Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date (and location) of photograph
« on: Sunday 02 December 07 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I have been trying through the North Riding board to get people's opinions of the date and location of tis photograph.  I think it may have been taken in Middlesbrough or Redcar.  The topic is at

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,271564.0.html

Pels has suggested that I should also seek help from this board.  I received it as an email attachment and have no idea about the quality of the backing, etc.

Thank you

Hi

This photograph was sent to me as an email attachment by a distant relative.  Our family lived mostly in Middlesbrough and Redcar.  It would help me to know who the people are if I had

1. a rough estimation of the date of the picture

2. and knew the location

So please Rootschatters, if you can help,

All the best

Census and Resource Discussion / UK Telephone Directories on Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

There has been press publicity over the past few days to the effect that Ancestry have now got complete UK telephone directories on line and I have just spent a wee while checking my own and some relatives' entries.

The records are very useful if your relative had a telephone and you want to check an address.  Ancestry allow you to search for a name and initials but are a little over enthusiastic in finding matches.  A search for G Harland started with all the A.G. Harlands and went through the alphabet before producing simple G. Harlands on about item 260.

Of course there were several G. Harlands scattered about the UK.  The telephone directories seem to have been grouped differently from year to year.  My Harlands lived in North Yorkshire and County Durham so in the early records the summary lists them as in 'Lincoln, York, Northumberland', a particularly irritating grouping for proud residents of Co Durham!  At a later period the grouping seems to be 'York and Northumberland' and by 1970 has become 'Middlesborough'!  So if you are chasing John Smith, in Little Somewhere, you really need to try to find the districts that the Directory compilers assigned Little Somewhere to in the past and at the moment I do not know an easy way to do this on line.  In the bad old days of paper the Post Office published an index to each Directory set and you could look up a location and find its exchange and directory area but I do not think that Ancestry have coded these indices.

Finally, although the press publicity suggests on line coverage of the complete set of directories up to 1984 as far as I can see from 1973 the on line data only covers Greater London and bits of the home counties and certainly does not cover Middlesborough.

Good luck

The Common Room / Ancestry Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

On a number of occasions when I have been searching for a birth, marriage or death on Ancestry's Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983 over a continuous range of years i have noticed missing quarters.  Today I was searching for a Horwood birth in the period 1940+-1 and Ancestry produced a list of 10 quarters rather than the expected 12 (ie 1939-1941).

I had assumed in the past that the missing quarters were a consequence of missing original data or missing films in the Ancestry archive but this was not the case.  In the data that I was searching the Ancestry transcriber (machine?) has indexed each page using the name on the top left as the start name and the name on the bottom right as the end name.  Unfortunately on many pages the original GRO index has proved incomplete and missing names have been added at the bottom of the page.  The Ancestry transcriber picks up the last of these names, if there are any on the right, and uses that name as the end of the range.

If you search Ancestry Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983 for Horwood in births Jan-Mar 1940 you will be told that there are no records that meet your search criteria.  However if you search for Horton births in Jan-Mar 1940 you will be taken to an index range "Kenneth Horsfield to Jacqueline M Horvath" and if you look at the image you will find that the page covers "Kenneth Horsfield to Mary Hosking" and that Jacqueline Horvath was added as a correction.

So if you search one of the complete BMD indices and find missing quarters you should 1) try to identify a common name that is alphabetically close to the name you are researching, 2) search for the common name in the missing quarter, and 3) if necessary page through the images until you find your research name or are confident that it is really missing in that quarter.
