Monmouthshire / Missing Smallman found!
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
While my Nan was still alive she was pumped for family info and stories and despite some of them being a bit muddled I have managed to find/prove  all but two. One related to Nan's parents who she said had 7 children, the first died after he was born and was buried in Ross-on-Wye, where they lived. They were unable to afford a gravestone for him. Nan didn't know his name.

My Mum had heard this story, her sister hadn't, and I couldn't find any trace of him, so he was put to one side. Today I have been looking up baptisms for Ross on the Forest of Dean website and there he was.......Harold John Smallman christened 7.4.1906, buried at 5 weeks 18.4.1907. I'm so pleased to be able to add this little one to my tree and finally give him a name.

Never give up ;D

Technical Help / user name change problem
« on: Monday 22 September 08 08:01 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this is in the correct place, but I seem to have a problem changing my user name. I did it a week or two ago, it seemed to work, but then when I logged in again it had gone back to my old user name. I then logged in again and it was my changed and new user name, so I thought all was ok. I have just logged in today and it's reverted to my old user name again. Are there gremlins in the works or is it just me? What has gone wrong, can anyone help?

Occupation Interests / Why did a pork Butcher just sell pork?
« on: Friday 01 August 08 08:45 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who was a pork butcher. Looking at Google, it seems, as the name suggests, that a pork butcher sold all things pork related. But why? Didn't they have beef or poultry? Or were there beef and poultry butchers too?

Does anyone know the answer?

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / 1841/51 Census - Richard SEAR
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 16:06 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help find the following family who I believe were living at Breakspeare, Leverstock Green, St Michael Rural,Herts (part of Hemel Hempstead) in 1841/51.

Richard Sears b c1800 Hemel Hempstead, Herts
Maria (nee Rolph) b c1806 Hemel Hempstead

I'm trying to find out if he was a baker by occupation as I have a William Sears who on his marraige cert 25.11.1856 gives his Dad as Richard Sears and occupation baker. I'm having trouble finding this Richard Sear/s

My William was born c 1828 Hemel Hempstead and I have him in the 1861/71 census married and living in Clerkenwell, Middx. I'd give anything to find his Dad Richard.

Lanarkshire / Spence family, Avondale, Lanarkshire. Help needed!
« on: Tuesday 10 June 08 15:28 BST (UK)  »
My 2x Great Grandmother was Margaret Spence b 23.11.1836. She married thomas Todd in London and as this is my direct line I have of course got the details to present day! In 1881 Margaret's sister Jeannie Spence was living with Thomas and Margaret in London as there Housekeeper. She was not with them in 1871 or 1891. On Thomas and Margaret's marraige cert one of the witnesses was James Spence, and Margaret's father was listed as David Spence, a farmer. So I knew Margaret's fathers name and two of her siblings.

Other details I have are:

Extract from Old Parish register (marraiges) for Avondale
10.7.1819 David Spence married Janet Hamilton, so that's the parents.

Extract from the Old Parish register (Births) for Stonehouse.

David Spence cattle dealer in Burnhead and Janet Hamilton his spouse had children born:
Janet 18.4.1820
Robert 12.8.1822
James 29.8.1824
David 4.10.1826
Ann 8.12.1828
William 12.12.1831
Alexander 31.8.1832
Elizabeth 12.12.1834
Margaret 23.11.1836
Jean 14.2.1841
Andrew 16.5.1843

According to Family Search David Spence was b c1794 Avondale, Lanarks and Janet Hamilton was b c1798 Avondale, Lanarks.

Eldest daughter Janet Spence 1820 married William Young and I have their details to present day, having been in touch with their descendant.

Son James Spence who was on sister Margaret's marraige cert turns up in London with his family so I have a few details on him.

Having rambled on with all of this, what I'd like to know is HOW I get back further with David Spence and wife Janet Hamilton. I know there are Scottish sites, but I can't afford to use them at the moment and have to go for any free sites. I'm also hoping somebody may have a connection with the family or have a suggestion on what I could do to get back further.

Lanarkshire / General Enquirey about Scottish research
« on: Tuesday 10 June 08 11:33 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if there are any FREE sites, other than Family Search, where I might be able to trace some of my Scottish ancestors. I've gone back so far and am now stuck.

Looking for John harris b 1847 Chard, Somerset (age 44 in 1891) and wife Elizabeth b 1847 Melcombe Regis/Weymouth, Dorset, Middx (age 44 in 1891). In 1881 they lived at 20 Benn St, London, Middx. In 1881 John was a Boot Finisher.
I believe a grandaughter, Louisa Harris aged about 4 may have been with them.

Is anyone able to trace the family and give me the details of the family?

I have an Elizabeth Bowering b c1846/7. In 1871 she's with her husband John Harris in Melcombe Regis and gives her birthplace as Melcombe Regis, in 1881 she lives in london and gives her birthplace as Weymouth.

Can anyone trace Elizabeth and the Bowering family in the 1851 census when she'd have been about 5 years old. I don't know who her parents were so it's a bit of a long shot.
