Ireland / CofI Vestry Minute Books
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
I've just found out that the RCB Library has Vestry minute books for a parish I'm interested in where the original Registers were lost. Has anybody examined any of these ?

I believe these books may have been used to record details that were later transferred into the actual registers... could they include the same sort of detail as the register ?

thanks,

Shane

Dublin / County Dublin Placename
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
does anybody have any ideas what this placename in Co. Dublin reads ?

the detail is from an 1846 marriage in Booterstown in South Dublin, and the person that the address relates to was an army man (possible recently retired).

thank you,

Ireland Resources / Introduction to Irish Records
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
Irish Civil records are intact and these include all Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1864, although some early births may have missed registration. In addition, non-Catholic and Registry Office marriages were included in the registers from 1845.

An Index to Civil records can be searched on the familysearch website at this link

Certs can then be ordered from the GRO using the references provided in the index record.

See these Rootschat topics for information on Civil records and Order Certs :

Also available online are the Irish 1901 and 1911 census (free) on the National Archives website. No other earlier complete Irish census returns have survived and only fragments of earlier ones for a few places survive.

For earlier dates church records will be required, and to start researching these you need to know two details : religious denomination & location i.e. parish, town or townland (see addition details on Church records in the next post).

Some records are available on a free website IrishGenealogy - at the moment this website includes details for counties Carlow (Cofi), Kerry (RC & CofI), Diocese of Cork & Ross (RC) and parts of Dublin city & county (RC, CofI & Presbyterian). Some other areas are available on several subscription and pay-per-view websites.

Location of actual records depends mainly on the religious denomination involved, but Catholic records are available on microfilm in the National Library in Kildare St, in Dublin (website : http://www.nli.ie/), and most Church of Ireland records are available in the Representative Church Body Library in Rathfarnham (website : http://ireland.anglican.org/library/).

Records for certain parishes are available in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (RC, CofI and Presbyterian) - mostly for Ulster counties, and many RC records have been filmed by the LDS and are available through their libraries.

There are also some useful extracted civil record collections on familysearch :

 Births, 1864-1881
 Marriages, 1845-1870
 Deaths, 1864-1870 (not many included)

For more details on these and other sources see the various topics on the Rootschat Ireland Resources section and under each of the county boards.

Link to the IGI section on familysearch : International Genealogical Index
(many of these records are submitted and need to be verified. These are now referred to 'Community Contributed' records)

Cork / Nevin / Blackrock
« on: Friday 05 March 10 08:16 GMT (UK)  »
A couple of general questions for the Cork experts...

ggg-grandparents of mine married in The Chapel of St. Michael CofI (parish St. Finn Barrs) in Cork in 1854, but I know very little at this stage about the brides side of the family. Her name is Catherine Nevin, residence given as Blackrock, born c1838, and her father Andrew was a gardener. I am guessing that he may have worked in the gardens of a big house or estate in the Blackrock area

The groom Samuel Hodges was a coastguard based at Blackrock station at the time.

I am hoping the the upcoming parish records on IrishGenealogy will cover the area and give me some leads, but in the meantime :

does anyone know where the Coastguard station was located ?

were (are) there any big houses or estate nearby that are worth investigating ?

thanks,

Shane

Dublin Resources & Offers / Link: Co. Dublin towns & street listings, 1848
« on: Monday 01 February 10 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
I've been able to scan the county Dublin section of Thom's Directory of 1848, and have processed the town descriptions through OCR. These provide information on the location, some history, details of principle buildings etc

  link : http://www.rootschat.com/links/07z1/

I also hope to add the images from the street listing sections for these towns over the next week or two.
