Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Richard White of Beaulieu
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 16:42 GMT (UK)  »
Richard White b Beaulieu about 1780 moved to Devonshire and married Sarah Prowse Smale, a widow, in 1809. He was variously a timber merchant or dealer and a grocer, depending on the census, and deid around 1870.

He was a close friend, or possibly a cousin, of James Woods of Lyndhurst, who also moved to Devonshire, and was married to Sarah's sister Jane Prowse.

I would appreciate some help in identifying the parents of Richard White, difficult for me as the Beaulieu parish records are not indexed in the IGI.

Thank you

Australia / Mary Helen/Ellen MACKENZIE
« on: Sunday 14 March 10 14:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in finding out more about this family:

Mary Fraser, b abt 1823 in Inverness or Ross&Cromarty, Scotland
d/o John Fraser and Helen Grant
m 25 Apr 1846 in R&C
David Mackenzie, no info other than that he was a professor
of Mathematics in 1877 when his daughter was married

Their daughter Mary Helen Mackenzie was born about 1849 in Victoria Australia
She returned to England to attend school (she was in Kent in 1861) and was married in London.

So I am curious about:
   1. when David and Mary arrived in Australia, and where they lived,
   2. how long they stayed, or if they died there,
   3. if there are any death records for them, and
   4. whether they had any other chidren, and if so, what happened to them

Incidentally, a brother of Mary Fraser`s, William Fraser (b abt 1821), also went to Australia. I know nothing at all about him, whether he was married, or what he did. But if it happens that he went with Mary and David, or ever lived with them, I would like to know that too.

I am fairly sure that both Mary and William were both dead by 1902, because in my great-grandmother`s obituary, dated 1902, only two sisters Mrs Smith (Scotland) and Mrs Rally (Canada) remained alive.

I have already obtained some info from RootsChat (Scotland):

Thank you for any additional help you can provide.

Inverness / Mary Fraser and D Mackenzie
« on: Friday 12 March 10 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
Mary Fraser, d/o John Fraser and Helen Grant was born about 1823. She reportedly married a D. Mackenzie and had a daughter Mary Helen Mackenzie, who married a George Brodie Clark and had a son Ernest Herbert Brodie Clark. No dates for this were provided in Major Alpin's Ancestors and Descendents 1904, the source of this info. I am unable to verify any of this, or find dates.

The IGI has many Mary Fraser -- D Mackenzie marriages.
The IGI gives two Mary Helen Mackenzies, both d/o Donald Mckenzie and Mary Fraser, one b 1853 in Inverness and the other 1847 in Lochbroom, Ross&Cromarty. Both are possible

There is an Ernest Herbert B Clark born in Middlesex in 1879 and the census record for 1891 is tantalizing; his parents are George Brodie Clark, solicitor, and Mary H B Clark, but she was born in Australia. It`s not impossible that Mary Fraser and D Mackenzie went to live in Australia, but it does seem unlikely that the daughter would have come back.

Any help or insights would be appreciated.

Inverness / Ann Fraser and Robert Munro
« on: Friday 12 March 10 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
Ann Fraser, d/o John Fraser and Helen Grant was baptised in Inverness 22 Aug 1802. She married a Robert Munro of Jamaica and reportedly "had issue" ** but must have died before 1830 as her parents named a much younger sister Ann in 1830. I've not been able to find them in Scotlands People or any census.  Looking for info about her children and when she died.

Thank you

Scotland / Robert Beattie and Mary Anne Moffitt
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 01:32 BST (UK)  »
Robert Beattie was born around 1810 in Scotland, married Mary Anne Moffitt (b abt 1810) around 1837, and then had their children all around the UK -- Samuel 1838 in Paisley Scotland, Robert 1840 in Ireland, Eliza 1843 in Isle of Wight, and four in Essex (he was a police officer). I would love to find info on their births, parents, etc. No idea which county they came from, except that Samuel was born in Paisley. Have tried Scotlands People but no luck. Thanks

Essex Lookup Requests / Sophia Russell, St Mary the Virgin, Chelmsford
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 00:57 BST (UK)  »
Sophia Russell was married in this church in June 1811 and was called a "spinster of this parish". We'd like to find her baptismal info and names of parents if possible. She was born around 1791 (from ages in censuses and death on FreeBMD). No parents on the marriage register; witnesses were James and Elizabeth Shuttleworth.

All help gratefully acknowledged.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Richard White of Beaulieu
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 17:49 BST (UK)  »
In the 1851 and 1861 censuses, Richard White living in Thorverton Devon gives his brithplace as Beaulieu, Hampshire (he'd be born around 1781). Beaulieu is not indexed in the IGI. I have found a Richard White, s/o George White and Mary, b 1780 in Lyndhurst, but I am wondering if someone could consult Beaulieu parish records for me, to see if there is a Richard White born there as well. Any info on a marriage between George White and Mary?

Thank you.

Ayrshire / Snodgrass in Broadstone Hall, Beith
« on: Thursday 31 January 08 05:33 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to track down ancestry of John Snodgrass who ended up in Largs (see Dumpling thread), and finding some references on Rootsweb to Snodgrasses born in Broadstone Hall, Beith, but they don't appear in the IGI or anywhere else. Anyone know anything about Broadstone Hall, Beith? Why would the records be separate from those of Beith?

Thanks, Mary

Midlothian / Smith or Ross-Smith family of Edinburgh
« on: Saturday 19 May 07 00:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down members of the Smith or Ross-Smith family of Edinburgh. They are descended from James Ross Smith, born 5 Mar 1865 in Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland (son of Andrew Smith and Jane Elizabeth Fraser, sister of Anne Fraser, my great-grandmother). He married Olive Edith Tetley and had several children including Ian. He died in 1939. Ian is my fathers second cousin and I am hoping he will know something about the family history in Scotland.
