Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / look up request 1861 census
« on: Thursday 27 July 06 04:56 BST (UK)  »
   1861 census request lookup.

Looking for William Frankish, born  1852 Hunmanby, Yorkshire.  So he would be about 8 or 9 years old.

There is a Christening Feb 26 1852 on LDS records that might be mine, whose mother is listed as Bessy Frankish..No father mentioned.

In 1895, William Frankish  had a business in Manchester. He was married to Ann (Slack)  He was a master bootmaker. His shop was at 515 Stockport Rd Manchester.
Nearby was another Frankish, a John M. Frankish at 535 Stockport rd, a Boiler Inspector. I wondered if they might be brothers, so I hope he  shows up on the 1861 census too.

Thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / lookup request 1871 census Manchester
« on: Wednesday 28 June 06 23:51 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure when this family arrived in England. I have them on the 1881 but am looking for more clues.   They may have been living at 10 Medlock st. Deansgate, Manchester. They were there in 1874 and 1881.

I am looking for Annie Maria Boyle, age about 7 or 8 years old, born Ireland. Her father: John Boyle (he died 1874 in England), her mother: Mary Boyle, both born 1833/34 in Ireland.

Annie told her children of a frightening voyage during a stormy crossing from Ireland, so likely she did come as a child.

On the 1881 census there are other people living with them:

Thomas Boyle, Lodger un. b about 1862, Hog salesman b Ireland( no relation, as Annie Maria married him)

His father, also a Thomas Boyle, was at the wedding, seemingly living elsewhere( I wonder why Thomas Jr did  not live with his father? )

James Boyle, lodger, married b about 1809 Cattle salesman b Ireland ( where is his wife? Is he John's father? or perhaps grandfather of Thomas Jr.)

and another Lodger: Robert Knox, m 37 railway carter b Ireland.

Thankyou.

Armed Forces / Pay Sergeant, RN-? 1881 census
« on: Friday 26 May 06 05:42 BST (UK)  »
The occupation of Richard Brindley on the 1881 census is a bit of a puzzle. I would like to know which branch of the services he was in.
It cannot be Royal Navy, can it? a sergeant?

There is, it seems, a letter following the 'RN' that the transcriber could not make out. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Perhaps if someone has access to the original census they could see if they can make out that last letter.

Any suggestions?

Richard BRINDLEY   Head   M   Male   32   Hammersmith, Middlesex, England   Pay Sergeant R N (...)

London and Middlesex / Old London Newspaper
« on: Sunday 25 December 05 03:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have  this old  London newspaper called 'The Sun.'  Printed at 112 The Strand. This issue was published Friday Oct 7th 1814. There are a few BMDs which I can list if that is ok.

Although I have had this paper for years I have not really looked at it till recently( it was out of sight, out of mind, stored  in a box with a few old ' Times'  papers.)

How fascinating these old papers are. The little fragile thin newspaper is two sheets folded,  ie. 4 pages,  and it cost  sixpence halfpenny!! I wonder what that would be equivalent to nowadays! It was obviously not for 'the great unwashed!'
I started reading about the stamp tax  which elevated the price of newspapers out of the reach of most working people, so the they  would not become inflamed with subversive ideas. :) like, I suppose, toppling the Monarchy etc .

There are some interesting little pieces in this paper, including a letter of endorsement for medicine "Leakes Patent Pills" from some poor gent suffering from 'Hues Venerea.' I looked it up it is Syphilis. He has had great relief. Maybe it had mercury in it?  He says he has had it since 1790.  He says he is much improved and now he is 'fat and jolly".   :) He is probably fictional but his name is given as Alex Murker of  Swann's Close, High Street, Edinburgh. he has witmesses to his cure: John Thompson 3, New Poultry market. Edin. and John McIntosh of Old Assembly Close, Edin.
Then, main seller,  Thomas Taylor, member Royal College of Surgeons, number 9 New Bridge Steet London (his residence)  also follows a list of other sellers of the medicine in England ,Scotland and Ireland, and more 'puffery.

The BMD's.(faint and hard to read)

Berkshire / Church records, Windsor. BRINDLEY
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 05:37 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping to find the 1st marriage of John Brindley . He joined the 2nd regiment Life Guards in 1815 (he was born about 1792 in Audley Staffs) .

He had a son, also John, b about 1822 and a son William b about 1828-29. Likely he married 1815 - 18 22. Would also like to find Baptisms births etc of the two sons.

His wife( I would like to know her name) died before 1839 and probably buried in Windsor.
When John remarried in 1839 he was living in Spital New Windsor. Both sons give their birthplace as Windsor on other documents.

I read online that the Archdeaconry of Berkshire was part of the diocese of Salisbury before 1836 and bishops transcripts and some other documents are under the direction of the diocesan courts at Wiltshire record office at Trowbridge( all very confusing)  I am hoping someone out there has access to these records and will take a look for me.  or advise me.  I don't know which church they would have attended but I think they were Anglican.
 Thanks

Looking for a Mary Brindley or Mary BOND on 1871 census for Kensington. age about  40 yrs.

Mary Brindley  may have married a George Bond,  Dec 1866.

She is a bit of a puzzle.
If this is 'my' Mary Brindley, on the 1861 census,  she was living with the Duffin family at 3 Henry Place, Hammersmith, (St Pauls) as a boarder, age 30  single,  no occupation listed, born at sea.

On the 1851 census, 14 ( or 4) Windsor Terrace, Hammersmith,  there was a Mary Brindley age 19  Bonnet maker, listed as a 'daughter' of John and Martha Brindley, but 'married'. so more likely to be a 'daughter- in -law.'

