The Common Room / Marriage of John Kelly & Mary Mulholland
« on: Friday 12 September 08 10:21 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for the marriage of my great grandfather, John Joseph KELLY to his first wife Mary MULHOLLAND for several years now with no success.  :( and have a few queries which I hope that rootschatters can help me with please.

Just to give you some details that I know:-

The only record I have of John and Mary together is in the 1871 Liverpool census where John is recorded as aged 36, a compositor by trade and born in Ireland.
His wife, Mary, is recorded as aged 34, also born Ireland.
With them are two children, Sarah Maria aged 1 and Thomas John aged 1 month, both children born in Liverpool.

I know from their daughter, Sarah Maria's birth cert. that her mother Mary's maiden name was Mulholland.

Mary has died before the 1881 census and John has remarried to my great grandmother, Mary Ann Reynolds.

I can't find any evidence of John's marriage to Mary Mulholland in the UK records (I searched from 1856-1871) so I suspect that they may have married in Ireland (it would almost certainly have been a RC marriage).

1) Am I right in thinking that a possible marriage in Ireland wouldn't have been recorded in civil records unless it took place after the mid 1860's?

2)Without knowing a county or townland in which the marriage may have taken place how feasible would it be to apply to the GRO Ireland for a search for a marriage between them (always assuming that it took place after civil registration of course!)?

John and Mary were both in their early to mid thirties when their children were born in Liverpool.

3)Assuming that the children mentioned in the 1871 census were the first children born to them, how usual would it have been not to have  begun a family until they were in their thirties?

4)Should I be looking for an earlier marriage for either/both of them?

World War Two / RAF Transit Personnel 22 PTC?
« on: Saturday 19 April 08 16:14 BST (UK)  »
Whilst looking through some of my father's old papers, I recently found this menu from 1945 which mentions RAF Transit Personnel 22 PTC and wondered what 'PTC' meant.  Hoping that someone can help  :)

I know that my father was in Aden at the end of WW2 and that he didn't return home until the spring of 1946.  Many thanks

The Common Room / No death registered 1865
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 11:25 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate some advice regarding the death of my 4 x great grandmother, Elizabeth CRANE (nee PARRY) in Cheshire 1865.

I have been searching for some time to find a record of her death.  Elizabeth was born in 1788 in Chester and married in 1811 to Francis CRANE.  The last record I have of Elizabeth is on the 1861 census when she was living with one of her daughters in Manley, Cheshire.

Finally, last week I found the image of her burial on the Familysearch Lab site.    :D  Elizabeth was buried in Ashton Hayes churchyard, Cheshire on 28th October 1865 aged 77years.

I then revisited Ancestry's bmd records and the freebmd site but I cannot find Elizabeth CRANE's death registered.  I have tried all the spelling combinations I can think of but still no joy.  ???  Any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheshire / Ashley Castle, Cheshire
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 08:20 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst researching my AMERIDITH ancestors in Devon I came across one (Judith) who appears to have been born "in of Ashley Castle, Cheshire" according to the Visitations of the County of Devon.

I don't know of any Ashley Castle in Cheshire and wonder if any other Rootschatters can point me in the right direction please?

I've been going round in circles trying to solve a discrepancy within my GODOLPHIN ancestors and am hoping that someone can hellp as I can't seem to see the wood for the trees!  ??? (Apologies for the mixed metaphors.)

I have only recently returned to this branch of my family - which Rootschatter, Gougy, gave me some great help with a couple of years ago.

Here is my problem:

My ancestor Ann GODOLPHIN was baptised in Jan 1695 in St Columb Major.

Her father was Francis GODOLPHIN (died Jan 1695, buried 5 Feb 1695 St Columb Major according to "Visitations of Corwall")

From various records (familyhistoryonline and IGI)  Francis was married to -
1) Grace CREWES (4th November 1672)
2) Frances BROWN (20 March 1684)

Children of Francis with Grace CREWES were: Anthony 1673; Jane 1677; Elizabeth 1681; Grace 1679 (died 1683)

HOWEVER!!  IGI and Visitations of Cornwall also list Grace as mother to: Edward 1687 (died 1688); Frances 1689; Edward 1692 and Margaret 1692.

BUT - familyhistoryonline lists Edward 1687 as father Francis, mother Frances.  Whilst Frances 1689; Edward (1692);  Margaret (1692) and Ann (1695) only have a father listed!

My first instinct was that the familyhistoryonline records must be correct and that Grace CREWES must have died in the 1680's but according to the IGI Grace did not die until May 1693

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me work out which children belong to which mother.

Renfrewshire / SCOTT in Paisley circa 1778
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help please  ???

I'm trying to find information about the family of (and especially the parents of) John SCOTT who was born circa 1778 in Paisley, Renfrew. (According to his 1841 census entry in Dalserf, Lanark.).  John, whose occupation was a weaver,  married Mary FERGUSON in Barony, Lanark in 1799 and so far I have identified these children:

William 1800 (born Glasgow, Lanarkshire)
Janet 1803 ( born Isle of Man)
John 1805
Thomas 1809-1809
Elizabeth 1810
Robert Moor 1812
Thomas 1814
Alexander 1816 (all of the above born in the Isle of Man)
Alexander 1819 (born Glasgow, Lanarkshire)

Any advice much appreciated  :)

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Cornwall parish records - sojourner
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 15:27 BST (UK)  »
I've just been checking through Phillimore's parish records for Cornwall and am wondering if someone is listed as a 'sojourner' might they just be from a neighbouring parish rather than from 'out of county'?  ???
