How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / personal text
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

As you can see I've got up my image but haven't been able to change the font or size in the Personal text section of my Profile.
I did a search but all I came up with were scan and paste - seems a hammer to crack a nut - so there must be some way. I don't have to modify my browser option do I?
I've got round it for the moment but it's not as clear as most.
Please, what am I doing wrong ???

Hi I'm trying to find info on Ann Brown who from marriage cert info and 1851 census (aged 23) was born 1827-1828 in Willesden. Father was a Benjamin Brown, labourer. The IGI has a christening for an Ann in Oct  1827, St James, Paddington. Father Benjamin and mother Elizabeth but can't find anything else.

The Common Room / Deciphering Census occupation - COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have been trying to decipher the occupation listed on the 1861 census for Denbigh, N Wales.  I've blown it up, used magnifying glass, done everything but can't make it out. It's definitely a Collector of (something)  Rates - but what.
The first leter is an H (see how Head is written) and the next letter is an i. The last letter I think must be a y because all the other gs on the page are closed.
Anyone got any ideas - and please not 'Collector of rats' - I said that and brought the house down ;D :o ???
Thanks to everyone. Hiwayman it is ;D

Armed Forces / 4th Battalion, 60th Rifles - whereabouts 1870s
« on: Monday 06 February 06 15:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to locate a John Henry Evans (b.c. 1851, Paddington) who married in 1873 at Winchester.  His occupation is given as Corporal, 4th Battalion, 60th Rifles (precurser to Royal Green Jackets?) and residence as Winchester Barracks. By 1876 he was a porter on the railways.
I can find nothing definite about him before 1873. I searched the Nat Archive site but I gather that unless he was pensioned or an officer there would be no record.
Does anyone have any ideas about a possible search.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / where to post
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a problem resesearching my husband's grt grandfather. He moved around quite a bit, so a county-based listing might not be best. Again, he was in the Army (4th battalion, 60th rifle regiment - tried site and Nat Archives - no luck). Have marriage cert but can't find father (not really reliable anyway, he could be illegit). After marriage and Army he worked on GWR - porter and various until, in 1897 when his son married, he is a Railway Guard.
Question - what to do when all investigations from afar seem to come up with nothing? I can't get to Kew to look at relevant docs. Should I employ a researcher. Help! Any advice, etc. gratefully..... ??? ???
