Lancashire Lookup Requests / Helena Maud ST LEGER - Last seen in St Annes
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I'm having trouble finding out what happened to Helena Maud ST LEGER maiden name QUINN.

I have some information written down by a family member some time ago - sadly no longer with us - which says:

Quote
ran off with St Leger son went to America

I can't find anything on passenger lists, US census or anything else after 1911 where she is in St Annes on Sea working at a school.  She is shown as being married for under 1 year - and possibly having a child but it's unclear - but the Irish Civil Registration shows a marriage JAS 1902 in Dublin South between Helen Maud QUINN and Richard W ST LEGER which could be her.

This is the information I have for her:
Birth JAS 1880 Manchester 8d 267
1881 Census: RG11 3999/9 Page 12
1891 Census: RG12 3269/24 Page 41
1901 Census: RG13 3814/31 Page 8

Any sightings or ideas gratefully received!

I need a second pair of eyes to look at this baptism record.

It's the last entry for May, and I think reads:

Margaret Steward daughter of Simon Steward of [.......................]

I'm stuck with the location and the date although previous transcribers have it as 26th.

Thanks for any assistance,

Lancashire / Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon
« on: Friday 22 July 11 07:37 BST (UK)  »
Being repeated on BBC4 on Tuesday night's at 22:00.  Most of the films relate to Lancashire or the North, they were found in a basement in Blackburn. The first was Tuesday 19th but is still available on iPlayer for those with access.

Series which examines the recent discovery of 800 short films from the Edwardian age. The films have now been rescued after lying hidden in a cellar for over 80 years. Restored to their original clarity, these films shot by pioneering film-makers Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon now take the viewer into a lost world. Dan Cruickshank then uses the films to throw new light on Britain at work and play before the First World War.

1.  19th July - Life and Times: This first programme shows us life in the new cities as well cotton mills and factories.
2.  26th July - Sport and Pleasure: This programme features the first ever film of Manchester United, made within weeks of the club adopting the name of what is the most famous club in the world. It reveals how new leisure time swelled the crowds at exciting sporting events, and how people's extra cash allowed them holidays and fun in Blackpool and at home for the very first time.

Assume that the 3rd and final part (Saints and Sinners) is the week after.

Hi All,

In browsing the new familysearch.org database, England, Cheshire, Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1606-1900, I've found a marriage licence that may refer to a family member.

Freebmd has the marriage as Jun Q 1844 Liverpool 20 309, Isaac Alexander PENNELL to Mary Ann DAVISON
LancashireBMD has Isaac A PEMBELL to Mary A DAVISON Our Lady & St Nicholas & St Anne, 1844

The licence states Isaac Alexander PENNELL to Mary Ann DAVISON issued 19th Jun 1844.

If anyone has access to the marriage register for Our Lady & St Nicholas & St Anne and can obtain the details from the marriage register it would be greatly appreciated - it doesn't look as if the register is available at Preston Records Office.  The marriage would probably have taken place just after the licence was issued - so between 19th June and the end of the month.

Thanks for any help with this,

Jean

A new database has been added to the Familysearch.org site:

England, Cheshire, Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1606-1900

Really useful as this information was previously only available in book form at the records office.

United States of America / Richard PENNELL to New York - when?
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
I'm a little out of my depth when it comes to research abroad, so I'm after some pointers!

In my extended tree I have Richard PENNELL born 20 December 1798 in Cheshire who turns up in New York as Richard PENNELL M.D.  I have been able to find him on the 1850 and 1860 US census records and have found lots of supporting evidence via search engines.

I'd like to try and find out when he arrived in New York.  I have tried looking at various sites for passenger lists but no luck so far.  He married Mary Schroeppel and their first son George Caspar PENNELL was born in 1833.  I haven't yet found a marriage for Richard and Mary.

On his gravestone it says that he became a citizen of the US on 3rd May 1826.  He submitted his dissertation to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the city of New York in April 1821 - this was to obtain his degree as Doctor of Medicine.  The dissertation covers a Typhus epedemic in 1820 so he must have arrived before then.  Is there anywhere online that I can find out any more?

Thanks for any help,

Jean
