London and Middlesex / George Hay brickwall back from his will in 1823
« on: Thursday 25 August 22 08:06 BST (UK)  »
I've struggled with my 3xgrt grandfather George Hay for years. I have a copy of his will proven in 1823 which names some family but haven't been able to find anything based on the names it contains. I'm trying to find clues to his wife, parents and three of his four children.

Transcript of the 1823 will;

This is the last will and testament of me George Hay of No 10 Clerkenwell Green in the County of Middlesex Clock and Watch Maker that is to say I give and bequeath to my mother Barbara Hay the sum of forty pounds to be applied by her in such manner as she shall think best in or towards maintenance and bringing up of my youngest daughter Sarah Hay and as to all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate & effects whatsoever and wherever I give and bequeath the same unto my Brother in Law Thomas Bates of ? Dorogate Hill [it might be Ludgate, badly transcribed] upon trust by sale to convert into money such part of the said Residue of my Estate as shall not consist of money and by and with the same and my ready money in the first place after payment of all expences attending such sale to pay all my just debts funeral and testamentary expences and subject thereto to pay or apply the Residue for the use and benefit of my three other children namely George Hay Jane Hay and Frederick Charles Hay in such manner as the said Thomas Bates think best and most eligible and I nominate and appoint the said Thomas Bates sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the eleventh day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three George Hay Signed sealed published and declared by the said George Hay the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us James Mc Kash Jacob Evans

Proved at London 18th April 1823 before the Worshipful Jesse Addams doctor of Law & surrogate by the oath of Thomas Bates the sole executor to whom admon. Was granted having been first sworn dult to adm.

The son named George in the will was baptised in 1810 at Clerkenwell, mother noted as Mary. Later documents for him consistently quote 1810 and Clerkenwell birth details including census & coastguard application. I also have three marriage certs for him each noting his father as George, clock and watch maker. Several unsourced ancestry trees have his mother as Mary Unknown 1794-1810 and his father as George Hay 1794-1839, somewhat surprising given the 1823 will.

The Lighter Side / Remarkable timing eh?
« on: Tuesday 16 August 22 08:42 BST (UK)  »
Just days after sending an invite to my tree that would open up a whole new family to someone their tree suddenly goes private, my invite is declined and I no longer have the option to invite them or send messages. What are the chances?

The Lighter Side / It's taken 17 years but..........
« on: Saturday 30 July 22 22:39 BST (UK)  »
A couple of weeks ago I finally managed to find a close contact to a half brother of mine born in the 1950's. A few days passed until they broke the news to him and a further few days for it to sink in before he sent me an email. This week we swapped phone numbers and the 'quick chat' we planned ended up being a 90 minute phone call.

In the 17 years I've been searching for him I've found and contacted several other half siblings, many have met with each other and the rotten buggers have nicknamed me 'Cilla'. There are rumours of another 4 though no indication of where, when or names. I may be dragging myself into the modern world and going down the DNA route in an effort to try and answer the questions family rumours pose. Whether I will succeed or not is unknown, lots of things beyond my control for sure but I won't give up searching.

Family History Beginners Board / Mary Ann Hewitt or Stor(e)y?
« on: Thursday 03 March 22 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
My big nightmare, Mary Ann Hewitt or Stor(e)y, the daughter of a Susannah Alice Chambers or whatever she decided to call herself at the time.

The mother was born Susannah Alice Chambers, baptised in 1836 in Lincoln, daughter of George and Sophia. The family darted back and forth between Lincoln and Worksop for a spell after some trouble with the law and she is never with her parents in a census;

1841 Lincoln; as Allice Chambers in the household of Charlotte Espin (her aunt).
1851 Lincoln; as Alliss Chambers, housemaid in the Issott household

1858 Worksop Marriage of Susannah Chambers to John Story Hewitt
1861 birth of Mary Ann Hewitt mmn Chambers in Worksop

1861 census for Bath St, Great Grimsby has a John  Hewitt and Susannah Hewitt, both aged 25, Mary Ann Hewitt aged 2 months (the only way to find it is an address search on FindMyPast, household schedule 167B, a name search does not work).

1871 things start to get strange;
Baget Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield
William D Storey Head - Male 32 b Lincs
Susannah Storey Wife - Female 30 b Lincs
Mary A Storey Daughter - Female 10  b Notts
Charles Foster Visitor - Male 52 b Lincs

1876 Marriage in Sheffield

Susannah Storey, widow daughter of George Chambers to William Foster, widower, son of Charles Foster.  Witness names are not known family.

1881 Census 57, Candow Street, Attercliffe cum Darnall, Sheffield
William Foster Head Married Male 39 b Beverley, Yorks
Susannah Foster Wife Married Female 40
plus two lodgers

1891 Effingham Street, Rotherham
William Foster Head Married Male 48  b Frodingham, Yorks
Susannah Foster Wife Married Female 50 b Lincoln, Lincs
Thomas Chambers Nephew Single Male 19 Kimberworth, Yorks
William Coldron Nephew - Male 2 1889 Yorks

The Coldron and Chambers family are known relatives and seem to cement this as being the right Susannah.

