London and Middlesex / Francis family - Clapton
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 08:54 GMT (UK)  »
I posted a while ago because I am trying to find out about my great-grandmother Maud Alice Francis.

Now I have her marriage certificate which sheds a little bit of light on her for me, however I still cannot find her or her husband in any census (possibly due to name changes)

The marriage took place of the 1st of January 1921 in registry office in Hackney.

Maud Alice Francis - 23 years old, spinster, living in Clapton (address possibly 10 Whitehall Mansions??? that's what the writing looks like to me), father Francis Joseph Francis - Hairdresser.
married
Herbert Henry Anderson - 34 years old widower, milling machinisit or merhcant, living 80 Norman Rd, Leytonstone, father William Anderson deceased - Hatmaker.

It's said that the Francis family were originally from Europe and their real last name was Bosec or something similar. Herbert Anderson may have also changed his name - possibly from Heron.

I know it might seem impossible but if anyone was able to find these people in any census then I would be very grateful for that.
I have ancestry and so far I cannot find Maud Alice in the 1901 census at all, which I find very unusual.

Any help is appreciated :)

I have a few ancestors from Westminster but ancestry doesn't seem to have many of the Westminster records ... I can't come over to the UK to look them up and I can't afford to ask the archives to look them up for me.

I was wondering if anyone happens to have access to or visit the Westminster archives -

I would like to put in a look-up request for the marriage of:

John Dent & Elizabeth Smith married 11 Oct. 1807, St Martin in the Fields, (the marriage is from Pallots)

& a the baptism of:

Maria Mapley - baptised July 27 1806 at St Clement Danes to parents John & Sarah Mapley (from IGI)

I would love to find a burial date of Sarah Mapley - her last child was born 1808 and her husband remarried 1821. The family stayed living in the St Clement Danes area in the 1841 census and seems like all children were baptised there. I think this the most likely place for burial too.

I know it is alot to ask so any help is very appreciated. Rebecca :)

London and Middlesex / Does this make sense?
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 05:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the Dent family from Westminster -

This is what I have so far - but I feel like the research I have done so far could be wrong or that I have missed something out, so tell me what you think.

It starts off with John Robert Dent born 1787 in Richmond Surrey, to parents John Dent & Martha Cooper

John Robert Dent marries an Elizabeth - there are two possibilities ~

1807 - St Martin in the Fields - John Dent to Elizabeth Smith (Pallots) or

1805 - St Leonard Shoreditch, Hackney - John Dent to Elizabeth Lowe

I believe at this stage the first one is more likely due to the fact John Robert & Elizabeth have 5 children together all born at St Martin in the Fields.

Edited to add: John Dent was a Bricklayer, he is living in St Anne Soho 1841 census and died before 1851 census. John & Elizebeths children are: William Robert 1810, Sarah 1812, Charlotte 1815, John Robert1819, James Robert 1822. All baptised St Martin in the Fields.
While on the birth records it states the father as being John Robert Dent, I have yet to find a marriage record under this name - as the ones I have found thus far are all John Dent.

I have Elizabeth Dent's death cert which states that she died 1878 - aged 97 years old making her born 1780 - 7 years older than John Robert Dent (and it definately states that she is his widow) - I know it is possible but this kind of older woman relationship does not seem to be so common back in the 1800's. It suprised me anyway - if they married 1807 - she would haeve been 27 and he 20.

Throughout the census', Elizabeth has stated her place of birth as being either Clapham or Cobham, Surrey. If I have done my reasearch correctly I have her baptism record as being 1780 -Holy Trinity, Clapham, Surrey. To parents Ann and Thomas Smith.

Ok, so does this research make sense? I don't want to find out I was wrong and missed certain details. If anyone else is researching these people, let me know :)

Surrey Lookup Requests / marriage look-up- please late 1780's Richmond, Surrey
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 03:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage between John Dent and Martha Cooper married sometime around 1786. They had 5 children all baptised at the St Mary Magdalene in Richmond Surrey and John Dent was buried there in 1830.

I know that these two people were married by the burial records -because Martha is Martha Ann Cooper-Dent she was buried Richmond upon Thames and also by children's birth records on IGI.

I have never been able to find a wedding record for these two though, even with all the new records on ancestry  (there is a member submission on IGI which has never been conclusive enough for me).

I think that John Dent was possibly born 1754 - baptised St Horselydown, Surrey.

