Ireland / Familysearch Beta Web-Site
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
just to remind people that the familysearch pilot site that we use for Irish Civil BMD and extracted record searches is soon to be discontinued and replaced with the allegedly improved Beta site at : https://beta.familysearch.org/

There is an option to report feedback and problem with a tab to the right of the screen.

The only improvement that I see in this system is that you can now use either a registration district or county in the location field .. although this does not seem to work consistently (particularly for deaths).

The main problem that I see is that there are now no filters to limit the results to a particular event type, county or series of decades etc

Quite a few of the comments reported have been relating to the missing filters.

Ireland / NLI RC Records
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Just heard about some interesting news about the RC records in the National Library ..would be great if it goes ahead...

"The National Library has recently put out a request for tender for the digitisation of all of its Roman Catholic parish register microfilms. These microfilms cover 98% of the pre-1880 baptism, marriage and burial records kept by local parishes on the entire island..."

update : Street View is up and running (if in Ireland use http://maps.google.com/maps rather than the .ie address)

World War One / John William Wilson
« on: Thursday 01 July 10 19:33 BST (UK)  »
We've heard various stories about one or more or my gt-grandfather brothers serving in WW1 but only just found a connection with the service record for John William Wilson. Military records are new to me so I'm not certain what all this means...so any pointers or opinions would be appreciated.

A few extracts of the record I found..

[damaged]  Attestation ? Army Form B. 2512  (cant see a date?]
Labour Corps, West Yorkshire Reg. 25th(Wks) Batt Durham Light Inf.

Protection Certificate and Certificate of Identity
Reg. No. 168082  Sgt. Labour Corp Dispersal Unit 17 Jul 1919

[damaged] ....Disability - Army Form Z.22
..8082  Sgt. Labour Corp  dated 15 Jul 1919
'I do not claim to be suffering from a disability due to my military service'

see below en extract from one of the forms with what appear to be a list of promotions included on one of the forms. I dont see anything yet that looks like a list of postings..

what exactly is involved in the Labour Corps ?

thanks,

Dublin / Dublin 1920s Photo
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone can help though some light on a Dublin photo we have from my grandad. There are nine people, politicians (Cumann na nGaedhael), a priest, a bishop, and two army men.

Their names are written on the back but I cant read three of them clearly. I've included a section of the photo and a scan of the names.

Any ideas on the missing names, the approx date, and the reason why these people were all photographed together ?

My guess as to the timeframe is some time between the beginning of 1922 and August that year - based on Arthur Griffith being present (he died in August) and Paddy Hogan being in the photo as he was minister for Land and Agriculture from 1922.

thanks,

Shane

p.s the other names are Paddy Hogan, Ignatius O'Neill, Kevin O'Higgins, Arthur Griffith, Dr. Fogarty (Bishop of Killaloe) & Sean Mac Eoin

Update - people confirmed :  A = Cannon William [O']Kennedy, B = Sean Milroy T.D.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Woodman Inn - Castleford
« on: Friday 28 May 10 09:20 BST (UK)  »
does anybody recognize the pub in the photo below ?

The Woodman Inn was apparently located somewhere near Castleford, and was owned (and possibly built) by my gtgt-grandfather Henry Wilson.. sometime in the late 1880s to early 1890s.

He vanished in the mid 1890s and I'm hoping that locating the pub might help find further details on him.

thanks,

Shane

According to Digiguide RTE1 is going to start showing Who Do You Think You Are ? USA starting with the Sarah Jessica Parker episode on Thursday 20th May at 22:15. They seem to be showing them slightly out of sequence as the one listed for the following week is Susan Sarandon.
