Warwickshire / Gutteridge of Austrey, c.1700
« on: Thursday 06 October 16 12:45 BST (UK)  »
William Gutteridge was born in Austrey c. 1700. He married Mary Taverner in 1720 and they had two children, William and Elizabeth, before moving to Coventry before 1732.

Parish records show the birth of a Thomas Gutteridge in Austrey about 1694 but neither the record of Thomas's or William's birth name their parents. Please can anyone find the parents to help me determine whether they were brothers?

World War Two / Col. Charles William Linford
« on: Wednesday 18 May 16 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone tell me anything about the wartime and subsequent service of Col, Charls William Linford (1921-1988)?

I have found a record of the award of a Military Cross to a Captain (109444) Charles William Linford of the Royal Warwicks while serving in Italy in 1945 with the 3rd Bn Royal Garwhal Rifles. Does anyone know whether they are one and the same person?

Devon / Old Paignton
« on: Thursday 28 May 15 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I left my childhood home, Paignton, almost fifty years ago and hadn't visited in at least thirty years until a few days ago, for a family occasion. Naturally I went mooching round my old haunts in the vicinity of Lower Polsham Road and the Palace Hotel. I was sad to see that the old family home, Seacroft, on the corner of Steartfield and Norman Roads had disappeared and that only the curtain wall and gates of what was once Oldenburg House on Lower Polsham Road remain. Census returns apppear to suggest that Oldenburg was built some time before 1871, at around the same time as Steartfield, now the Palace Hotel. They also appear to bring into question the accepted wisdom that Steartfield was built for Washington Singer.

Please can anyone tell me:
1, When was Seacroft demolished?
2. Anything at all about Oldenburg House.

If anyone has an image of either which they would be prepared to share I shall be eternally grateful.

Regards,

Keith

Australia / Spanish Australia
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 14:38 GMT (UK)  »
One British newspaper has today reported that Spain was planning to invade Australia in the 1790s according to documents recently discovered in Spanish naval archives.

Concerned that a large British presence in the southern oceans would threaten Spain's interests in South America and the Philippines, King Carlos IV approved a plan whereby Spain's deputy naval commander, Jose de Bustamante y Guerra, was despatched to Uruguay with orders to assemnle a fleet of 100 warships to attack Australia. The plan involved a summer attack in which Spanish ships would fire hot cannonballs designed to set fire to shipping and wooden buildings.

The Spanish seem to have developed the belief that convict transportation was merely a ruse whereby Britain was secretly shipping large numbers of troops to Australia in preparation for disruptive raids on Spanish colonies. Spain is said to have abandoned the plan because it realised that Britain had the larger fighting force.

Who knows, you might all have been speaking Spanish by now.

John Booth, born abt 1834, Dublin, came to Birmingham, England, where he married Mary Hughes, also born abt 1834. in 1853. On successive census returns Mary names her place of birth as Ganley, Ireland. Try as I might I can't find Ganley on any map of Ireland. Please can anyone help?

Any information relating to either Damiel or mary would also be greatly appreciated.