London and Middlesex / Alice Louisa YATES (nee Rumbol)
« on: Sunday 25 April 10 01:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find information on my great, great grandmother Alice Louisa Rumbol - she married three times.

1stly to William Shaw in 1881
2ndly to James Yates in 1885
3rdly Edwin Thorne in late 1890's.

Poor woman - she was a widow twice in a lifetime.

Anyway - as far as I can tell she only had 2 children - Alice Emma Yates born 13th July 1890 in Southwark, and William Charles Shaw born 5th November 1881 in Lambeth.

William Charles was my great-grandfather who moved to New Zealand in the 1920's. I have been talking to my grandparents and apparently he talked about having a brother in England - so far I can find no record of Alice Louisa having any other children. But, I guessed that if she did have other children James Yates would have been the father.

In 1891 census Alice Louisa is living in Camberwell with her children and James Yates is not with her. There are only two children present at that time, by 1901 - Alice Louisa has remarried and is living in Monmouthshire. It's possible that she did have another child between 1891 and 1901 but the child is not present in the 1901 census - it could have been at a school or staying with another family member.

Extra information -
Alice Louisa Shaw married James Yates on 2nd November 1885 in Chelsea at the same church she married in the first time - St Judes. Alice Louisa Rumbol was born 13th April 1862 in Paddington and James Yates was born circa 1859 according to marriage record - it looks like his profession is Guardsman but I can't quite read the handriting. .

If anyone knows about or is able to find any information on any other children for Alice Louisa I would greatly appreciate it, because I am trying to figure out what happened to Willaim's family after he moved to New Zealand.

Monmouthshire / YATES, Alice Emma b. 1890
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am searching for any information on my great-grandfather's half sister. Her name was Alice Emma YATES and she was originally born in Southwark, Surrey on the 13th July 1890.

In the 1901 census she is living in Abercarn, Monmouthshire.

Her parents are Alice Louisa and James YATES - but James has died before 1901 and Alice Louisa has remarried Edwin THORNE.

In 1911 her half-brother William Charles SHAW married in Bedwelty and she is a witness at the wedding so she is still around Monmouthshire in 1911 and has not married.

If anyone knows of what happened to Alice Emma after the early 1900's please let me know as I would really to know. I would also like to find out what happened to Alice Louisa - she married three times, her last married was to Edwin Thorne.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Maud FRANCIS b. 1899 Hackney
« on: Sunday 15 November 09 07:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am  really stuck trying to trace my great grandmother Maud Alice Francis born around 1899 in Hackney.

Her father was an immigrant from  the czech republic. My grandfather told me that he changed his last name from Busec or Bosec to Francis. His first name was Charles.

I cannot find any record of Charles or Maud in 1901 census - or any trace of Charles Francis in any census.

This is the only information I have about Maud other than that she married Herbert Henry Anderson in 1921 in Hackney.

Any advice or information would be really appreciated.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Birth Lookup Please
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 03:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If anyone has access to Staffordshire births circa 1807, and would able to do a birth lookup for me - I would really appreciate it.

I am looking for a birth record for George Thomas born abt. 1807 in Auly Green. I believe that Auly Green is meant to be Adderly Green, Abbey Green or Audley - but it states that he was born Auly Green, Staffordshire on 1851 census.

George married Maria Mapley 1830 at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster and stayed living in Middlesex until he died sometime after 1851. His occupation was a Printer.

I have searched IGI and there is a birth record for George Thomas born 1804 in Abbot's Bromley, but I can't be sure if this is him or not.

Armed Forces / Scots Guard Army Records
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace my great, great grandfather William Shaw who was in the Scot's Guard, 2nd Battalion in Chelsea Barracks in 1881 census.

I have very little information about him - only his marriage cert and 1881 census as he died December 1882. I know he was born abt 1857/1858 in Lanarkshire, his father was William Shaw (labourer, deceased) and his occupation before being a soldier is a rock splitter.

I think most possible birth record might be - William Shaw b. 17 Oct 1858 in Anderston, Glasgow. To parents William Shaw and Agnes Miller.

Due to William Shaw being such a common name I need some more information about him. Like a more precise location of where he was born rather than simply Lanarkshire.

I was wondering if there would be any existing army records that would give me more information about him? And where I would be able to find them... I would be interested in finding out more about his time in the Army anyway.

Rebecca
