The Common Room / Marriage of John Kelly & Mary Mulholland
« on: Friday 12 September 08 10:21 BST (UK) »
I've been looking for the marriage of my great grandfather, John Joseph KELLY to his first wife Mary MULHOLLAND for several years now with no success.
and have a few queries which I hope that rootschatters can help me with please.
Just to give you some details that I know:-
The only record I have of John and Mary together is in the 1871 Liverpool census where John is recorded as aged 36, a compositor by trade and born in Ireland.
His wife, Mary, is recorded as aged 34, also born Ireland.
With them are two children, Sarah Maria aged 1 and Thomas John aged 1 month, both children born in Liverpool.
I know from their daughter, Sarah Maria's birth cert. that her mother Mary's maiden name was Mulholland.
Mary has died before the 1881 census and John has remarried to my great grandmother, Mary Ann Reynolds.
I can't find any evidence of John's marriage to Mary Mulholland in the UK records (I searched from 1856-1871) so I suspect that they may have married in Ireland (it would almost certainly have been a RC marriage).
1) Am I right in thinking that a possible marriage in Ireland wouldn't have been recorded in civil records unless it took place after the mid 1860's?
2)Without knowing a county or townland in which the marriage may have taken place how feasible would it be to apply to the GRO Ireland for a search for a marriage between them (always assuming that it took place after civil registration of course!)?
John and Mary were both in their early to mid thirties when their children were born in Liverpool.
3)Assuming that the children mentioned in the 1871 census were the first children born to them, how usual would it have been not to have begun a family until they were in their thirties?
4)Should I be looking for an earlier marriage for either/both of them?
