Dorset / Luffman family of Oborne
« on: Monday 02 February 09 18:23 GMT (UK)  »
Is this  family who migrated to Oborne early in the 18th century the same family  as the Luffman family who lived in Maperton Somerset during most of the 17th century? Please cross reference with my posting on the Somerset board.

Somerset / LUFFMAN family of Maperton
« on: Monday 02 February 09 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
John Luffman d Maperton 1662, father of Grace b Maperton 1615 and of Henry d Maperton 1673, whose son Richard was b Maperton 1653. Where did the family come from, and did they as seems likely migrate to Oborne Dorset around the end of the 17th century? If so, why?All spellings are as above, though sometimes surname spelt Lufman.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1911 census mistranscriptions
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
Apparently given their geographical locations it is apparent to me that ALL the people shown as SUFFMAN on the 1911 census should in fact be LUFFMAN. I believe this to be due to a capital copperplate L being taken as a capital S by a transcriber who was unfamiliar with this script which was very common in the early 20th century. I have reported the errors, and await developments. The important general point for all researchers is the copperplate L.

The Common Room / 18th century Christian names
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
During my search of Oborne Dorset registers I have come across the name Eranomous Eyres. There are a variety of spellings. The only name I know that resembles this is Hieronymous. This is a male name meaning Jerusalem, whilst the Eranomous is a woman. Has anyone else encountered this name, and if so where, and in what period?

« on: Tuesday 30 December 08 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
During the 18th century the Luffman family lived in the Dorset villages on Oborne,Sherbourne,Stourton Caundle, Purse Caundle,Gillingham and the Somerset parishes of Henstridge, Milborne Port, Cheriton (N&S) Charlton Horethorne, Horsington, all of which were owned by the Digby family of Sherborne Castle. Does anyone know whether they were in service to the Digbys, or rented land from them as tenant farmers? They are often described as Yeomen in the Parish registers

Edward Stanton b Rippingale c1741 moved to Heckington where he married Mary Baxter believed b Heckington. Any information on these families particularly Stanton at Rippingale would be very welcome. Both families seem to have been wheelwrights whilst at Heckington.

Travelling People / Village Carriers
« on: Thursday 18 December 08 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
Several of my father's ancestors on both sides were shown as village carriers or carters. Would they be classed as travellers. So far as I know they had adresses they used as a base.
