Armed Forces / Army Regiments in Essex, maybe Chelmsford, 1801
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 03:27 GMT (UK)  »
A convict ancestor of mine, was tried at the Essex Assizes at Chelmsford in July 1801.

He was Henry PICKETT and together with his co-offenders was described as "another soldier". Since I have little knowledge of his UK life events this is the best clue I have had. He married (Mary) before he went to Australia arriving there on March 11, 1803, and maybe had a male child also. He died in 1806.

So I'm asking if it's possible to find out what regiment may have been in the area at the time, so I can then try to access his military records! I guess a dishonourable discharge is on the cards!
In case other names help, his co-offenders were John Hight, William Worley, and Richard Packer who was the informant - no honour among thieves!

Thanks for any help in what's probably an impossible task.

Lanarkshire / Cemeteries - Lambhill specifically
« on: Tuesday 20 November 12 04:41 GMT (UK)  »
Is it my understanding that in Scotland via a local authority you cannot get any formation on a burial online?
In New Zealand we can locate a burial online in most all local authorities.
I'm trying to find the burial record of below:
"Retrieved from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ on 31 Oct 2012
1989  ONGLEY PATRICK AUGUSTI[NE];  [mother's maiden name] MCKEOWEN;   M; 70;
GLASGOW, MARTHA ST; GLASGOW CITY/LANARK; 601/00 0622; No Image"
I believe from another source http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,451639.0.html  specifically the 3rd to last thread, that he was buried in Lambhill.
Is there a way without physically visiting the cemetery that I can find any specific details of his burial?

Thankyou

The Lighter Side / If you can't write/type English, the...
« on: Tuesday 20 November 12 04:23 GMT (UK)  »
I've made a resolution to not reply to any posting from anyone who cannot use a keyboard or use the English language or punctuation. Here's just a little example:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,616.0.html
The only comprehensible posting there is the Administrator's.
Surely most of us have been brought up with a modicum of the language.
I think we should all make a resolution to not reply to any posting that is totally incomprehensible without going through it word by word. And we should tell the poster such. As an example, read the last posting in the sample above as is without stopping. See! And that is multiplied by numerous postings throughout each day on Rootschat. Surely, if the art of a Forum such as Rootschat is communication, the basic thing is to speak/write/type the language comprehensibly.
I speak New Zealand English and I can get it right!

Census and Resource Discussion / 1911 Census County Kerry, Ireland - cross-outs
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
One line of data has been crossed out on the image but it has been transcribed.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Killeentierna/Ballybeg/270608/
The tally of alive and dead children is correct with this child included, as one child has already died. I have birth and baptism details for all of these children. The one crossed out was born 31 Jul 1909.
What would be the usual reason for such a cross-out?
Thanks,
Bryan

Update: There is another child on the 1901 census, Mary aged 9, which complicates matters. The count of children alive or dead at 1911 doesn't compute now.
So at age 19 in 1911 Mary has moved on, to be married in New York much later, I've discovered. But not calculated on the children numbers.

England / Weiss, White, Wills
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 06:04 BST (UK)  »
As a preface the variants (above) of this name may be used. The son used Wills.
Dr (a GP) Karl WEISS and his wife Helene nee PERUTZ arrived from Vienna into the UK in 1938, together with their son Stefan. I have "Exempt from Internment" records for the parents. Karl is living in London with the son, his wife in Southwell, Notts. I know the son's history.
I cannot find any records of the deaths of the parents. I originally thought they may have gone to Israel after the war, but given the latest information (below) of Helene's death in 1942, I am not so sure.
I have a family tree record from elsewhere saying Helene died in 1942 - no other detail.
I am then looking for death/burial information for Karl and Helene Weiss.
Thank you

Tyrone / Moses FITZPATRICK, b circa 1819, Beragh
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 06:04 BST (UK)  »
Moses, I believe was an RC priest. I believe he served as a curate in 1846 in Stewartstown (Ref: Slater's) and later in Beragh (1850-1852). I've calculated his birthdate as 1819 from his immigration record to New Zealand in 1861 (aged 42), where he is cited as a school teacher/ farmer. Whether he is a priest at this stage I do not know. I lose track of him from here - either to Australia or remaining in NZ.
There is an index of correspondence for the Diocese of Armagh here for 1850/51- a great resource for RC/cleric matters for the period:
http://tinyurl.com/9ooufc7
From 1852 to 1861 there is no information I have on his whereabouts.
I believe from other records that most of his family were around the Legacurry, Beragh area.
His siblings were John, Thomas, Sarah as far as I know, his father is probably John born about 1780.
My questions:
1. Knowing the difficulties, is it possible to confirm his birth/baptism date?
2. Are there any records or sources in the RC church to confirm his ordination as a priest? Was it worthy of a newspaper report?
3. These days I'm used to referring to priests as "Father" but I note that Moses is often referred to as "Rev Mr". Was this a title reserved for curates as I know there was quite a hierarchy?
And also after his name in the above correspondence reference are the initials C.C.? Any ideas?
Thank you

Europe / German translation - Birth Register
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 05:40 BST (UK)  »
Good day
Would someone have a look at this and translate for me please? I don't need the names but just what's being said about them! It's a register of births from Vienna.
The particular item is the second on the page, item 1746, Stefan. Many thanks. Send via message if it's easier.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Lookup request emigration from Austria to UK
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 02:28 BST (UK)  »
Could someone help me out with this please?
I have Karl (Karel) WEISS and son Stefan in the UK (London), and Karl's wife Helene (in Nottingham) in 1939 (Info from Exemption from Internment documents). Their child was born in Vienna in 1911. I'm assuming the parent's marriage was around that time - I have no date. There doesn't seem to be other children. They were Austrian Jews.
Is it possible to find out when they arrived in the UK? They remained in the London area.
Thank you,
Bryan

Nottinghamshire / Parrot(t) Family, Mansfield, 1841 Census
« on: Monday 14 May 12 05:33 BST (UK)  »
Good day all,
I haven't had any luck finding this family in the 1841 census (searching on FamilySearch).
I have a number of births, deaths and marriages for the period 1728 - 1802. My main man is William Parrot, born 1802, who was transported to Australia in 1817. I have his ancestry tentatively back 2 generations to 1728.
But I would have thought that as I have births around 1800-1811 on this lineage I would get some appearing in the 1841 census in the same area. But a search on FamilySearch for the 1841 census gets no Parrot(t) records for Mansfield at all and my line is not the only Parrot(t) family in the area.
There are a number of other Notts references, but I can't believe that everyone has left the district in the ensuing years.
Any help would be appreciated. First names are John, William, Samuel, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Charlotte - all 'attached' to Mansfield.
And as a PS if anyone has access to William's conviction details at the Quarter Sessions in 1817, I would love to have the details of how bad he was - he was bad enough when he got to Australia!

Regards and thanks
