The Common Room / Old Encyclopedia
« on: Sunday 06 May 12 17:48 BST (UK)  »
long shot I know... I'm restoring an old Encyclopaedia given to me by my Grandfather, but it's missing pages from the front and rear and I'm hoping that someone might recognize the description or diagrams and maybe have a possible title and/or date ?

It's about A4 size and approximately 3 inches / 8 cm thick and bound with a type of metal and wood binding, a bit like an old form of ring binder but with pins and hinges instead of rings. The timeframe seems to be just before the first world war as there's no mention of it, and the latest datable event in it that I can find is the building of the RMS Majestic c1914.

The sections include the following :

  Marvels of Chemistry & Physics
  Romance of British History
  Wonders of Land & Water
  Wonders of the Sky
  Marvels of Machinery
Wonders of Animals & Plant Life

The diagrams were what impressed my from the beginning - lovely drawings of plants and animals and cut-aways of various machinery. Some thumbnails :

I've uploaded a few scans to Flickr - see : Image 1 , Image 2 , Image 3 , Image 4 , Image 5

thank you,

World War One / William H. Dormer
« on: Tuesday 24 April 12 19:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking into an ancestor of a colleague. William Henry Dormer born 1897 in South County Dublin. He is believed to have served  with the South Irish Horse. The only record I've located so far is a medal card which fits... Could someone decode the details or suggest where to search for further details on William ?

William H. Dormer

 Corps/rank/reg no.
 S. Ir. H. / pte / 1142
 C of Hrs / /  74090

 Medals/Roll/page
 Victory / CY/141 B / 3102
 British / " / "
 15 Star / CY 2 B / 787

Theatre of was first served in 1.
Date of Entry therein : 22.11.15

  remarks  :  AS/CC/460
  B.104-117  04[?] 4-12-23 (1915 Star)

Also included is an address which fits the area his family lived.

There's a medal card for another William Dormer without the middle initial with seemingly similar service..

p.s. William survived the war and married later in Dublin.

thanks,

Shane

Ireland Resources / Link: Calendar of Will & Grant books (RoI)
« on: Saturday 17 March 12 09:15 GMT (UK)  »
Calendar of Will and Grant books for the Republic of Ireland are now available on the National Archives website from 1923 up to the early 1980s. Earlier Calendar years are listed but will not allow access to any document at present. See the National Archives of Ireland website : http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search-the-archives

Details include name of deceased, address of deceased, date of death, date of application for grant of probate or letters of administration, grant type, date on grant issued, name of grantee , value of estate, name of issuing registry.

Claire Santry has some tips for accessing the collection on her blog

Here's a direct link to the collection which works for me.
Click on the year of interest, and the page refreshes and scrolls back up - the link will look something like :

Digital document Calendar of grants of probate of wills and letters of administration 1934.pdf

You can open this in your browser or right-click and save to your PC. Most of the files seem to be between about 40 and 100mb.

thanks to pinky of boards.ie for the update

Ireland / Dead Money - RTE
« on: Thursday 01 March 12 10:19 GMT (UK)  »
might be worth watching as it sounds similar to Heir Hunters - starting 7pm Tuesday 6th March RTE1, Dead Money

Steven and Kit Smyrl genealogical legal researchers who track down the heirs to unclaimed estates. In Programme One, Steven and Kit's efforts to find the relatives of Dublin woman Maura Byrne reveal a tale of horror and tragedy, from the squalor of the inner city tenements in the 1910s to the sad abandonment of a young boy in an industrial school.

Australia / Search for Death Cert
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 15:06 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for a death cert for my gtgt-grandfather in NSW - possibly Sydney area, but dont have many details on him, so dont think I can use the usual Index or transcription services. Is there any way to search NSW Death records for possible matches using just name, date of birth (or age + date of death), and place of birth ?

My errant gtgt-grandfather Henry Wilson abandoned his wife and children around 1895 near Leeds, Yorkshire and apparently was later traced by the Salvation Army to Sydney - where they lost track of him. Henry's father died when he was young (about 6), and the father's details on Henry's marriage in 1867 (Leeds) are mixed up - so I dont think reliable enough to use for a search.

The only consistent details I think I could depend on for a match would be his Name, his place of birth of Chatteris, Cambridgeshire (England), and his date of birth of 19 Sept 1844. He started off as a bricklayer, later a Master Bricklayer and then builder. Before his disappeared from England he was also involved in owning or running a pub...

thanks,

Shane
