Lanarkshire / Daniel FRENCH of Lanark
« on: Monday 05 November 07 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

can anyone help me with a check on a Daniel French (middle name possibly McAlpine) born 1812 in Lanark.

I have seen a number of Ancestry.Com entries on him which have him baptised on 16 March 1812, son of Daniel French and Janet McKay.

Daniel French and Janet McKay married in Lanark on 31 July 1808 according to Scotland's People but I can find no record there of any children to them, so I'm wondering where the Ancestry references came from.

I do have a record of Daniel Jr. marrying an Isobel Whitton on 30 January 1831. In about 1841 they arrived in Sydney with two children.

The Ancestry material takes Daniel's people back three more generations (via Daniel French/Janet McKay - DanielFrench/Margaret Weir - William French/Elizabeth Calderhead - Daniel French/Margaret Gillfillen). I've seen SP parish records on those marriages and births. But I can't be anywhere near confident about a link without some official record of the Daniel of 1812 and his parents.

Any suggestions will be most gratefully received.

Offaly (Kings) / MAHER and FARRELL and ROURKE
« on: Sunday 05 August 07 05:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

I am trying to find the backgrounds of John Maher and his second wife Hannah Farrell, possibly from around Roscrea.

John Maher was born around 1814/15, the son of farmer Charles Maher and his wife Jane, maiden name unknown.

In about 1842, he married Margaret Casey, daughter of Thomas Casey of Roscrea. They had two children. Jane, born about 1844, and Charles, 1846, born at Ballydonagh. Margaret died sometime after that and John remarried.

About 1851, he married Hannah Farrell, daughter of farmer Timothy and Margaret Farrell, nee Rourke, and in November that year they sailed from Plymouth to Australia.

I posted this a while back on the Tipperary board, but am told I should really have been looking in Offaly. If anyone has anything on any of the names here, I would be most grateful.

Cheers

Fife / John DOUGLAS and Isabella CRYSTAL
« on: Sunday 05 August 07 04:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm hoping somebody can help me track the background of my g-g-grandmother Isabella Anderson, maiden name DOUGLAS, born in Fife in January 1830.

I have both her wedding and death certificates which have some conflicting information.

The marriage certificate, from Feb 1856, lists her parents as Alex Douglas and Isabella CHRYSTAL. Father's occupation is unreadable. A witness is a Janet Douglas, possibly a sister.

The death certificate, from 1899, names her father as John Douglas, a labourer, and mother as Isabella CRYSTAL. It says she came to Victoria, Australia, 45 years before, so around 1854.

So if anyone has anything on the CHRYSTAL/CRYSTALS and DOUGLASes, I'd be most grateful

Lanarkshire / John McKERLIE and Janet WEIR
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 04:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for anything on John McKerlie, born 1834 in Lanark, Scotland, died aged 49, on 1 January 1883, at Clunes, Victoria Australia.

His death certificate lists John McKerlie, gardener, as his father, mother unknown. It says he married in Scotland, aged 23, so therefore was born circa 1857.

He married Janet Weir, born circa  1823, in 'Scotland' (that's all her death certificate shows), died aged 83, on 2 May 1906, in the Benevolent Asylum, Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. Parents unknown.

I have not been able to find anything on either of them and would like to be able to trace back.

Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Henry GIBSON and Lydia ADAMSON of Cleckheaton
« on: Sunday 22 July 07 06:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find  anything on Henry Gibson and Lydia, nee Adamson, lodging house keepers in Leeds in the mid 1800s.

In 1851 I have
Henry, 33, head, Lodging House Keeper, b: Rothwell, Yorkshire
Lydia, 35, b: Hartshead, Yorkshire
with
Joseph, 6, b: Leeds
Fanny, 3, b: Leeds

In 1861, Lydia, 48, widow, is head, commercial housekeeper
with Fanny, 13,
Ann Adamson, sister, 41, b: Hartshead.

Joseph Adamson Gibson, in 1861, is an apprentice enginesmith, a visitor in the home of George and Mary Washington in Leeds. He came to Australia in 1874.

I am hoping to find both Henry and Lydia's parents. I tried tracking Ann in 1841, with no luck, and Lydia, who possibly appears, aged 30, as a milliner, visitor to Leeds, but nothing else. So if you know anything of the Gibsons of Rothwell and the Adamsons of Hartshead, i'd be most grateful.

« on: Friday 13 July 07 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

can anyone help me with anything on Thomas Pryn and Elizabeth Perry, married in Bodmin in 1849?

They soon after emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, where their son William is listed as being born 1852. Thomas, born circa 1827, died 1907 aged 80.

Hi, I'm looking for anything on:

Elizabeth Jane Fry, born circa 1855,
to
Frederick Fry, born approx 1810-15, a brewer,
and
Ellen Fry, nee Seymour.

The family moved to Tasmania soon after Elizabeth's birth, I believe. I'm unsure if they had other children at the time.
Any clues on any of them most appreciated.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / POLLARD-COCK of Redruth area
« on: Monday 09 July 07 03:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone have anything on the whereabouts of a Thomas and Elizabeth Pollard, nee Cock, married circa 1833?

I'm tracing a g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Pollard, who married Abraham George in Redruth in 1852.

In the 1851  census, I found an Elizabeth Ann Pollard, 17, a tailoress, living  with a Margaret Cock, widow, at 230 Roach Row, Redruth.

In 1841, aged  7, Elizabeth Pollard is listed as living with a Margaretta Cock, 55, and a Jane Cock, 20. Margaretta/Margreat is her maternal grandmother, born c 1786, nee Penberthy and married to a William Cock on 20 August 1803 at Redruth.

Elizabeth, who married Thomas Pollard was christened 29 January 1804, the first of eight children.

Thomas, son of John Pollard and Ann Williams, I believe, was christened 5 Sept, 1812, the last of five children.

What I'm hoping to discover is what happened to them following Elizabeth Ann's birth in 1834... And how she ended up with her grandma

And if anyone has any more on her grandparents, I'd be grateful too
