Family History Beginners Board / Two Birth registations for same person Guess/Guest
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
Would one birth have two registrations?
When I tried to find the birth registration for a gggfaaather William Guess/Guest born 1843 Bedford. I found two registrations with the same reference number.
(married and dies as Guest but on census as Farmer or Guest)
1. William Guess Farmer 1843 Oct-Dec Bedford vol 6 page 21
2. William Guess Guess 1843 Oct-Dec Bedford vol 6 page 21

I sent for the certificate and William is registered as born 14th November 1843 and registered as William Guess. (neither of the above)
Father William Guess General Labourer Bedford
Mother Jennette Farmer formerly Halfhead

Widowers William Guess aged 52 and Janet Farmer aged 38 (father James Halfhead) married 26 Sep 1853.
I think Williams previous wife Mary died 1838 and that Janets husband John died 1841.

Although they did not marry until 1853 they are together on 1851 census in Bedford William (head) Jennett Farmer is housekeeper her son William 1844 is Farmer.

Because I have the birth certificate I am certain that I have the right family. I accept that due to illiteracy the name changed from Guess to Guest to Guess (finally settling on Guest).

But it does appear that one child William was registered twice with two names. He was obviously born as Farmer. Although the original index show him also as William Guess Guess, his certificate show William Guess.
Could this happen? Could a child be registered father be unmarried?

Sussex Lookup Requests / TRIGG Birth Record Wadhurst Kent or Sussex
« on: Thursday 01 January 09 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody help please. I cannot find a birth registration for my paternal g.grandfather Samuel TRIGG. The nearest entry I can find is for 'Male' TRIGG 1845 Apr-June volume 7 page 478 in Ticehurst Kent Sussex. My geography for that area is poor and am not sure where a child would be registered.  I do not know where to search (which County or Parish) and would like to trace the family back further.

On the 1841 census Samuel's parents William TRIGG born 1799 (Agri Lab) and Anne UNDERHILL born 1809 Lamberhurst Kent and they were living at 'Stevens' Civil Parish is Wadhurst in the Hundred of Loxfield Pelham in the County of Sussex. Perhaps this may give a clue to his birth records. Also what Parish records would cover this area which I believe may be on the couny borders?

For Census returns he was born in Wadhurst which can be either Kent or Sussex. I know very little about parish registers and have really hit a brick wall. What I know from BDM certificates and census returns is.

Samuel TRIGG married 4 February 1878 on his marriage certificate his occupation is given as a Gunner in the Royal Artillery based at Shoeburyness Essex (the Army certainly mixed up our gene pool).  On his marriage certificate his fathers name is given as William TRIGG (deceased in 1878).

On 1851 census Samuel TRIGG is 5 years old born 1846 Wadhurst Sussex his father is William born 1799 Frant Sussex his mother is Ann born 1809 Lamberhurst Kent. They were living ?Shriles (near to Turners Green) Wadhurst Sussex.
On 1861 census Samuel TRIGG is 15 years old born 1846 Wadhurst Sussex his father is William born 1799 Frant Kent his mother is Ann born 1809 Lamberhurst Kent. They were living at Stevens Cottage Wadhurst Sussex.
The 1871 census  I cannot find Samuel TRIGG  but assume this may be due to his military corer (and would appreciate any help there too).

On 1881 census Samuel TRIGG born 1857 ? (I believe is a poor transcription) Wadhurst Kent is married and a Sargeant in the Royal Artillery.
On 1891 census Samuel TRIGG born 1845 Wadhurst Kent is a Watchman in Braintree Essex.
On 1901 census Samuel TRIGG born 1847 Wadhurst Kent is a House Caretaker in Shoebury Essex.

Can anybody help regarding his birth and also which Parish register need to be looked at (and 'How' in words of one syllable for me please). Thank you in advance for any help.

Devon Lookup Requests / Tavistock CROSSMAN
« on: Thursday 01 January 09 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first posting therefore please forgive any errors. I have been tracing my family using BDM certificates and census returns, now for Parish records! I have used Family Search but all the results are from "submitted" files which I am aware (through your very helpful forum search) are not totally reliable and need checking, which I would be really grateful for help/direction.

What I know from census/BDM is;
My paternal grandmother was Mary (Polly) CROSSMAN born 25th July 1855 Morwellhan Tavistock Devon.
Her father was Robert CROSSMAN Labourer born circa 1815 Tavistock died 1869 her mother was Eliza JAGOE born circa 1817 Tavistock.
On the 1841 and 1851 census the family were living in Brook Street, Buckland but in 1861 ? Murrel Lane Tavistock St Paul (I would appreciate clarification if possible). The last census entry I found is 1871 for Eliza (widow) occupation Charwoman as head of household at Tavistock St Paul's which I think is Morwelhan.
The only other fact I have is that on the 1851 census Robert CROSSMAN brother John CROSSMAN born 1801 Tavistock was living with the family.

This is where my calculations may be iffy and I need help / conformation. (submitted files)

I looked on family search for parents of two sons Robert (my ggranfather) and John and found a George CROSSMAN 1781-1846 married to Elizabeth 1778-1845 (no surname would love to know).
then George's parents
John CROSSMAN 1744-???? married to Joan 1746-????
then John's parents
John CROSSMAN ???? and Christian EASTLAKE ????

These names and dates could be very useful but (am I being greedy) are only names.
Sorry for the long message but thought I should give as much information as possible.
On my 2009 wish list is. Are these names correct? How can I find out more i.e. what Parish records can be checked? What more can I find out about these people (not very interesting I suppose but they are my family).

Thank you in advance for any help offered
