Staffordshire / Brother and Sister marry Sister and Brother?
« on: Sunday 23 July 06 21:27 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access to parish registers for marriages registered in Penkridge, perhaps you can help me sort this one out?

I have a relative, Joseph Sherwod, born c1832 in Tipton, son of Samuel Sherwood and Nancy ?. Joseph has a sister Eliza, born c 1848.

Joseph is on the 1861 census, RG9 Piece 2126 Folio 26 Page 46, with his wife Ann and daughter Eliza J Sherwood, born c 1859.

I looked for a marriage for Joseph and Ann around 1857+/- two years and came up with the following four names GRO reference 1861 Jan-Feb-Mar 6B 455

Anne Emery
Thomas Emery
Eliza Sherwood
Joseph Sherwood

This, to my mind, is a bit of a co-incidence. However, to prove the fact that a brother and sister married a sister and brother, and that I've got the right brothers and sisters,  I need the marriage details. So, if anyone can help, I'd be extremely grateful.

Essex / Lost in the 1871 census
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 22:39 BST (UK)  »
Are there any mising bits of the 1871 census for Essex? I've got 1861 and 1881 entries for one of my relatives, John Potter and his family, who lived in Ardleigh, but they semed to have disappeared of the face of the planet as far as the 1871 census is concerned. I know they went to South Africa 1888-1901? Could they have tried a new life out there before, or are they hiding somewhere else?

1861: RG9 Piece 1096 Folio 14 Page 1
1871: ???
1881: RG11 Piece 1785 Folio 6 Page 6

If anyone stumbles across them, please let me know.

The Common Room / Which wedding?
« on: Monday 10 July 06 14:21 BST (UK)  »
I got a copy recently of my Gt Gt Grandfather's marriage certificate for his second marriage. Amongst other things, I'm trying to find out who his real parents are. The certificate said he was a widower when he married. I have his birthdate as 1856 +/- 1 year, and his second marriage is Dec 1880. I've checked the marriage index on Ancestry for every year from 1870 to 1880, but can't find an obvious marriage (there's only 142 possibles!!) which would have been in Ripon, since he seemed to have lived most of his life there.

Other than shelling out £7 a time for a marriage certificate on the chance it's the right one, is there any other way of finding out who he might have married? The other information I have is his occupation (currier), and possibly who his father is from his 1880 marriage certificate, although I suspect this might not  actually be true! I have census entries for him from 1871 to 1901: sadly he does not appear on the 1861 census (he would have been about 5 years old). I think there are some Ripon entries missing for that year?

His name is George Anderson. His census entries are:

1871 RG10 Piece 4003 Folio 68 Page 36 - Living with his uncle in Hulme
1881 RG11 Piece 4317 Folio 118 Page 6 - married in Ripon
1891 RG12 Piece 3510 Folio 105 Page 17 and
         RG12 Piece 3510 Folio 105 Page 18
1901 RG13 Piece 4040 Folio 61 Page 7

I think I've found his birth index entry - it doesn't show up on FreeBMD, but I've scanned the index entries and found one for Ripon in the right year. I've now got this on order, but it's the first marriage bit that's now intiguing me.

Any ideas on how to track own the right marriage will be gratefully received.

Census and Resource Discussion / Double 1861 census entry?

I was trying to track down the parents of Jane Ideson, born 1803 in or around Knaresborough and married to Joseph Scatchard when I came across these two 1861 census returns:

1861 Census

Yorkshire, Bishop Monkton, District 12f

Schedule 58, Crown Inn, Bishop Monkton

Joseph Scatchard   Head   Mar   61   Carpenter and Inn Keeper   Yorkshire, Bishop Monkton

and

1861 Census

William Martin   Serv   Un   17   House Servt.   Yorkshire, Thirsk
William Smith   Serv   Un   17   House Servt.   Yorkshire, Tollerton

Joshua Ideson is William Ideson's dad, I think.

Is it known, possible, common, for the same people to be included on two different returns, in this case William and Ann Ideson? The ages and both places are too close to be a coincidence, surely?

I'm trying to find the parents of my gt gt grandfather, Andrew Foster, and their siblings, and any marriage details for Andrew's parents, aunts and uncles.

On both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, Andrew's place of birth was given as Northallerton. He was born c1823, and married Mary Milnes in Leeds on 11 July 1846. The marriage certificate incorrectly states his wife's surname as Mills. Mary's sister Hannah is a witness, and Andrew's father's name is given as Andrew Foster, Coachman. I can't find Andrew snr on any census. On the 1841 census, Andrew jnr was apprenticed in 1841 to John Bost in Northallerton as a ropemaker.

On the 1851 census, I have Andrew living with his wife Mary in Chadwick Street, Hunslet, Leeds, his cousin Thomas Scatchard, and his sister-in-law, Sarah. I have checked the 1841 and 1851 census records and found the Milnes family and the details are all consistent with the marriage certificate except for the mis-spelled name. Thomas Scatchard later married Sarah in Q2 1862, making Thomas Scatchard Andrew jnr's brother-in-law as well as his cousin.

I am trying to find out exactly how Andrew jnr and Thomas Scatchard are related. If I have the facts right, then either Andrew Foster snr's wife was a Scatchard and sister to Thomas' father, or Thomas Scatchard's mother was a Foster, sister to Andrew jnr's father.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Tanners and curriers in Ripon
« on: Thursday 18 May 06 13:00 BST (UK)  »
Can any one help please?

I am looking for information on leather working in Ripon. My great grandfather George Anderson lived in Ripon in Tomlinsons Yard and later Blossomgate, and was a currier. As far as I can make out, a currier is the person who finished leather once it has been tanned. So, I assume that there must be a tannery and leatherworks somewhere in Ripon. I'd be grateful if anyone has any information that they can pass on.

I've also posted this on the North Ridings board.

Lanarkshire / Scottish BMD records
« on: Monday 15 May 06 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Tis one's tricky  :-X

I'm looking for details of my adopted mother. She was Jewish, and I think she was born in Glasgow c1912. I think her name was Sarah Gordon. She later adopted the first names Sylvia Betty. I think her father was a tailor, but can't be certain. If anyone can help identifying the best place to start looking for birth records I'd appreciate the information.

Sylvia maried three times. I don't know where to look for her first marriage. I assume it was after 1930, so I couldn't find any hits on the Scottish databases. Can I get online access to marriage indexes  for marriages after 1930? I think her first husband's surname was Lifshack, an unusual name and precious few hits on Ancestry.com. I think they had one son whose name might have been Peter. I have some photos of a young boy with me and Sylvia when I was about 9 months old. However, just to screw things up completely, I might have her maiden name and first husband's name the wrong way round  :'(

I have details of her second and third marriages - she married out of the Jewish faith. I also know she had a sister called Fay, and that she claimed to have Sir Sebag Shaw QC as a cousin. I think that claim is substantially true as she went to visit him in London and had kept several newspaper cuttings relating to his court cases.

I apologise for the vaguenmess of the information, but I'd really appreciate any help on how or where to start searching Scottish records.
