Armed Forces / Help with second line, please?
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 17:01 BST (UK)  »
This is a snip from a military record of a man b. 1842.

I can see the first line reads "Silver Medal for 'Long Service and Good Conduct' ", but I'm not entirely clear what the second line is all about unless it's just a record of where in the Army's papers the LSGC award was recorded.

Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks

South Africa / Death in 1908
« on: Wednesday 26 April 23 16:56 BST (UK)  »
I've just found a burial record for at 13yo boy in 1908, that says "accidentally strangled" and see that there was an inquest held on 14 Dec 1908.  I wondered if there were any online newspapers from that time that I could access to see if there was a report of what exactly happened.

Does anyone know of such a link, please?

Thanks

World War Two / Likely date of re-call for service in WW2
« on: Saturday 11 March 23 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
If a soldier served from 1932 and was then discharged to the reserve in July 1939, when would he have been [likely to be] recalled to the colours, please?  Would the Army have waited until war was actually declared (i.e. 3 Sept 1939) or would it have been earlier than that?

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Where are you, great uncle Charles?
« on: Sunday 12 February 23 18:09 GMT (UK)  »
Charles Albert Goodwin was born 4.1.1881 in Rowstock (or Harwell), Berkshire and I already have him on the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census.  In 1909 he married Edith Mary Dearlove and between 1912-1918 they had three sons.  By the time of the 1939 Register, Charles and Edith are living together with two of their sons (I suspect the third had already enlisted in the forces by then), and Charles dies in 1975.

I've found Edith on the 1921 census, as a chambermaid, but there's no sign of Charles.
Two of the sons are living with Charles' married sister Mary and the other is with Edith's widowed mother.

There's a newspaper report in the Berks & Oxford Advertiser dated July 1919 that Charles was convicted of larceny and sentenced to four months hard labour, but that would have been served by the time of the 1921 census.  I can't find any other newspaper reports of further crimes but I did wonder if he was, once again, at "His Majesty's pleasure" at the time of the 1921 census.

Can anyone find him for me, please?

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Regiment Identification help, please
« on: Saturday 04 February 23 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me, from the collar dogs, which regiment this chap served in, please?

I can see that the medals are Boer War ones, but he has a very common name and as Boer War medal rolls only give the initial of given names, I need to narrow down the possible options.

Many thanks

Technical Help / Looking for free "simple" photo editing software, Win11
« on: Sunday 22 January 23 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
Having recently upgraded from Win10 to Win11, it seems that "spot removal" in the Snipping Tool that I had been using isn't available in the Win11 version.  Unless, of course, it is there and I just can't see it!  ;D

I only really want to do things like adjust the brightness/clarity and remove the odd spot from photos.

Can anyone recommend something that's both simple and free, please?

Thanks

Armed Forces / British Army conscription abt. 1950
« on: Monday 09 January 23 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anywhere I can read up on the process of conscription, please?

For instance, were all men conscripted to attend their local call-up centre and immediately allocated to a regiment, or was the allocation made only after basic training?

Also, I understand, of course, that the Army was able to transfer/second men from one regiment to another as they saw fit/the needs of any conflict dictated, but how likely is it that a man's request to transfer to a different regiment would be granted during his National Service, please?

I'm being told that a particular man was "conscripted into" Regiment A, but "requested to be transferred" to Regiment B "because his friends were there and he wanted to be with them", but without knowing more about the process I don't know whether this is just a family story or based on any sort of facts about the Army's systems at the time.

Thanks

Technical Help / Windows 11, Windows 11S or Windows 11Home
« on: Tuesday 27 December 22 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
I currently have a Win 10 laptop, but it's getting very slow, so I'm looking to get a new one.  I was expecting to see Win 11, but also see there are S and Home versions.  I haven't the faintest idea what the differences are (even though I've Googled and tried to read up), so don't know if it's relevant to what I use the laptop for (general internet searches, genealogy, inc. Family Tree Maker etc - i.e. no gaming).  My current laptop has five months of McAfee and Microsoft 365 left on it, so I could transfer those to the new one, I presume.

My question is - do I need to fret about whether my new laptop has Win 11, Win 11S or Win 11Home, please?

Any advice (keep it simple, please!) would be welcome.

Thanks
