This may be of interest to any military sleuths out there and I thought it worthy of a posting.
This relates to the recent remains found by archaeologists looking for the dug out described in Wilfred Owens poem "The Sentry "
After finding one such shelter containing the remains of two German soldiers and one British soldier the German soldiers were eventually identified and family contacted but as yet the British soldier remains a mystery.
The only clues were from two Kings Own shoulder titles apparently relating to the 1st Kings Own,12th Brigade,4th Division and the other being his only personal effect, a purse containing a small amount of coins.
Amongst them and in a separate pocket held apart the others was a Jersey 1/12 of a shilling coin dated 1913. The fact that it was kept apart suggests it held a special meaning. It has been suggested that he may have been stationed in Jersey at some time or of course he may have simply picked this up in change.
One of those involved with this investigation is Mr Alastair Fraser of Durham University along with the No Mans Land Group
Mr Fraser may be contacted at frasersmountpleasant[AT]tiscali.co
if anyone can shed any light on this.
It would certainly be a tremendous feat if someone here at Rootschat was able to provide that vital piece of evidence which leads to a breakthrough.
Thanks for listening and hopeful of a positive outcome.
