I would be very grateful if anybody could help me understand the technicalities of a lease?
My interest is the Crossman family. There is a Crossman / Dawes marriage in 1739 and I have researched both families around 1740 but have so far not found a link between John Crossman (who married Grace in 1712) and Elizabeth Dawe nee Crossman (who was buried 1743 d of Joan).
How did a lease work in 1740? What does the term ‘release’ mean? What was a ‘fine’ and a ‘Deed to lead the uses of a fine’?
I am trying to squeeze any information from this – every little helps?
