Family History Beginners Board / Royal Irish Constabulary

I am a tad puzzled at this one. I have an ancestor recorded as Police Constable on a marriage certificate I have just received. His name was Terence Gargan from Kilkenny b.1813. He married in Kilkenny too in 1848. I have found his service number 1590 which is very early and means he enlisted around 1834/35. I have been looking at the register held by UCD, personnel register, but it starts in 1837 and cannot find him under 1590 anyway.

Am I looking in the right place, does anyone have any tips? Any pointers as ever greatly appreciated.

My ancestor John Reilly b. Liverpool 1858, married Ellen in is listed in the 1891 and 1901 census as Station master and station master railway. Is there a register of railways etc. I would love to know where I could some further info. I have a great picture of him too with a military bearing and huge moustache. Any pointers as ever appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Where else can I look??
« on: Monday 05 February 18 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have a relative Edward Giggins b. 1802 to John Giggins and Letitia in Croyden, Surrey. Letitia died in 1802 presumably giving birth to Edward. Edward is then the father of Joseph Giggins b. 1827 and he also appeared at Josephs later wedding to Susan Dockerill in 1845. They went on to have loads of kids who are my ancestors.
I can find no record of Edwards marriage nor of Josephs christening. I have found a record where he has a son Edward in 1850 with a spouse called Newell Clarke but I don't know if that is my Edward! Newell seems to be born in 1829, same year as Joseph, so if this is correct he obviously married again much later to a younger woman.
I have looked for all variations as it is an odd name, on all the usual places, what am I missing? Is there anywhere else I can root out information on Edward? I have Edwards parents names and he must be Josephs dad but it would be nice to find his wife and Josephs mother.

Family History Beginners Board / The Maltese Connection
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a relative who cites her place of birth on 1861 and 1871 census as Malta! 1834. A Mary Richardson.
She had a son here in England in 1853, William Joseph Edgar Newman, Sculcoates (Hull). GRO confirms maiden name for Williams mother as Richardson, Mary on the census forms. I can't find trace of her marriage to a Newman here in England either.
William, her son, appears on 1871 census in Bristol listed as son to Mary Simpson and five new Simpson kids. Presumably determined to find his mum now he is 18. So I presume her first husband died in Malta, Crimean War? She came back to Hull, gave birth to William and left him with his/her grandparents. She then went to Plymouth and married a William Simpson in 1856. She named one of her children Maria, a nod to her mother perhaps?
Its a good story but I would like to track her Maltese roots and first marriage, presumably a serving soldier/sailor in the Victorian services in the Crimea.
Whats it like trying to track Maltese relatives, can anyone give me a pointer or two. I think I've found a lot but the Malta connection has me stumped.

Family History Beginners Board / Can't locate family on GRO
« on: Wednesday 06 December 17 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking for birth records for the HARRIS family, three children of James and Clara Harris. Edith May, Cecil James and Leslie Percy. James and Clara appear on the 1901 census with the first two kids, Edith 2 and Cecil 3/12, and then again on the 1911 with Leslie aged 7. I can find no record at all of the children's births, nor of James and Clara's marriage. So I can't get Clara's maiden name. It is very frustrating and I have tried all sorts of variations but with no luck.

Can anyone suggest why none of the children appear to have been registered? Cecil was my Grandad.
