Travelling People / henry loveridge and sarah smith
« on: Friday 14 March 14 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
hello all I wander if someone might be able to help me. I have recently discovered the names of my great granddad steven parker who died in 1935 and was buried as William ellis. all our family understood his surname to be parker, but I have learnt from the granddaughter of his sister that he is infact a loveridge. so my great gran lovey was known as a loveridge when she should have really been a parker and her man steve was a parker who should have been a loveridge. lol it is enough to make you scream eh.
anyway steves parents were henry loveridge and sarah smith, I have been unable to pin them down anywhere in census or birth records. other children they had where
florabella bn 1871-1946 she partnered Solomon parker or loveridge who was the child of peg leg parker and luke , and brother to eliza ,lovey's mum.
henry or hanny.
lizzie and nan. they may have had more but that is all ive been told im intouch with florabella and solomons granddaughter and that is all they know about henry and sarah. the area travelled was probably beds, herts, Essex that part of the country.
any help trying to pin them down would be greatly received.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / reading an old will
« on: Monday 24 February 14 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
hi not sure if this is the right place for this so sorry if it isint. looking on ancestry yesterday during the free access I managed to find a will for a pottinger ancestor but I struggled to read the writing. I did make out a few things thankfully important stuff like his wife and sons name so I could be sure it was his. so my question is if I could manage to get a copy of it is there anyone out there who can um translate it. it is in English but the will was done in 1771 so im sure you get the problem. I find the same problem with some census entries is it me or is the writing bad or would they have considered it beautiful. some are worse than others.

Bedfordshire / beds parish cds , bit confused
« on: Sunday 13 October 13 16:41 BST (UK)  »
hello wander if someone could help me, ive hit a brick wall over the birth reg of one of my ancestors , I can not find his reg in bmd he may have not been registered at all or he may have been under a different name. his name should be Alfred loveridge and he was born around 1850 on the census records he says born in Bedford, so im hoping to try for baptisims to see if that would give me a clue but I cant seem to find one cd for beds parish records, ive never bought one of these cds before so im not sure what to get.  so has anyone got any suggestions please for how/where I might get a cd for baptisims for Bedfordshire. also is there lists for baptisims in beds around 1930.
sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Travelling People / william ellice parker, help please
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 18:24 BST (UK)  »
hi all. well i wander if i could challenge you all to a possibly impossible task. my 4 x great grandparents are william ellice parker and emma.  i dont know much about them and i am desperate to. i discovered there names via my 3 x granny comfort there daughter. she was born in stoke goldington bucks on 15th feb 1848, her mum only is down on her birth cert as emma parker. on her baptisim record however both parents are listed as above. comfort didnt marry my 3 x great grandad alfred loveridge, but on comforts death certificate they list under her occupation as comfort parker a spinster of no occupation, daughter of william ellice parker a hawker, desceased.
that is it, the only evidence i have of william and emma. i can not find them on any census records or even as parents of other children. i think that comfort's brother is nelson parker who she is encamped with in 1871 on the census with alfred lover(idge) and there first 2 sons, nelson is with his family. now if nelson is her brother then there
is a big age difference he was bn in the 1830's she 1848 so maybe she was a last child, comfort and her daughter in law and her granddaughter where all having kids well into there 40's so maybe emma had her later in life. anyway if anyone can find anything more on william and emma maybe more children i would be very grateful, im just not succeding.
thanks so much tracey

Travelling People / Ash tree lane, beacon road, gillingham kent gypsy encampment
« on: Saturday 22 June 13 12:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. im researching the encampment that was for many years on the hill over looking luton in kent. it was known as sugar loaf hill and ran along ash tree lane and also down into beacon road. i know of several traveller families who encamped there over the years they were Arnolds, Beaneys, Eastwoods, kemps,Brazils, Smiths and others. I would love to hear from any one who knows of the camp and who had family who lived there. I have been and will be going again to the medway archive and found various articles relating to the camp. My intention is to write an article on the camp and the folks who lived there for the romany and traveller fam history society but i also feel that it would be good to collect together all the family stories and history of the camp for the future before they are gone forever. the camp was there for many years possibly from about 1880 to atleast the 1960's before it was cleared. I realise there will be folk who are still with us who may wish to contribute but keep there details private and that is fine.
I do not personally have any family envolvment with the camp, my own loveridge/parker family travelled up around beds, herts, suffolk and essex but as i live in chatham i have always been intrested in the camp, local history has always fascinated me and combine that with traveller history well what could be more perfect.
There was also apparently a fair held in the area over the years with boxing booths and the like so i would love stories of this too.
so if you would like to help me and contribute i would love to hear from you, please pm me and we will go from there.
