Armed Forces / Can anyone identify this badge please?
« on: Saturday 29 March 08 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Scrimnet kindly directed me to this forum because I have a badge that needs some identification.  My grandfather served in WW2 but we have very little knowledge of where and no knowledge at all of with whom.  I know we can obtain this information from the services now that he has passed away, but they require details that we just don't have.

Anyway, as a starting point, here is the somewhat blurry picture of the badge, and then my granda in his portrait shot.  We DO know that in 1941 he journeyed to Ireland to meet up with his crew, because a long told family story is that my grandmother followed him there with my baby mother in his arms.  But that is all I know.  Yes, he was of Irish descent, but born in Scotland.

and granda

Thanks for reading,

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can she be by herself please?
« on: Monday 11 February 08 01:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Not that I don't like the photo the way it is, but I was wondering if someone could please edit the photo so that it is just of my Granny?  When I do it, it is only of her head and looks odd, and I don't have the drawing skills to do anything else.

Thanks in advance.

« on: Sunday 06 January 08 13:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am hoping someone can restore this wonderful photo of my Granda taken somewhere in Europe in WW2.  He used to ride that bike all over the place during the war.

Ayrshire / William McTurk MI

Hi all,

I stumbled upon quite a good MI at my local cemetery and I thought someone might be looking for these people.  I took a photo, so if anyone wants to see it, just PM me.

The MI is for William McTurk who was born in New Cumnock in 1810, his daughter Margaret, born New Cumnock 1838 and Margaret's husband James Rakine Gibb, born about 1826, no place given.  The MI is in Victoria, Australia.

Lanarkshire / Robert Martin Laird MI
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 01:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

While scrounging around my local cemetery I found the resting place of Robert Martin Laird born 1886 in Scotland, and who married Margaret Boag.  I think they married in Calton Glasgow in 1923 according to Scotland's People.  He died in 1926, after travelling to Australia, I presume.

I have a photo of the MI.  If anyone would like a copy, please PM me.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Is there anyone?
« on: Monday 11 June 07 04:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a modern photograph which was sent to me via email and which I would rather not post.  I thought it was a fantatic photo until someone (who hasn't seen it) suggested to me it was probably photoshopped and therefore fake.

So my question is....is there anyone on this board, who knows how to spot a photoshopped photo?  And if there is, could I please PM my details to you so that I can send it on for you to have a look at?

Occupation Interests / "Gutta Purcha Worker"
« on: Saturday 26 May 07 23:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Going back over records I found my gggrandfather had the occupation of "gutta purcha worker" in the 1861 census in Glasgow.  I probably laid this aside at the time for future investigation, but forgot about it.  A quick google led me to revise the spelling to gutta PERCHA, and seems to have been a product like rubber from a tree.  According to Wikipedia, it was used to make anything from furniture to golf balls.

Gggrandfather went on to be a hammerman, but I thought it was interesting to have had a different kind of employment.  I imagine not too many people had this employment at the time.

I wonder if there was some kind of factory in Glasgow where he might have worked?

Anyway, I just thought I would share this, as I hadn't seen it before.

United States of America / Jane Christina O'Brien to New York
« on: Friday 13 April 07 03:52 BST (UK)  »
IHi all,

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to search for Jane Christina O'Brien born 1874 Glasgow Scotland.  She disappears from Scotland after 1881.  There is most definitely no death registered for her in Scotland, nor marriage, so I am thinking she may have managed to leave the country at quite a young age.

England / 1940's death
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 01:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Can anyone tell me how to find a 1940 death registration?  I have a Camillo Francesco Granelli born in East Coventry in December 1939 who had died by 1941.  Father was Camillo Francesco Granelli, mother Nettie or Jane, m.s. Easton.
