Scotland / William MacGregor, agricultural labourer of Cromdale parish
« on: Monday 02 March 20 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone may know how to break down a brickwall of mine. I am trying to find out who the parents of my dad's earliest ancestor in his maternal line, William MacGregor, are, but have met with little success so far. According to most of the census returns for him and his family, he was born in Dundee some time between 1797 and 1806. He and his wife, Janet Innes, married in Cromdale in 1831, so there are no parents indicated on the marriage record. He died sometime between 1871 and 1881 when Janet appears as a widowed head of household, but I have been completely unable to unearth his death record, which would have the necessary information. I've have tried every variation of his surname I can think of, but all the likely Williams whose records I have accessed have turned out to be the wrong man. Are there perhaps any other records available on Scotland's People that could shed light on who his parents might have been?

Armed Forces / F.E. Nettleton R.A.F.V.R.
« on: Tuesday 18 February 20 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me dig up some more detail on this gentleman.
His full names are Francis Edward Nettleton and he married Sheila MacGregor Hamilton in Edinburgh in 1941. He seems to have been taken prisoner around late 1943 or 1944, by which time he held the rank of Warrant Officer, however I can find nothing at all about when or where he was captured, or what squadron he was in. I assume that he had been released by 1946 as his first child was born in the early part of that year. He died in 1994.

Dorset / Dr Oswald of "Nithsdale," Kinson
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 15:38 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything at all about this man? His full names were John Alexander Ramsay Oswald and he trained as a doctor in Scotland. He resigned from his post at the Perth Royal Infirmary in 1924, just before his marriage, and he and his wife relocated to Kinson, Bournemouth. Their first child was born at Tuckton Lodge nearby in 1927, but I am struggling to find out anything at all about him or his professional career from this point on. He died in the early 1930s but his wife remained in Bournemouth.

South Africa / William Taylor MacGregor Cape Town 1930s
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 11:17 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me to find out more about the William Taylor MacGregor who died in Cape Town in 1936. His Civil Deaths notice says he was born in Scotland circa 1871, married, and a proof reader for the Cape Times newspaper. He died at Monte Rosa in the Gardens. There are no probate documents available for him on FamilySearch, only a Maitland Cemetery burial record, which is frustrating as the former would give me the details I need to establish whether he's "one of mine." The parents of "my" fella were John MacGregor and Isabella Taylor, and William was born in Edinburgh in 1869.

Midlothian / Missing MacGregors
« on: Tuesday 28 January 20 08:35 GMT (UK)  »
I would be eternally grateful if some kind soul would be willing to look for the deaths of the following MacGregor siblings for me, as this may help to fill in gaping holes in my tree. Their parents were John MacGregor and Isabella Taylor and all were born in Edinburgh:
Isabella Henderson MacGregor b. 13 Feb 1865
Jessie Innes MacGregor b. 26 Jan 1867
William Taylor MacGregor b. 11 Mar 1869
Rankine Forrest MacGregor b. 28 Mar 1876
Patrick Watson MacGregor b. 1877
I have tried tracking them down by trawling through newspaper articles and a variety of other online records but have drawn a complete blank so far.

South Africa / Scottish school teachers in Boer War concentration camps
« on: Sunday 19 January 20 12:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found out that my father's maternal grandfather's sister was one of 33 Scottish elementary school teachers selected, in 1901, to teach at the above-mentioned camps. Her name was Margaret Beveridge Henderson MacGregor and apparently she later became a Schools Inspector and went out to Rhodesia in this role some time in the (early?) 1930s. (My father's older sister was at Eveline School in Bulawayo when Margaret arrived for an inspection, and tried to avoid her great aunt's eye by hiding behind a pillar, I am told.) Does anyone know whether there was a list made of where each of these teachers were sent once they arrived in South Africa?

Ireland / Cooper marriage and birth - Dublin
« on: Wednesday 10 April 19 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Is there some kind soul who would be willing to look for the marriage, in Dublin, of one Robert Cooper to a Bridget Burke/Bourke between 1799 and 1806, and the subsequent birth/baptism of their daughter Sarah there, for me? I believe that Robert may have been in either the 93rd Regiment of Foot, or the 72nd Regiment of Foot, both of which were stationed in Ireland during that time frame, but have drawn a complete blank with Regimental Marriages and Births, so this is a last desperate shot at finding the info.

Many thanks, in advance.

South Africa / Goodman, Beart and Company, Rissik Street, Johannesburg
« on: Wednesday 13 March 19 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about this company and what it did/sold? The building was, I believe, built around 1887 or so, and I think the Beart mentioned in the business's name may have been William John Beart, who moved to the Transvaal from Durban around 1894, or so. So far I haven't been able to unearth anything more than the name of the company, so I'd be grateful if anyone could enlighten me.

Canada / George Frederick Beart of Edmonton, Alberta
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
I'd be grateful if anyone could help me to find out a little bit more about this individual. He was born in England in 1872, and spent some time in South Africa, but by 1919, was settled in Edmonton. He was a salesman in men's wear by this time and had married a lady called Edith Emily (nee Lancett) in Leeds in 1905. He died in Edmonton in 1929, and his wife died in Vancouver, B.C., in 1957, but that is virtually all I know about their life in Canada. I'd particularly like to know whether they had any children, but any other details, including those about where they lived and the business/es George worked for, would be lovely.
