Technical Help / Desktop gadgets
« on: Saturday 24 May 14 10:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I've just noticed that my desktop gadgets (clock and weather) have disappeared, not only from the desktop, but from the computer, and I can't find how to reinstall them? When I click on gadgets either from the desktop or the display control panel, and any of the options in the window, nothing happens. The on-line help is no use as it assumes that the gadgets are already installed on the computer. I have Windows 7 Starter. I'm not that bothered about them, but would like to know why they're not there any more? Have they been uninstalled without my knowing about it, and why?
Cheers

Somerset Lookup Requests / Combe St Nicholas Parish records COAT/COATE and NORTH
« on: Thursday 22 May 14 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am looking for BMDs for some of my family members from Combe St Nicholas, I have approximate birth years from Census returns, but very little else. The information I am looking for is as follows:

John COAT(E) born Combe c.1801, married someone called Eve c.1835, who was born in Curland c.1813, so they may possibly have got married there, rather than at Combe? John died in 1864 and Eve in 1867. I am looking for John's baptism, John and Eve's marriage, which would give me Eve's maiden name, and also burial records for them.

John and Eve had five children that I know of - Elizabeth (b. c.1836), Henry (b. c.1838), Jane (b. c.1842), Susan (b. c.1847) and Amelia Eve (b. c.1850), they may have had more who died in infancy?
I am looking in particular for Jane's baptism, and her marriage to Edmund (also could be Edward or Edwin, I have all these variants from various transcriptions) NORTH c.1860. Also baptism of a Louisa NORTH c.1861 (daughter of Edmund and Jane), and burial of Jane NORTH c.1863, and burial of Edmund NORTH between 1861 and 1871.
Thank you very much for reading this, and for any help that you may be able to offer.

Somerset / Combe St Nicholas Parish records
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Does anyone know whether the Combe St Nicholas Parish records have been transcribed? The reason I'm asking is that I have recently received some new information about my family, but there are a few dates missing, and some of the information is just from Census returns, so I would really like confirmation on the BMDs. The period I'm interested in is from 1800 to 1865.
Thanks

Dorset / Henry Row(e) b. Axminster c.1831
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'm looking for a baptism for a Henry Rowe, b. Axminster c.1831. His parents were John and Sarah Rowe, and he had six siblings, all of whom were baptised at Chardstock. There is more information on this family on this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=649853.msg4964413#msg4964413
I have only just found out that John and Sarah had another child, Henry, because I have been contacted by one of his descendents, but neither of us has been able to find his baptism. I have also been unable to find anything else about John Rowe, and so can't trace this particular family any further back, although my instinct tells me that they are in some way associated with other older Row(e)s in Chardstock.
Thanks

The Common Room / Why is William Harwood buried in the family grave?
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I have something of a mystery here! I have the receipt for a grave in Southern Cemetery, Manchester, bought by my husband's grandfather Ernest Thomas Jewell in 1923 for the purpose of burying his daughter Alice May, who died aged 3 months. The receipt has written on the back the names of others buried there, (Ernest and his wife Mary, plus the cremated remains of my husband's father and auntie, who were Ernest and Mary's children), but the list also includes the name William Harwood, buried in 1933, aged 83, and I have another receipt of that date, signed by Ernest, which I assume refers to the grave opening for William's burial.
The thing is - who was William Harwood and why is he in the family grave??
I have a 1911 Census return which shows Ernest, his parents Stephen and Bessie and his brothers and sisters in St Teath, Cornwall, together with a William Harwood who is a boarder, and a Naval Pensioner. I have found various other bits of information about William, none of it conclusive.
Has anyone got any ideas, hints or tips as to how I can find out the relationship between William Harwood and the Jewell family? Surely there must be some connection for him to be buried in the family grave?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Louisa North b.1881 travelling to Bombay??
« on: Monday 03 February 14 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'm trying to find out what happened to my ancestor Louisa North, born 1881 in Warrington, Lancashire. I started off with the thread below:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=673028.msg5180943#msg5180943

RootsChatters found two possible records on passenger lists, one going to Australia, which I followed up here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=673093.msg5181670#msg5181670

I am now trying to follow up the other passenger list possibility, on the Scindia, sailing from Liverpool to Bombay on the 17th March 1810. I attach the relevant part of the document here.

I would appreciate some help in deciphering the other passenger names, as this might help me find out if this Louisa North is my missing relative. Also, it looks as though she may be accompanying these other people as a children's nurse or nanny, what do you think? Would they be emigrating, or just visiting? Could one of the passengers have been an Indian companion/servant?
Any help in confirming or eliminating this Louisa will be very gratefully received.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Burial Records
« on: Monday 20 January 14 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
I was just wondering as to the best way to find burial records from the late 19th - early 20th century?   Many parish registers have not been transcribed yet for this period, and I'm not certain how to find out which ones to go and look at? Do I just 'guess', based on where they died?
Thanks

The Common Room / Moving to a new area in the 1880's
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 14:29 GMT (UK)  »
I was just wondering how my family travelled from the Chard area in Somerset, to Warrington, Lancashire, in 1878? They had a son, aged 3, and a new-born baby. I think they were quite poor. Would they have taken any possessions with them? On the 1881 Census they had a house in Warrington and he was an engine driver, which I suppose was a reasonable kind of job?

Dorset / Wambrook Parish records
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Does anyone know if the Parish records for Wambrook have been transcribed and/or are available on line? The reason I ask is that my great grandparents were married there, at St Mary's Church, and I wondered if any other family were associated with the Parish? My great grandmother came from Chardstock, so I have quite a lot of information from Chardstock Web Museum, but there are still a few gaps.
Thanks
