Roxburghshire / Thomas Elliot - COMPLETED (hopefully!)
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

This is a long shot... but I have hit a brick wall and could use some help to get started again.

My GGGG Grandfather William Elliot was illegitimate. He was born in 1811 in Castleton to Isabella Aitchison and Thomas Elliot.  I am wondering how to find out more about Thomas Elliot.  He is listed on William's death certificate as a Shepherd.  He is not listed as deceased on William's death certificate, but that could just be because the family didn't know if he was alive or dead at the time.

If anyone has any ideas of where to start, I'd be more than grateful.

Cheers,
Clare

Scotland / Ireland to Scotland - records?
« on: Friday 11 May 07 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Does anyone know if there are any records for Irish people who moved to Scotland after the 1901 census?  Were immigrants to Scotland recorded at this time i.e. 1901 to 1910 (ish)?

Cheers,
Clare

Lanarkshire / CHAMBERS & PENN
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 17:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Has anyone out there come across the family of James CHAMBERS (sometimes CHALMERS) and Elizabeth PENN (sometimes PAYNE)?

So far I seem to have found 2 sons for them - John born ca 1829 and Daniel born between 1827 and 1831 (age is vague in later records), but haven't had much luck with finding births for them, or any other children, and haven't had luck on the 1841 census.  In fact, I can't see Daniel until the 1861 census, but from then on I have marriage, death and census information for him.  I would be interested to get some more info on his parents and any other siblings that he may have had, as I have a feeling he may have been a slightly dodgy character  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Roxburghshire / Murray Muddle!
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 13:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am having some issues sorting out my Murrays in Hawick.  I think I have some conflicting evidence in certificates and census records (so what's new?!!), and I am hoping that by putting it all down in writing here either I can work it out myself or some of you wonderful people can help sort  it out.

Here goes...

My GGG Grandmother was Ann(a) Murray born circa 1854 in Hawick (have never found a birth record unfortunately).  Her marriage and death certs both show father as David Murray and Helen Murray, previously Clark, maiden surname Hardie.  So far so good...

I have Helen Murray nee Hardie's death certificate, which mentions no marriage to anyone called Clark, but this is possibly unknown to George Murray, her son who registered the death.

So to census records - my issue is matching the correct children to the correct parents as I think that Helen Hardie may have been David Murray's 2nd wife.  There is no mention of a previous wife, but the census records seem to suggest this.  I cannot find any record of marriages for David Murray and Helen Hardie/Clark or births of the children in the OPRs which is also frustrating.

David Murray died in 1860, so I started by looking for 1851 census, and found the following in Hawick:

David      Murray   Head        aged 50 (correct age to agree with death cert)
Helen      Murray   Wife         aged 36 (again seems correct for death cert)
James     Murray   Son          aged 20 (seems a little old to be Helen's)
George    Murray   Son          aged 8
Isabella   Murray   Daughter   aged 2
Robert     Hardie    Brother-in-law (presumably Helen's brother)
Martha    Hardie    Sister-in-law (possibly Robert's wife?)

In 1861 however, we find Helen as expected in Hawick, but the family are not quite as expected...

Helen      Hardie    Head              aged 46
James     Murray   Stepson          aged 30  (agrees with 1851)
George    Murray   Stepson          aged 18
Isabella   Murray   Stepdaughter  aged 12
Ann        Murray   Stepdaughter  aged 8
Janet      Murray   servant           aged 14
Betsy      Hardie    Sister             aged 28
Margaret Hardie    Daughter        aged 4 (Betsy's daughter?)
Helln       Hardie    Daughter        aged 2mo (again, Betsy's daughter?)

And going back to 1841 the most likely candidate seems to be the following, again in Hawick:

David     Murray   aged 40
David     Murray   aged 20
William   Murray  aged 15
Andrew  Murray   aged 15
James    Murray   aged 10

So which kids are actually Helen's?  And who was the mother of the rest of them?  And who was Helen's first husband?

To complicate matters, the 1851 census suggests that David Murray was born in Ireland, but the 1841 says he was born in the county.  I am getting to the point where I am not sure how to untangle them all ???

All help/thoughts/suggestions are welcome :)

Cheers,
Clare

Scotland / Census Question
« on: Friday 24 November 06 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a family listed in the 1861 census in Fife, Scotland, but the row detailing the head of the family has had a line drawn all the way through it.  All his details were filled in but look deliberately struck through.  His profession was Ship's Carpenter - is it likely that his wife gave the details but he was at sea, therefore the enumerator 'deleted' him, or is it likely to be something else.  I'm a little confused  ???

Cheers,
Clare

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / "Vanishing" Elliot Family
« on: Thursday 24 August 06 22:36 BST (UK)  »
 Hi there,

I am looking for any trace of one of my Elliot families, who I lose track of after 1893.  I am not sure if they left Scotland for England, Canada or Austalia (or anywhere else), but if anyone has seen any of them, I would be grateful for any pointers.

Details are as follows:
James Elliot (b. 22 March 1848 - parents William Elliot and Catherine/Christian Crozier) married Margaret Murray (b. ca 1854 - parents John Murray and Davina Lunn) on 6th Dec 1872 in Castleton, ROX.

They had the following children:
Devina - 11/01/1873 to 10/05/1896
William - died as infant in 1874
John -  died as infant in 1874 (twin of William above)
William - b. ca 1875
Catherine -  b. ca 1877
Elizabeth Murray - b. 22 May 1878
John - b ca 1880
Mary Cowan - b. 22 Aug 1882
Margaret - b. 3 Jan 1885
Agnes Jane  - 17 Oct 1887
Margaret Nicol - 14 May 1893

Has anyone come across any members of this family?  I lose track of them after the birth of Margaret Nicol Elliot.  I certainly cannot locate them in the 1891 census in Scotland so can only assume that they have moved.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi there,

Can anyone help me with the occupation on this census image?  I know the first word is Woollen, but after that, I am not sure what the abbreviation is.

Cheers,
Clare