There was a John Brindley Junior also living therealso married so perhaps Mary and John jr were husband and wife.  Mary ' born in Kings county  Ireland'
Not likely John and Martha  Brindley ever went to Ireland.

John and Martha Brindley both died before 1861,  John Jr may have died in 1859, not yet verified) so Mary could have been a boarder with the Duffins. Yet she said she was 'single' and not 'widowed' on the 1861?

If Mary married George Bond and is on the 1871 census she would be  about 40yrs of age. her birthpace may be 'Ireland' or 'born at sea'.

Thank you

London and Middlesex / Brindley family originally from Audley, Staffs.
« on: Thursday 05 May 05 03:55 BST (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone connects to this branch of the Brindley family? :)

John Brindley b  1792  Parish of Audley Staffs.
Father was William Brindley, Iron Monger.
John enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Life Guards at Newcastle-under-Lyme in July 1815 age 23.  He gave his occupation as a 'nailer'

He spent 25 years in the service and served  'with good conduct' in England. He left due to ill health. He spent most of his life in Kensington, Chelsea and Windso, Berks..

He married ( I do not know his first wife's  name I would really like to have that information) and had at least 2 children:  John Jr,  b about 1822 and William, b about 1828.

In 1839,  John Brindley ( now a Widower) married for the second time to Martha Adams  ( B 1814) at St Luke's, Chelsea.

They had a daughter, also Martha, born 1839. at Spital, New Windsor.

On the 1841 census,  living nr. Queen's Terrace, Chelsea were: John Brindley,  47 ( now a Blacksmith.) nb London
Martha Brindley wife, age 27 b. London
Martha  Brindley dau age 2 b London
and William Brindley (son 1st marriage) age 14 not born London.

On the 1851 census, Shepherd's Bush, Hammersmith.

John Brindley, 59, Chelsea Pensioner, b Audley Staffs.
Martha Brindley, wife 36 laundress, b London, Mdx
John  Brindley Jr, son ( of 1st marriage) 29 M Tailor b Windsor, Berks.
Mary  Brindley, daughter 19 M Bonnet maker, b King's County Ireland
( This is probably a mistake and Mary is likely a daughter-in-law married to John Jr.?
(William Brindley, son ( of 1st marriage) living elsewhere as a servant.  Unknown where he was born.
Martha Brindley, daughter 11 scholar b Windsor, Berks.
Henry Brindley son 9 scholar b Chelsea Mdx.
Richard Brindley, son 2 b Shepherd's Bush.

Feb 1852 William Brindley 22 Bachelor Servant,  married

Sarah Willies 20 Spinster at Hammersmith Parish.
Her father, Geo Willies, labourer
His father, John Brindley, Soldier 2nd Life Guards.
Witnesses: James John Brindley (I don't knowwho he is?) and Mary Brindley.

In 1855 John Brindley died, age about 63, St Paul's Hammersmith. Present at the death, Mary Brindley, 7 British Grove, Chiswick.

Census 1861 Hammersmith,  I have:
William Brindley M 33 Coal Porter b Windsor, Berks.
Sarah (Willies) Brindley wife M 28 Laundress, b East hamstead Berks.
Teresa Brindley dau 6 b East Hamstead, Berks.
Walter Brindley son 4  b Hammersmith, Mdx.
John Brindley son 2     b Hammersmith, Mdx.

If anyone finds any of these other Brindleys mentioned on the 1851 on the 1861 census I would be very grateful to have that information)

1862, St Mary's church district chapel, West Brompton MDX
Marriage:
William Leach 25 bachelor bricklayer,
7 Colchester Terrace, Mdx.  Father,  Stephen Leach, bricklayer.

Martha Ann Brindley 23 Spinster

Martha (Brindley) Leach 33  Laundress, b Windsor
Amelia Leach dau 6  b Chelsea
Mary (Ann?) Leach  dau 5 b Chelsea
Annie Leach dau 14 months b Hammersmith.

Both William Leach and Martha ( Brindley) Leach( daughter of John the Soldier) died young and the girls were sent to an orphanage in Surrey.

Some of the following is  unverified and speculative:
John Brindley,( b about 1859) son of William Brindley (son of John the soldier) and Sarah (Willies) Brindley married  Caroline( nee?)  b about  1855, they had a son, George Brindley, b 1880.

Henry Brindley( Son of John the Soldier) b 1841 M Amelia Platt they had 6 children, Sarah,( b 1869) Mary, (b 1870) Edward, (b 1874)John,( b 1876) Mary( b 1879). Walter( B 1881)

Ireland / Shaughnessy
« on: Tuesday 22 March 05 07:40 GMT (UK)  »
Remote chance I know, but does anyone know this family:
on the Salford UK 1851. I would really like to know which county(at least) they came from. They were Catholics.

William Shaughnessy  43,  b about 1808   Blacksmith,  b Ireland but no county given

His wife Ann (nee?) Shaughnessy b about 1809   Ireland

Son James Shaughnessy b about 1831,  Cabinet maker, Ireland

son Michael Shaughnessy b about 1833, tenter cotton, Ireland

They also had 3 other known children born in Salford. The first one, Thomas,  being born in 1843.

With ten years  between Michael and Thomas it seems likely there may have been other children.

William and Ann Shaughnessy were probably married 1825 to 1831 and moved to England  1833 - 1843

Different spellings were used in this family, eg Shannessy, Shaunessy and Shaughnessy.
