great Uncle Matthew  was deemed to have been enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle on the 2nd March 1916 , his service number was 78973.  A copy of his service record shows that he was Called up for Service on 11th May 1918

Looking at the record I have interpretted it to read that he was posted to Northumberland Fusiliers Depot 4 on the 15th May, 1918

I have attached a copy of this part of his records because I have difficulty making out the rest.

He was transferred to the  15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry during September 1918 and was killed in action on the 23rd October 1918.

I would appreciate any comments about details of his various postings, but just wondered where he was between March 1916 and May 1918.

World War One / Payment of Pension
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
When a solider was killed in action, I understand that a pension was paid.  I have details of the Rates of allowance paid:- Separation Allowance and Allotment of pay of Twenty five shillings.

This soldier was killed in action on the 23rd October 1918 and the allowance was to be paid to his mother.

Under "Date to which the allowances will be paid there is the hand written date: 26.5.19

It doesnt say 1920 1930, just 19

Question:  How many years would this payment be made to this soldiers mother?
