Alexander McLeod born 1772 - abt 1825 in Nigg ROC, was married or had a relationship with Christina McCulloch 1779 Nigg ROC - 12 May 1857 Forres, Moray.  Served in military bet 30 Jul 1797 and 15 Apr 1817.  He received a gun shot wound in action on the Heights of LaSarge, Portugal and he served at Battle of Waterloo.

Someone wrote me that he was a 'writer' and 'master tailor'.  Tailor is on his military records.   They had 7 children all born in Nigg ROC except where mentioned: Ann b.1 Jan 1801 married Andrew McLeod; Donald M(a)cLeod 27 Oct 1802 - 29 Mar 1881 Lethenhill married to Elizabeth Phillip; Christian 16 Nov 1804 - 14 Dec 1883 Elgin married James Glass (his 2nd marriage); William MacLeod 1816 - 20 Dec 1896 married to Margaret McKenzie; Williamina McLeod 1817 - 16 Jun 1886; Ann Duff McLeod 1824 - 16 Nov 1889; and Alexander McLeod 1826 Duffus, Moray - 31 Aug 1875.

I don't know his date or location of death.  Alexander, in my line, was born in 1826.

My suspicion is he is a son of Sgt Donald McLeod 1688-1796.  Reason for this suspicion is that Donald MacLeod of Geanies, Tain ROC lawyer, helped Sgt Donald get a pension from the King.  Sgt Donald recruited in Ross-shire and north, bragged about many sons serving in army, etc..

Alexander's wife Christina is a daughter of Andrew McCulloch (even though death cert indicates William) and Ann Duff, William McCulloch and Jennet Gallie grandparents.  William Duff being Ann Duff's father.  Informant on her death cert was her son William MacLeod.

Ann McLeod's husband Andrew had a brother Donald McLeod married to Christina McLeod; and a sister Margaret McLeod married to Hugh McLeod.  Finlay McLeod and Margaret Ross are this Andrew's grandparents.  So you should be able to tell from this that they account for a lot of McLeods in Easter Ross.

I have this family in the 1861 census.

Andrew McLeod age 44 born 1817 is head and a fisherman.
Ann age 38 born 1823 wife
Dolina age 18, James age 14, Duncan age 12, Ann age 10, Andrew 8, Thomas 6, and Helen 4 all born in Nigg ROC.

I believe Andrew's parents are Andrew McLeod born 1796- and Elizabeth (Betsy) McLeod born 1 May 1804 - 1887 Nigg - Elizabeth (Betsy) McLeod's parents are Robert McLeod and Helen Dingwall.

Andrew's sister Ann has a son Alexander 07 JAN 1864 Spott,East Lothian,Scotland.  Not sure how I figured that out.  I believe Andrew's younger brother Andrew died in 1816 in Nigg ROC.

I haven't been able to find anything more on this family and would appreciate any help.  Thanking you in advance.

Ross & Cromarty / Grandparents of James Campbell McLeod (20 Feb 1871 - bef 1924)
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have been investigating James Campbell McLeod (also spelt MacLeod) of Nigg, ROC.  He married Elizabeth Fraser (2 May 1868, Nigg - bef 1924) on 25 Dec 1891 in Logie-Easter, ROC.

Parent names for James were James McLeod and Jessie Campbell.  Parent names for Elizabeth were Alexander Fraser and Jessie Macandy.

In 1881 census Jessie Campbell appears to have married twice once with Donald McLeod on 6 Dec 1861 in Nigg, ROC and the second seems like a relationship.  Five children from the marriage Catherine, Elizabeth, David, Janet, and Flora and then James Campbell McLeod.  Donald McLeod died 15 May 1867.  Donald's mother was Janet  or Jennet Fraser, the mother-in-law on 1881 census.

They lived in Cromarty Ferry, Nigg, ROC.  I cannot find James McLeod's parents.  There is a James McLeod of Cromarty Ferry, Nigg with parents Andrew McLeod and Isabella Skinner.  However, his wife Ann Ross (1822-1895) would still have been alive when James Campbell McLeod was born in 1871.

I would like to definitively sort this out but am not sure what to make of this.  Can anyone help?

Ross & Cromarty / Family of Donald McLeod and Martha Hossack (married 1845) Cromarty
« on: Friday 17 December 21 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for James McLeod b. 29 Nov 1847, Kenneth b. 5 Mar 1850, and Donald b. 4 Nov 1851 plus the dad Donald McLeod, a sailor, born 1825 or 1826.  Mother Martha Hossack died 2 March 1857.  The family were living with the grandmother Catherine Hossack (nee Hogg).  The grandmother died 21 Feb 1857.  There is one baptized Donald McLeod born in Cromarty in 1823 and he was a baker and died in Rosskeen.

Is it likely the entire family was whiped out in 1857 or can anyone find this family?  I did happen to have downloaded the Ancestry 1851 census which shows Donald 25, James 3, Kenneth 1, and confuses Martha.  However, this did not resolve birth location of Donald snr.  I think it unlikely he is from Stornoway.

