Australia Lookups completed / Shipwrecks - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 24 May 08 12:59 BST (UK)  »
In the Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper (London) of 6 February 1887 was an account of the collison of the Keilawarra and the Helen Nichol between Sydney and Brisbane, resulting in the loss of 40 passengers and crew, including the captain.

One lady, Helen Wilson, of Queensland floated on a piece of plank, but her husband was unable to hold out, drowned.   A whole family named Schepper, belonging to Maryborough, Queensland (father, mother and six children) had been on a visit to Germany and almost within sight of home, were lost.

Their deaths on the NSW BDM site are recorded only with the surname Schepper, whether they were male or female and the place of registration is given as "Marine".

Australia Lookups completed / Loss of ship "Kapunda" 1887 - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 24 May 08 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Just come across an account of the loss of the emigrant ship Kapunda on its way to Western Australia.   Many passengers were engaged to construct the railway from Albany to Beverley, about 244 miles.

It had left Plymouth on 18 December 1886 and was off the coast of Brazil when it collided with the Ada Melmore, a British barque on 20 January 1887.

Both vessles sank.  It was at three o'clock in the morning.  298 people were lost from the Kapunda with 2 lost from the Ada Melmore.  There was only 16 survivors from both ships.

Most of the names, ages and addresses are given. It is from Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper (London, England) 6 February 1887.    I can look up any names if you are interested.

Australia Lookups completed / Newspaper deaths pre 1860
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 20:35 BST (UK)  »
I have collected many deaths in newspapers of people living in Australia, who had lived in Australia or who were going to Australia.

At the moment I have about 800, mostly 1840s and 1850s, so rather than just store them on a CD I have put an index up:

Hope someone finds something of interest in them.  And if you have any to add, please let me know.

« on: Saturday 10 May 08 07:04 BST (UK)  »
This is a partial index to some deaths in old newspapers in Australia and U.K. Any mention of Australia is included.  It is in no way complete, but is an ongoing project.

At this stage, there are about 800 deaths,  mainly 1840s and 1850s.  Any contributions are gladly welcomed but please give reference and if available on the internet, the website address.

www.hillendfamilyhistoryexpo.org

Cowra:  12 April 2008.  Speakers:
Christine Yeats (State Records Kingswood), Helen Dickinson (NSW Land Research Specialist), Marilyn Rowan (Transcription Agent, NSW & Victorian BDM).  More details from Cowra Family History Group.  I'll send contact phone number privately if required.

Australia / Vic Deaths lookup please
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone please lookup the deaths of the children of Joseph Powell Ostler and his wife Susan Annie.  They arrived in Victoria in December 1859 and were gone from Victoria by 1862.

The children were noted on the Unassisted Immigrants as:
Susanna Ostler, age 1 in 1859
William Ostler, age 1 in 1859

The couple went on to have Ellen A Ostler in Chiltern in about 1860.

Many thanks
Jean

Australia / Donhead St Mary, Wiltshire, England
« on: Friday 25 January 08 19:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have had no replies to this message on the Wiltshire list so I am trying here as well.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,280758.0.html

I have an undated sheet headed "The Early Heroes", which was apparently part of a newsletter, being a series of articles about families who migrated from Donhead St Mary, Wiltshire, England to Australia in the 1830s.

This one was about the Read brothers, John and Charles.
The next issue was to be about their brothers-in-laws, Oxfords and Ingrams.

The article looks as though it was typed on a portable typewriter
(definitely not a computer) so it is probably older than 1998.

Can anyone shed some light on what it is from and where I might be able to
find the next issue.

Thanks

Jean
