England / William Oxley and family
« on: Friday 15 September 06 01:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am searching for William Oxley, Naval Engineer, born about 1840, who married Helen McCormick, born about 1845 in Glasgow Scotland in 1871.  Prior to the marriage they had baby Annie in 1869, and then another daughter Mary Jane in 1872, both in Glasgow.  But I cannot find a trace of them in the Scottish censuses, even the 1871 when you think they would have been there, given the birth year of Mary Jane.  Since I know Helen was born in England, I was thinking they may have gone to live there.

Can someone please doe a search for me?  I would appreciate it very much.

Hi all,

This is my Gran.  It is in reasonable condition, but needs a bit of a clean-up.

I think it was taken in the thirties, but I am trying to determine as close a year  as I can.  Does anyone else think there is a little bulge in the coat??? Can you  see why I am trying to establish a date?  ;D

Gran was born in 1919 and has since passed on so I can't ask her about the photo.  I would appreciate any help.

Lanarkshire / William Bowie, father of Robert, Glasgow
« on: Monday 29 May 06 01:54 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the parents of Robert Walker Bowie born about 1847 in Glasgow, Scotland. Parents are William Bowie and Jessie Armour. I can find no birth for Robert, nor marriage or deaths for his parents.

Robert married Margaret Allison in 1868, and I have them well documented from that point. It is before the marriage that I am having trouble with.

Antrim / Mooney/McCallion, Rasharkin
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 04:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Hugh Mooney married Agnes McCallion on 12 November 1858 in Rasharkin, Co. Antrim.  Hugh's parents were Denis Mooney and Eliza McGinnis.  Agnes' parents were Philip McCallion and Catherine McEwan or McKeon.

By 1859 Hugh and Agnes had moved to Glasgow Scotland where their first child Catherine was born.  And then on some certificates, Agnes' surname is changed to Campbell, which I have read was not uncommon for McCallion folk.

I would like to try to trace these families further back in Ireland and hopefully find some siblings of Hugh and Agnes.

All help appreciated!

Antrim / Madden from Ahoghill
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 04:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a John Madden (b. about 1831) who married Mary McIlvenny or McIlvenna (b. about 1831)  on 24 December 1850 in Ahoghill, Co. Antrim Ireland.

John's parents were Henry Madden and Mary Green (whose parents were John Green and Mary McEwan).

Mary's parents were Patrick McIlvenny and Mary Law.

John Madden and Mary McIlvenny had one daughter, Mary, in Co. Antrim before immigratng to Glasgow Scotland by 1856 when another child was born.  In all they had 9 children.  I believe the family were Roman Catholic.

I would like to find out more about the Irish history of this family, trace their lines further back and perhaps find some siblings.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who thinks they may be able to help.

Thanks for reading,

Nina

Fermanagh / Gordon of Enniskillen
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 03:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have Patrick Gordon born about 1824 who married Margaret Brady about 1864 in Enniskillen.  They had moved to Glasgow Scotland by 1886.

Margaret's parents were John Brady and Margaret McNaught, but as I can't find a death registration for Patrick, I cannot trace who his parents may have been.

I would like to trace the Irish heritage of the Gordon family, and would like to also find out where and when Patrick died, as it appears it wasn't in Scotland.  He was a tailor by trade, and was alive in 1891 according to the Scottish census, but had died by 1893 when his daughter Helen married.

Wicklow / McTaigh/McTighe/McTague/Taigh/Tagg
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 03:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a Catherine McTaigh (many varied spellings) who gives her birthplace as Co. Wicklow, Ireland in a poorhouse application she made in Glasgow.  She was born about 1837, parents are James McTaigh (a hawker and/or a trunk maker) and Catherine McDermid according to her marriage registration to James McCormick, which took place in Liverpool in 1857.  It was Church of England demonination.

Catherine and James had moved to Glasgow by 1860, where she endured much, as James was in and out of trouble with the law.

I would love to find out more about her Irish roots, and would appreciate any help.

Donegal / Jane Lawrie/Laurie/Lowrie b. 1792 Donegal
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 03:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am searching for information about Jane Lawrie/Laurie/Lowrie and probably other spellings who was born in Co. Donegal.

Parents were Andrew Laurie (etc) and Janet Maxwell.

Jane married Samuel Watson and were settled in Glasgow Scotland by the time their daughter Margaret was born in about 1823.  Other children born in Glasgow were Mathew, Janet and William all between 1823 and 1832 approximately, which is when Samuel is said to have died.

Jane died in Glasgow in 1869.

I would like to know more about her Irish roots, particularly an actual township or parish, and perhaps if she had any siblings.  Of course it would also be good to trace her line further back.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for reading,

Nina

Leitrim / Glancy and O'Brien, Leitrim to Glasgow
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 02:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have the following Glancy ancestors:

Thomas Glancy, b. about 1796, Ireland, married Bridget Glancy b. about 1800 (several sources maintain this was her maiden name),  Both had died before 1857, place unknown.

Children were:

Mary Glancy, b. about 1821, Ireland.  Married Thomas O'Brien (parents James and Mary McGowan) in Jan 1840, in Barr of Farrow, Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.  The O'Briens came from Ireland to Scotland sometime between 1844, when son James was born in Ireland, and 1850, when son Thomas was born in Lanark.  I have most information available for the O'Briens from this point.  It appears that Mary's sisters were living with her in the 1851 census.

Rose Ann Glancy, b. about 1831 Ireland, and married Arthur Lavery in Glasgow in 1857.

Catherine Glancy, b. about 1835, Ireland.

Patrick Glancy, b. about 1837, Ireland. (He is a witness to sister Rose Ann's marriage in 1857)

If you see any connections, I would like to hear from you.

Nina
