The Common Room / What happened to www.placenames.org.uk ?
« on: Monday 27 May 19 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Until a few months ago there was an excellent site called www.placenames.org.uk that gave all the names of pretty much everywhere that has ever been recorded in the UK. Then one day it just disappeared. Does anybody know what happened and if it is under a new web address ?

Hi, Attached is an inscription from a grave in Cheshire. The first word is clearly 'August' and the year is '1799'. But I am uncertain on the day. I know the person was buried on the 12th. So, the day of death is likely the 8th or 9th. But the '9' in '1799' looks entirely different. Is this an '8' written as it often was in Registers - almost on its side like an infinity symbol ?  Or is it '2nd' - meaning over a week between death and burial ? Or another day ? And what is the superscript ? It does not look like 'th'. Any thoughts/comments welcome.

Attached is an Apr 1737 baptism entry for a relative. It reads as "Philebe". However, this person then disappears without trace. A sister, whose name is variously written as "Phyllis" and "Phillis" is a perfect contemporary - and I cannot locate her baptism entry. Based on this, I am fairly certain they are one and the same person.  Does anybody know if the "Philebe" here is a variant spelling of the time and/or maybe the 'b' is a variant on the long vertical 's' sometimes used ?

Graveyards and Gravestones / Illegible word on grave - can anybody help ?
« on: Sunday 28 April 19 17:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello, can anybody please help with this word which is in a kind of Pugin-Style Gothic script ? The preceding word is, "Anne" and then after it states "of Richard Janion Nevill of Llangennech Park". It is in English but in a graveyard in Wales so there is a slight possibility that this one word is Welsh - albeit, unlikely. Anne was the wife of Richard and died after him so it could be 'widow' or 'relict' but it clearly isn't.

Occupation Interests / Roman Catholic priest - post-nominal letters.
« on: Wednesday 24 April 19 13:59 BST (UK)  »
I have come across a "Very Reverend" RC priest with the post-nominal letters "P.P." and "U.F.". I assume these relate to a religious order but have looked online and found nothing. He was based in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo in Ireland. Can anybody help ? Thank you.

World War Two / WW2 Army cap badge - can anyone identify ?
« on: Wednesday 24 April 19 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello, Is anybody able to identify the soldier's cap badge, please ? I am afraid this is the best resolution available as the original is slightly out of focus. Thank you.

I have a relative who died in Ballinasloe Asylum in December 1918. He and 7 other people on the death register page died of influenza - a total of 8 out of ten on just one page and all within 5 days. I know Ballinasloe was a mental asylum but was it used also as an 'influenza hospital' during the global flu pandemic of 1918 to 1920 ? Somewhat related, given fears of infection - does anybody know what happened regarding burials ? Thank you.
