I'm looking for John Beales (born 1846 Wymondham, Norfolk, England) in the 1881 - 1911 censuses but can't find him. In 1871 he's aboard a ship and 1881 his wife (Ellen) is listed a fisherman's wife.
From 1891 they've both completely disappeared - can't even find a death record for Ellen Beales - and their children are living with the grandparents.

John Beales born 1846 in Wymondham, Norfolk.
Wife:   Ellen Beales
Wedding date:   15 Aug 1867
Location:   St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
1867 - Living in Row 76, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

1871 census - Aboard the "Rivulet" under Master Frederick Beales.

1873 - Living in Row 93, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

I can't find him in any censuses later than 1871! I assume he's at sea because I find the rest of his family at home.

Armed Forces / Where do I go for pre-WWI records?

I'd love to learn more about the military service of ancestors in wars such as the Balkans and the Napoleonic Wars. I have no idea how to go about this though.

World War Two / Who is the authority on the Wiltshire Regiment?
« on: Monday 11 July 16 23:16 BST (UK)  »
My Uncle was in the Wiltshire Regt in WWII. I have a photo of his group from before deployment but I botched up the photo and am looking for a larger, better quality version of it. I can't remember where I first found it.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the people to ask about this?
Photo in question is attached...

An ancestor served on many vessels.
Can anyone offer insight into what the service would have been like for him?
Also, can anyone tell me what the "List and No." column means?
What is the "Rating" column and what to the abbreviations mean?
What are the "Badges" he earned?

Wales / Some help finding the origins of Jane Rees please?!
« on: Monday 04 April 16 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Jane Rees married in 1891 but her life before this is a mystery to me.
Here's what I have till now:

She was born in 1863 in Tal Y Bont
Her Father was David Rees (either a Mariner or Miner, can't read the cert) he had died by Nov 1891.
She married Thomas Williams in Bangor in Nov 1891
Their marriage cert gave her address as Aberystwyth in 1891.

Where do I go next? I'd like to get her in an earlier census but Jane Rees daur of David Rees is very common in these parts and I don't know whether she was in Talybont or Aberystwyth or whether David was sailing away etc? It's tricky.
I was thinking about a birth cert but again, common names?

The Common Room / Some of my favourite resources.

Some sites I use more than others. I love using sites which have Parish Records databased but they're often hard to come by.

This is a good one for Cheshire

This is a good one for Lancashire

Do any of you have your own favourite sites to share? I'd like to expand my collection.

The Common Room / Really weird mystery, where was he born?
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 13:37 GMT (UK)  »
George Jones b.c.1860
married Esther Evans in 1883 in Llandeilo Graban, Radnorshire

Here's where it get's odd.
In 1891, the family are together in Llansantffraed and George's birthplace is Llanfrych, Breconshire.
In 1901, the family are together in Llansantffraed and George's birthplace is Moccas, Herefordshire.
In 1911, the family are together in Bedwellty and George's birthplace is Llanfrych, Breconshire.

Because of the common name and uncertain place of birth, I struggle to find George before his marriage. I am sure the 1901 George is the same man because the whole family is consistent with names, dates, jobs etc.

How do I find out the real place of birth?
