Armed Forces / ID required to join army in 1884
« on: Monday 09 November 20 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon, would a young man joining the Royal Artillery in 1884 have to produce documents for ID purposes?

The reason I ask is my Great Grand Father joined up in 1884 under the surname of DONLAN however we now suspect this could be an alias or indeed false info.

Thankyou

Armed Forces / 1st foot/8th regiment Kings
« on: Friday 11 September 20 15:15 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon. I am trying to locate service details for my Grt. Grand-Father, Daniel KENNEDY.
Born 1841, Tipperary, Ireland

I have a GRO copy of his marriage on 1st Sept 1868 in Malta. His occupation is stated as Sgt 1/8th regiment.
I have enquired with the museum of Liverpool who have advised that they have no records, however they appear to only have researched WW1 & WW2 which are outside the dates he would've served.
By 1891 he is retired from the Army and holds the position of the Chief Warder at Corradino Prison in Malta (details from his Daughters marriage certificate)
He died on 17 Feb 1923 in Malta.

I would be grateful for any advice, hints etc on how to track his service record and his position at the prison down.

Europe / MALTA: Surname Terry - is this the anglicised form of SCERRI/XERRI?
« on: Wednesday 27 May 20 14:31 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my Grt Grt Grandfather, Daniel KENNEDY who married a Theresa TERRY on 01/09/1868 at the Garrison, Valetta

I have viewed other information that suggests her maiden name could be SCERRI or XERRI.  Would the register show the Anglicised version of the Maltese name?

The Common Room / Merchant Seaman - where will I find his records
« on: Sunday 03 March 19 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon.  I am trying to find out more about my 2x Great Grand Father, Robert Rump THURSTONs time as a merchant seaman.
He was born 3 June 1852 in West Ham.  After his father died on 14 Oct 1870 he went to sea as a  merchant seaman and he made his way to India.
In 1879 he married Eva Georgina Leach in India. On the Marriage certificate he is shown as "Preventative Officer" - was this a police type roll?
I have found him listed as a purser of the steamer Japan in 1888 via "The Directory & Chronicle for China, Japan, Corea, Indo-China, Straits Settlements, Malay States, Siam, Netherlands India, Borneo, the Philippines, &co
I have been unable to find any further details.  I would really like to know how he got to India & when and how he died.  Any help appreciated.
