Family History Beginners Board / How accurate is the GRO?

How accurate is the early GRO, 1837-1845? I have found John Comery born 1844 , Mansfield, on the 1901,1891, 1881(spelled Comeny), and 1871 but I cannot find him on the GRO for his birth.
His father John Comery born 1815, Mansfield, is on the 1841 census in his fathers house hold and by the 1861 census has left his fathers household but I can't find the marriage on the GRO. I expected it to be 1841-1844 and searched 1837-1847 but I couldn't find it.
In both cases I looked up variations of the spelling. Am I going mad, is the GRO not accurate or is there something obvious I have missed?
