Would one birth have two registrations?
When I tried to find the birth registration for a gggfaaather William Guess/Guest born 1843 Bedford. I found two registrations with the same reference number.
(married and dies as Guest but on census as Farmer or Guest)
1. William Guess Farmer 1843 Oct-Dec Bedford vol 6 page 21
2. William Guess Guess 1843 Oct-Dec Bedford vol 6 page 21
I sent for the certificate and William is registered as born 14th November 1843 and registered as William Guess. (neither of the above)
Father William Guess General Labourer Bedford
Mother Jennette Farmer formerly Halfhead
Widowers William Guess aged 52 and Janet Farmer aged 38 (father James Halfhead) married 26 Sep 1853.
I think Williams previous wife Mary died 1838 and that Janets husband John died 1841.
Although they did not marry until 1853 they are together on 1851 census in Bedford William (head) Jennett Farmer is housekeeper her son William 1844 is Farmer.
Because I have the birth certificate I am certain that I have the right family. I accept that due to illiteracy the name changed from Guess to Guest to Guess (finally settling on Guest).
But it does appear that one child William was registered twice with two names. He was obviously born as Farmer. Although the original index show him also as William Guess Guess, his certificate show William Guess.
Could this happen? Could a child be registered father be unmarried?
