World War Two / Interpreting WW2 war record
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 14:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am trying to make sense of my grandfather in law's war record. I know that he was POW and returned back to the UK on 02/5/1945.
Thereafter it states:
T List ? 2/5/45
P/A 8 Res Reg 6/7/45
ERE 23/8/45 6 Formation College
Relegated Class Z(T) Reserve Class C Release 30/11/45

I would be grateful for more information about what the above might mean.

He was finally discharged on 2/4/52.

Many thanks,

Jac

Completed Census Requests / Census records for ships
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 18:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am struggling to find out any more information about John Orton, probably born around 1800 who in 1846 was a Master Mariner according to his son's marriage certificate. I can not find him on any 1841 or 1851 census records because he was probably at sea. Are there any census records of ships vessels, if so, where do I find the information?

It is likely that he sailed out of London or Liverpool as his son was born in London, Middlesex in abt 1824 but by 1851 his son, also John Orton, & also a mariner in 1846 was married & living in Liverpool.

I can't find his son on the 1841 census either, so maybe they were both at sea at the time.

Hope someone can help me take this a stage further.

Lancashire / Hit a brick wall for Charles Joseph Livesley-Leigh. Help please.
« on: Sunday 19 August 07 18:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am at my wits end, hitting my head against a very large brick wall so I am hoping that someone may be able to come up with suggestions of where to go next.

I am stuck on my g.g.grandfather Charles Joseph Livesley (or Livesey).

Here is what I have got so far:-

Marriage at Tyldesley Chapel to Mary Dutton 22/4/1867 He was aged 21 years, a coal miner, living in Atherton, Leigh. His father was James, a collier.

They had two children, James (my g.grandfather) & Mary Ellen.  James was born 19/01/1868 at Doctors Nook, Pennington & Mary Ellen was born 5/4/1870 at Lord St. Pennington.

I have searched & searched all variants of the spelling of Livesley but I can’t find a birth for him around 1845 nor can I find him or his father on any census records.

The only census records that I can find is in 1871, his wife Mary & children were living with her parents in Gas St. Pennington. The census record is not very clear but I think that it states Mary as being married not widowed but I suppose that could have been wrong.  In 1881 the children were still living with Mary’s parents in Platt St. Atherton (although they have been incorrectly given the surname of Dutton) but no sign of Mary.

I can’t find a death entry either for Charles. Mary died in 1889 and was “widow” of Charles Livesley so he must have died before 1889. On his son James’s marriage certificate in 1887 it doesn’t state father “deceased” so that would put his death between 1887 & 1889.

Why can I not find him on the 1851, 1861, 1871 or 1881 census records?  Where was Mary in 1881?

Has anyone any theories or suggestions?

Cheers, Jacqui

World War Two / Photo-Stalag 383-106 Liverpool RHA & 129 Batt.15(IOM)LAA,RA
« on: Thursday 07 June 07 14:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have access to quite a few photographs of my grandfather-in-law whilst POW in Stalag 383. He was in the 129th battery, 15th (Isle of Man) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, RA.  One of the photographs was taken with the 106th Lancashire RHA. He says that most of the men were from Liverpool. If anyone has an interest in either of these two regiments & would like a copy of the photograph/s to try to identify a relative then please let me know.

Best regards, Jacqui

Hi, This a photo of my grandfather, the one on the left. He was part of the 1/10th Manchester Regiment. A keen sportsman, he was obviously part of the 1/10th's cricket team. This photo was taken by L. Dage Photographers, Pont Remy, Somme, France, probably in 1917. It has suffered some damage that appears to give my grandfather a "halo", I'm sure he was not that saintly!!. Would anyone be able to have a go restoring it. Many thanks, Jacqui

Lancashire / Oldham Athletic FC - Player in the early 1900's
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have recently found out that my grandfather was a professional footballer for Oldham Athletic before WW1. Are there any footie fans out there that would be able to offer advice as to how to find information / photos of players at that time? I have done the obvious and e-mailed the football club but as yet no reply.
My grandfather was Walter John Howarth b. 1892, so I suppose he could have played for Oldham Athletic any time from say 1907 until the start of the war in 1915.

Cheers, Jacqui

Hi,

We have found some medal ribbons and think that they are from WWII. We have identified the war medal ribbon and defence medal ribbon but could anyone identify which medal the third ribbon, on the right, is from.

Many thanks, Jacqui

Armed Forces / Help with RAF record
« on: Sunday 25 February 07 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I could do with some help with the RAF record of my grandfather Harry Orton.
Does anyone know what the following means?

1.Cherbourg to Sick on Leave 11/05/18 appears to be scored out with a note underneath stating Disp Cert 36700. What is a Disp Cert & what does it mean?
2. Blandford to ?? for Disp. 21/01/19. What does this say/mean?
3. Medical Board Examination result. Med. ???  A. I think this must mean that he was unfit to carry on duty as his records appear to be sent to Blandford after this date. Has anyone any guesses as to what it actually says?
