Berkshire / Wiltshire Wills Project
« on: Thursday 11 January 07 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
You might wonder what a Wiltshire Wills Project has to do with Berkshire - the answer is a lot.

The Bishop of Salisbury held sway over most of Berkshire and his Consistory Court proved many Berkshire wills. The Dean of Sarum was responsible for a significant chunk of Berks - his court also proved many wills.

Why mention it now? Because the project has born fruit. The probate records of some 30 probate jurisdictions including the two aforementioned are now searchable online - and some images are available for download.

Buckinghamshire Resources & Offers / Buckinghamshire Owners of Land, 1873
« on: Wednesday 27 December 06 17:25 GMT (UK)  »
Some years ago I OCRed and checked the Buckinghamshire section of the 1873 Owners of Land survey. It was online for a couple of years but I don't suppose many people found it.

I have put it back online at
http://www.burrell-wood.org.uk/LHist/Places/Bucks/bucks1873.htm

If your ancestor owned an acre of Buckinghamshire in 1873 he should be there.

If you find an ancestor and you have a website of your own or if you run a website dedicated to local or family history to which this page is relevent then please link to this page. Links like this will make it easier for others to find the information therein - both by following the links and by promoting the page to the search engines like Google.

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Is Rootschat having problems?
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Tried to attach an image to a post - but clicking the Attach image link didn't result in the expected opportunity to enter image details (just opens and closes the list of other options).

Then tried the Help button at the top - to be told that Rootschat couldn't find the page I was looking for.

Anyone else having such difficulties?

Just tried the 'attach image' on this post and got the expected boxes to enter the images.

Went back to the area I wanted to post in (Berkshire Lookup Requests) and tried again - no joy, can't attach images to a reply or to a new post.  But I can in the main Berkshire forum.

Technical Help / Handheld computers & genealogy
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 00:08 GMT (UK)  »
I have an aged Palm which I use to carry around my family history data for reference in record offices etc. The data is stored using PAF for Palm (I use PAF on my home PC). It is very useful but not perfect - so I am considering an upgrade (hardware and software).

The main reason for changing the software is that the Palm version of the data does not include all the information.  When I add sources of data I will often include a transcript in the source data - PAF has an 'Actual text' field which I use for this.  This field is not transferred to the Palm so I have to either do without or copy the transcript to a person note field (not ideal as a single source entry can be referred to from several persons (eg a will transcript).

I see there are several handheld solutions based around Palm OS and Pocket PC - does anyone have experience of these? Any recommendations?

Oxfordshire / HEADs of Oxfordshire
« on: Monday 27 November 06 17:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found the baptism of my gggg grandmother, Mary HEAD, in Thame in 1740.  Next step - find her parents.

Six Head children are baptised - all refered to in their mother's will as sons or daughters. But the OFHS transcript for Thame shows 3 mothers (in order Eliz, Mary, Eliz, Mary, Sarah & Sarah).

Mary is the one who made the will in 1789 (long after the children were baptised.

So I am looking for the marriage of Richard HEAD to Elizabeth, Mary and/or Sarah 1730-40. The IGI has no obvious hits.

Buckinghamshire / HEADs of Buckinghamshire
« on: Thursday 23 November 06 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am descended from Mary HEAD who married Andrew HOLT in Edgcott in 1772.

While I suspect Mary came from Berkshire I have no firm evidence to prove this (only an 1812 poll book showing John HEAD from Grindon, Bucks as a freeholder in Peasemore, Berks - which makes it very, very likely she had connections to the Berks HEADs around Newbury - but no more).

Obviously there is also the possibility that she was from one of the Buckinghamshire HEAD families.  If anyone is researching this name in Bucks and has linked my Mary to anyone it would be great to hear from you.
