My g grandfather Thomas Mitchell b 1840 in England, was in Quebec around 1861-1865, he married Margaret Kerr 20 June 1862 and had two sons there Thomas 1863 and John 1864.  the family then moved back to Devon England, James born 1866 and then to Curragh, Charles born 1869

My g grandfather served with the 17th Regiment in Quebec as this is what is stated on his marriage certificate.

Can anyone tell me if this regiment also were in Devon and Curragh around the birth dates of his sons and is there any way I can find his military record?
Thanks

Could someone possibly find the marriage records and let me know what Thomas's occupation was.  I suspect he was in the armed forces but I'm not 100% sure, thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Move from England to Canada query
« on: Friday 28 December 07 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
My g grandfather Thomas Mitchell b 1840 in Halifax, England, was in Quebec around 1861-1865, he married Margaret and had two sons there Thomas 1863 and John 1864.  the family then moved back to Devon England, James born 1866 and then to Curragh, Charles born 1869.  He was back in Bradford in 1871

I wondered if anyone could throw some light on why he would move around so much, could he have been in the armed forces and if so how could I find out which regiment he was with?

It has also been suggested that these moves might have been job connected - he was working in the woollen mills before and after his travels, does anyone know if this could be the case?

World War Two / Middlesex Yeomanry WW2
« on: Monday 24 December 07 08:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for information about my uncle, Rene Laverack. In 1941 he was in No 3 squadron, Middlesex Yeomanry, 10th armoured division - info from a Christmas message sent to his brother.

I understand from members of the family that he was involved in a tank battle but no-one seems to know where or when but know it was a very disasterous battle. It seems he was the radion operator in the tank and not many survived the battle.

Can anyone help me with info about him, his regiment or the battle, thanks
