Laois (Queens) / Question for Moderators ?
« on: Friday 13 March 09 09:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have just received the personal belongings of a relative of mine , his name was Fr. Seamus Sheeran. He grew up in Durrow, Co. Laois ,Ireland. He was a missionary Priest and was stationed in Port Elizabeth ,South Africa.

In his belongings were some mass cards of family member that died in Co. Laois. Some of the name I don't recognize as family and I was wondering if I could post pics of those mass cards for anyone who might recognize the family name? These mass cards have pictures of the people on them and I thought they might be valuable to anyone researching these people .

Is this okay ?

Thanks,
Megan

Armagh / Carrickaduff , Co. Armagh
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 00:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was looking over my relatives WWI records . He died in Belgium and in 1919 his mother had to fill out forms to receive his medals.

It is on these forms that i have a question . On the form she listes her address as -

Carrickaduff , Castleblayney , Co. Armagh.

My question is - I thought Castleblayney was is Co. Monaghan , am I wrong on this ?

I have relatives on the other side of my family ( Flanigan )and they were from Castleblayney , Co. Monaghan .

Can anyone explain how the townlands are set up and if there are 2 Castleblayneys . I have enclosed a pic of the WWI form that she filled out so see what i am talking about.

Thank you,
Megan

World War One / Naval Records for WWI
« on: Monday 15 December 08 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi ,

I have a relative that asked me to do some research on 2 of his great uncles. I haven't been able to find any Naval records on ancestry .

Can anyone point me in the right direction ? Were the military records all kept in the same place and were they destroyed like the Army records ?

Here is his info

John J. Moriarty
born -  1893 Cork, Ireland
Rank- Stoker 1st Class
Serial - K/18381
Regiment - Royal Navy
Ship -  H M S  Indefatigable
Date of Death - 31 May 1916 - Sea

Son of Patrick and Mary Moriarty, of Greenane, Bere Island, Co. Cork.

I believe he got this information from the CWGC site , but can anyone assist me on how I can find anything else on him.

Thank you,
Megan

Canada / John Johnston and Margaret Humes
« on: Tuesday 09 December 08 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi ,

This is my first time even attempting to search for any canadian records, so please excuse my lack of knowledge. I don't have very much to go on for this family but I will give you all the information I have .

I am trying to search for a marriage and birth of these people .

John Johnston - b. poss 1840's Ireland
Margaret Humes - b. poss the same .

It is said they left Ireland for Canada . They had 2 children -

Mary Johnston - b. in Canada
Willis A. Johnston - b.  5 Mar 1873 in Sault Ste. Marie,Michigan

I am looking to see if there is a marriage for John and Margaret in Canada and possibly a birth for their daughter Mary .

I have Willis Johnston's records up to his death , 24 May 1946 in NYC as he is my great grandfather.

Mary Johnston is said to have become a teacher and taught at one of the Indian reservations in Michigan . I think I might have her on the 1880 US Census in Wells, Michigan as a boarder.

John Johnston either died in Michigan and /or Canada as I cannot find a death for him . But he supposedly died only a few yrs after his sons birth.

I know this is not very much but any help or suggestions on how to figure this out would be great. It is hard to think that I can only get up to my great grandfather in research on this side.

Thank you,
Megan

Armed Forces / Footnote has some WWII records -free in Dec
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 01:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I just wanted to let everybody know that I just received an email from footnote.com and they have some WWII records free to view and download in the month of Dec. ( I think these records but be limited to US , but not sure )

I think most of the records are for the deceased , but I haven't checked out the extent to the records.

I did find my cousins records of his plane going down after a bombing mission . Great stuff - questionaires by survivors , time and location of aircraft , their intended target , etc.

So if anyone had family members that served it might be worthwhile to check it out .

Moderators - please excuse this if I have posted on wrong board ???