This is also shown on FamilySearch.org:
1851 SHORE CROMARTY, ROSS AND CROMARTY Martha is shown with her husband Donald McLeod shown as (Son-in-Law), a Seaman aged 25 years old born 1826 along with three of their children 1) James 3 born 1847, 2) Kenneth 1 born 1850, 3) Donald 0 years born 1851. They are living with Martha's mother Catherine Hossack, shown as a WIDOW aged 62 years old born 1789 Cromarty.

DEATH 2 MARCH 1857 shown as Martha McLeod, as aged 40 years old when she died (birth 1817) her parents are shown as James Hossack a Fisherman and Catherine Hogg. Informant cousin Robert Hogg.

Ross & Cromarty / 1861 census Kilmuir-Easter Donald McLeod born 1858 plus family
« on: Friday 03 December 21 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone who has general access to 1861 census let me know the McLeods and if the families are related.  I have attached screenshots:

From Scotland's People index to 1861 census I can see:
John 8, Hugh 3, Jessie 33, Andrew 1, Hugh 35, Alexanderina 10, Hugh 6, Bella 4, Alexina 35, Donald 3, and Andrew 30.  They have the same ref. (not sure what that means).

Andrew McLeod and Alexina McLeod are married.
Hugh McLeod and Jessie McDonald are married.

Thanks.

Ross & Cromarty / Mary McLeod (abt 1771-) Tarbat, ROC
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1841 census Mary McLeod is aged 70 and is living with Donald, a weaver, and Janet McLeod in Rockfield Village.  I looked up the 1851 census for Tarbat and Donald's birth place is Api?????, ROC.

I have a Donald McLeod married to Janet McLeod.  Donald weaver died in Tarbat in 1866 aged 65.  He is a widower but wife's name not given.  His father is Robert McLeod.  The informant is son Donald born 1843 who died in Cromarty Ferry 12 Sep 1912.  This leads me to believe Mary McLeod whom I thought was Donald Sr.'s mother could be his mother-in-law.  John McLeod married to Margaret Vass also of Tarbat has parents Neil McLeod and Mary.

I am wondering if anyone can help figure out Mary's maiden name, which place Api?????, ROC is, and hopefully link John McLeod (1796 Geanies, Tarbat - 1886 Tarbat) to Donald McLeod (1801-1866).  There is a Donald McLeod born 26 Oct 1802 in Tarbat.

Ross & Cromarty / MCLEOD, DINGWALL, and ROSS surnames
« on: Wednesday 06 October 21 21:13 BST (UK)  »
I had been researching Robert McLeod (b. poss. 16 May 1773 Lairg) married to Helen Dingwall (b. abt 1780).  They have a family of eight mostly born in Nigg, Ross & Cromarty.  Roderick b. 12 Feb 1797 died in Nigg 1864, Robert b. 19 Aug 1799.  I have Roderick married to Helen or Elen Ross b. 1789 in Balintracle, Kilmuir-Easter with daughter Euphemia b. 4 Dec 1822 (they appear in 1841 census).  I have three others Andrew b. 3 Jun 1815, John b. 6 Apr 1817, and Isobel b. 14 Apr 1820.  all Kilmuir-Easter.  This Robert b. 1799 is found with John Grant and Jessie or Janet McLeod in  32 Tomnahurich St. Inverness, Inverness, Scotland.  I was unable to find Robert's place of death but think it is Inverness in 1883 aged 73, mother's maiden name Ross.

I have nothing more on any of these children.  If anyone has more info on these people, I would appreciate it.

I have another Robert McLeod married to Elizabeth or Betsy or Betty Dingwall in Knochbain.  Children Charles McLeod b. 12 Oct 1834, Robert b. 14 March 1837, and Alexander b.16 Jun 1839 all Knockbain.  Alexander marries Helen or Elen Ross in Alves, Moray and has a family of Charles, Robert, John, Alexander, and Jessie in Alves, Forres, Elgin.
In 1841 Robert aged 30 OUC shoemaker, Betty 35 OUC, Robert 4 ROC, and Alexander 2 ROC.  Knockbain.  From libindx <http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/people/mainfilter.asp> I found the son Alexander's son Robert:

Occupation : TAILOR
Date of Birth : 28N SEP 1869
Place of Birth : ALVES
Spouse's Name : DAVINA RIACH
Date of Marriage : 07 JAN 1899
Place of Marriage : 95 HIGH STREET ELGIN
Date of Death : 28 JUL 1926
Place of Death : LOSSIEMOUTH

I would like to try and find out where Robert McLeod (grandfather of the above) died.  Who are his parents?  I would also like to find out if Elizabeth or Betsy or Betty Dingwall is related to Helen Dingwall.  How are they related?  Are these McLeods related to the Kilmuir-Easter and Nigg McLeods?

These families have been confused in some family trees.  I am interested because my McLeod ancestors migrated from Nigg, ROC to same area of Moray.
