US Completed Requests / Mary Ryan Died Michigan 1997
« on: Tuesday 12 March 13 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if anyone with expertise in USA searches can give me some advice?

I found a social security death record on Ancestry for a Mary F Ryan born 17 April 1919, died 15 August 1997 in Oakland, Michigan.
This matches the birth of my Mary Ryan (the middle initial is wrong but I've come across many such mistakes in the past so don't want to discount it right away) but I want to establish whether it is correct.

What is the best way of getting more information on this death record?

This is my first search for American records so some pointers would be really helpful.

Thanks
Sarah

Lanarkshire / Mary Josephine Ryan
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching a woman called Mary Josephine Ryan.
Born Castlebar, Mayo in 1919. I have her in Glasgow up till 1943 but then she disappears. I'd like to establish whether she married after this date but due to the common name and the possible date of marriage I can't narrow down any further than eight possible Mary Ryan marriages on Scotlands People. Her parents names were Michael Ryan and Bridget Kirby so if I could look at the certificates online I could check these.
Does anyone have any other thoughts as to how I could check this information because I'm a bit stuck and it will cost a lot to pursue this hunch if I need to order every possible certificate from SP!
Cheers

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Margaret Percy
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 12:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi

If anyone is able to look up a birth for me in Newcastle as I'm wanting to check parents names it would be much appreciated.

The GRO Index has a Margaret Percy born Newcastle Mar 1978, Vol 10b, page 241.  If this woman is the right person I'm looking for her parents should be Andrew Percy and Agnes Pyles.

It may be impossible to find that information out without ordering a certificate?

Happy to reciprocate if anyone needs anything looked for in Glasgow.

Thanks

Northumberland / Margaret Percy 1878
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm new to searching births in England and wondered if anyone can help.  My Margaret Percy was born c1878 in England but brought up in Scotland.

I have 2 possible listings for her in England (1878 in Newcastle and 1878 in Tynemouth).

I've viewed the listings on Ancestry in my local library but was wondering how to go about looking at the certificates.  I just need to establish which one is the correct Margaret - she should have parents named Andrew Percy and Agnes Pyles.

Any advice much appreciated!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Caledon Mills 1930s Fife

Does anyone know where Caledon Mills was.  This photo shows my Grandma Joan Brown in the middle with two workmates.  The back of the photo says Caledon Mills.  I know she worked in the weaving industry in the 1930s in Kirkcaldy but can't find mention of these mills - I know she lived in Sinclairtown area and worked locally - any ideas where this mill was situated?

Fife / James Low Drowning Cardenden 1921
« on: Tuesday 14 August 12 10:47 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out some more information about an infant drowning in 1921.

The baby's name was James Matthew Robertson Low. His parents were Alexander Stewart Low and Joan Robertson.  He died from "drowning - asphyxia" at 16 Balgonie Terrace in Cardenden on October 25th 1921.

There are a couple of different family stories about this and not sure if they are true. One version says he drowned in a river and the other that he drowned in a wash-house.  The drowning was probably an accident but is it possible that it might have been mentioned in the newspapers of the time?

I can't find any mention but wondered if anyone else knew of this incident?

Lancashire / Mary Ryan born 17/4/1919
« on: Friday 09 March 12 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching Mary Josephine Ryan born Castlebar in Mayo 1919.  Her family appear to have settled in Liverpool although Mary had a daughter in Glasgow in 1942 and appears to have lived there for a couple of years afterwards.

Then she disappears from Scotland.  I can't find a marriage or a death for her there so I think she went back to Liverpool or Ireland.  A nephew who didn't know her recalls a story that she may have worked as a nurse at Garston Hospital in the 1950s.

I can't find a death for her in England so either she is still alive or got married and changed her name.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should look next?

Cheers

Antrim / McDonnell Family Ballymena
« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 13:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking for a birth for Robert McDonald or McDonnell.  Think he changed his name when he moved to Scotland aged about 16 so birth will probably be under the name McDonnell.

His parents were William McDonnell and Ann Francis.  Think he came from Bally? in Antrim.

Any help gratefully received.

Antrim / McAuley Family
« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 12:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm trying to trace the parents and area of Ireland for James McAuley born 1869.  Parents names are James McAuley and Ellen McQuillan.

James McAuley was born 1869 in Ireland, married 1901 to Elizabeth Dickerson in Glasgow and died in Glasgow in 1928.  He worked as a Dock Labourer and probably came to Scotland as a young man.

Any information gratefully received as we can find nothing in the Scotland records or on Ancestry.
