Devon / Dartmoor Prison Barracks
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 18:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My GG Grandfather was a prison warder at Dartmoor prison around the 1860's/70's and according to the 1871 Census he was living(with his family) in the "barracks". I presume the buildings them selves have long since gone, but I was wondering if someone had any idea where they were. There looks to be  a road nearby called "Barracks Rd" so I presume they were along that road somewhere, however I'd like to pin point the location I bit more accurately, as it looks to be quite a long road.

Can anyone help please?

Technical Help / Windows 10 update problem keyboard issue
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 20:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was wondering if anybody else had come across a keyboard issue after the (presumably) latest windows 10 update.

The problem I encountered was, after many failed login attempts & resulting lockouts, the keys @ & ~ had changed places with the " & £ keys.  ???

Anyway after much brow beating (and the occasional colourful metaphor :-[ ) I discovered that the keyboard language setting had changed from UK English to US English. Apparently, after a quick google search, Microsoft were aware of this issue.

Devon Lookup Requests / marriage look up - RID
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 18:59 BST (UK)  »

I am trying to find out the maiden name for Elizabeth Rid and I was wondering if somebody could  please look up her marriage to William Rid. I am not sure of the exact year of their marriage but on the 1881 census the eldest of the three children is 13 years. I guess therefore the marriage may have been around 1866 or so.

I'm sort of hoping it is "Wolfendale", but if not I can at least eliminate a line of enquiry.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Merchant Navy document ?
« on: Saturday 03 March 18 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Could somebody please identify what this small document is that was filled out by my Grandfather.
The ship that is named I can identify as the SS Elmina and that it was my Grandfathers 1st Ship. I believe he joined the ship, soon after he completed his apprenticeship in 1923.

It was lovely to find this on the web, & see his signature, but I just wonder what it was for.

Armed Forces / Length of Militia postings
« on: Sunday 25 February 18 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
During the Crimean war, the Cheshire Militia were sent to Plymouth, along with my GG Grandfather. According to information I have found, even after the war had ended they still don't seem to have returned to their native Cheshire, but moreover were sent to various other places. I have always assumed that as they were essentially a part time unit, they would have returned to their families and normal jobs as soon as possible, clearly not the case.

The simple question I have is "was it normal for Militia units to be away for so long?"

In my GG grandfathers case, it was long enough for him to abandon his wife in Cheshire, and re-marry another

The Common Room / Probate Meaning?
« on: Thursday 20 October 16 21:47 BST (UK)  »
I have managed to find several records on Probate registers for various ancestors, but I'm not entirely sure what this means. In the records it basically names the deceased party, a sum of Money and the name of another, presumably close relative or friend.

The question is, is the named person the actual beneficiary, or merely somebody previously asked by the deceased party to distribute the money in accordance with a will.

Armed Forces / Royal Marines 1831
« on: Friday 22 July 16 19:58 BST (UK)  »
I managed to find the Greenwich Hospital entry record for my 4 X great Grandfather, dated 1831.

In the column marked "in what ship wounded, and last served" it looks to show the entry "3rd Div. Royal Marines" but no ship. I'm therefore presume he was on some sort of land based operation & not directly connected to a particular ship. If my assumption is correct I was wondering if any one knew of any where I could look to locate a bit more information on this division of the marines or what they may have been doing in 1831