I've lost Mary Ann after 1871, I'm not sure what surname she used. There is a marriage in 1883 for a Mary Ann Storey to a Frederick Foster, her father noted as William Foster. Following her through the census she appears in Worksop in 1891, Sheffield in 1901 and 1911 but the mmn in the bmd for the kids and the mother in 1901 suggest it's the wrong Mary Ann. Hubby Frederick Foster is consistently a chair maker so I'm confident it's the same family throughout 1891-1911, just not convinced it's the right family.

It's a really confusing family hence adding the bits for Susannah but what happened to Mary Ann?

Family History Beginners Board / What happened to Eliza/Elizabeth after 1918?
« on: Tuesday 14 December 21 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
I've lost a relative after 1918.

Born Eliza Chambers in 1892 in Lincoln, baptised as Eliza Graby Chambers at Lincoln in March 1903. Dob on the baptism record is 29th Jun 1892, parents George Henry and Sarah Jane.

Marriage cert 1st Oct 1918 at the Register Office, Lincoln;
Elizabeth Graby Chambers, spinster aged 26 to Ernest Brace aged 33, widower.
Father of the bride George Henry Chambers.

After that I'm stuck, there is a possible son registered in Guildford in 1921 but no other births with the right surname combination. (I don't have the 1921 birth cert as proof they were there and the death of an 11 year old by the same name in 1932 ain Edmonton RD on freebmd is a red herring, the record is actually for a 66 year old man).

I'm struggling to see anything close for Eliza/Elizabeth and Ernest after the marriage in the 1939, bmd or migration records.

George Chambers Head - Male 74 1797 - Lincolnshire
Sophia Chambers Wife - Female 70 1801 - Lincolnshire
John Chambers Grandson - Male 18 1853 - Yorkshire,
Annie Chambers Granddaughter - Female 11 1860 -
Edward Chambers Grandson - Male 6 1865 - Nottinghamshire, England

1881 Census

Elizabeth Coldron Head  1828  Barlings,
George Coldron Son Married 1860  Lincoln,
Walter Coldron Son Single 1864  Lincoln,
Edward Chambers Nephew  1864 Labourer  Worksop, Nottinghamshire,

I know that Elizabeth Coldron was born Elizabeth Chambers and is the daughter of George and Sophia from the 1871, based on the two census returns showing Edward born in Worksop it should be easy to work out his parents but I'm really struggling.

I thought this was his birth ref;
CHAMBERS, EDWARD    mmn WHITLAM
GRO Reference: 1864  D Quarter in WORKSOP  Volume 07B  Page 24

Dive into the marriage index and there's a marriage that looks good, it's a couple of years earlier and just a few miles away in Retford ;
Marriages Jun 1858   (>99%)
Chambers    Bilby        E Retford    7b   9
JOW    George        E.Retford    7b   9
Pettinger    Hannah        E. Retford    7b   9
Pettinger    Hannah Clarke        E. Retford    7b   9
Whitlam    Ann        E.Retford    7b   9

It all falls down when following the census as Bilby Chambers married Hannah!

George and Sophia had several children including 3 sons I've never quite been able to work out;  I can never find them in the census as George and Sophia were in trouble with the law and the last son was born in the house of correction.

John Espin Chambers b1825, Langworth nr Wragby, Lincs
An un-named son in the GRO index; CHAMBERS, - mmn ESPIN GRO Reference: 1838 J Quarter in LINCOLN UNION
Uriah John Chambers b1841 in the Folkingham House of Correction

Am I missing something really obvious with Edward born in Worksop? Have I mistakenly thought the Edward in 1871 and 1881 are the same person? Was he just not registered or does he belong to one of the mystery sons?

London and Middlesex / Missing marriage record 1843, advice please
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 20:14 BST (UK)  »
I have a couple of newspaper articles noting a marriage in 1843 but haven't been able to find a GRO ref for it. I've tried the usual sites, tried forenames only, surnames only, full names and every combination of bride and groom separately and together I can think of.

Short of some real mishap between the local registrar and creating the GRO index I'm stumped. I think the local registrars are probably my best bet  but it's not an area I do a lot of research in.  I'm floundering a bit with the churches that might be relevant before trying the local reg office.

Copy of the article attached, marriage date would be 8th Oct 1843.

The couple had a son the following year with a Middlesex birth reg and are in Middlesex in 1851.  Martha is a widow in Lincoln in 1861,  living with her sister and brother in law and dies at their Lincoln address in 1864

United States of America / Lockport NY birth and death around 1914
« on: Thursday 24 June 21 03:24 BST (UK)  »
Several members of my Chambers family covering three (or more), generations are buried in an area of Glenwood Cemetery. The burials are recorded in adjoining graves in Section 5, Lot 60-62, graves 1-8. Another burial has come to light;

April 23rd 1914, Frances J Chambers, child, Lot 60-62 grave 5 1/2 (five and a half).

I can find the burial on familysearch but I'm unable to find a birth for her, when she was born or work out who her parents are.

I've found a married Caroline Smith of the right age at the spread Eagle in 1911, no sign of George in 1911 but I have no idea where/when he was born though the 1908 marriage cert states he is 21.

I can't find anything for Caroline or George after 1911.
