Dorset / Emma Painter of Wareham/Poole
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 18:48 BST (UK)  »
I have tried to find Emma for years with no success whatsoever, but now I believe I have her at last.  The point is, the lesson I have learned is 'consider everything'.

In the Census records she mostly claimed to have been born in Poole but once only, she said Wareham.  To her family she claimed to be Irish, sometimes from Dublin, but mostly from Cork.  The only fact that she stuck to was 1838, the year of her birth.

Finally, I discovered a previously overlooked entry in the Wareham, St Mary Parish records, all became clear.  31 Mar 1838 Emma (blank).  No Mothers name and no Fathers - it was quite sad.  No trace of her in the 1841 Census, but I found a Caroline Painter, in the Workhouse aged 20.  Two Painter/Payntor families were in Wareham at that time, but no Emma with them.  No Emma in Poole Census.

Was she a foundling ? or just a workhouse infant who needed to be baptised.  Where did these babies go, was there a home nearby or in Poole, or was she taken in by another Painter family in the district.

She completely reinvented herself when she came to Poole, rather than admit she was base born.  She was quite a town character, could not read or write but set up with her sweet shop in Lagland Street.  She was known as 'the Irish Granny' total fantasy.  When she married Peter J Way At St James, Poole. Sep 1857, she would have had to produce a birth cert and on the records she claimed her Father was a Farmer Joseph Painter of Shapwick.  I did find an Emma in Shapwick, born 1838, but she died when she was 10 yrs old.  Endless searches for a Joseph brought nothing.  I have not been able to find an official record of her birth and this did not become compulsory until 1900 ?.

Can anyone help find Emma in 1841 or subsequent Census records.  Is there a likely Home she may have been taken to or the Workhouse ?  Any help or pointers in the right direction, would be really appreciated.

Quaker Family History / Quakers in Dorset
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Is ther anywhere online that I can access Quaker record ?

I am having great difficulty in tracking my Way, Strong and Painter ancestors.  Rumour is we had Quakers who travelled from Bridport to Poole, and I wonder if ithis is the reason why I can't find them.  It is the Painters of Poole that I just cannot find anything but one marriage.  Emma Painter born abt 1838 in Poole, did marry Peter Way Sep 1867 at St James Church Poole.

I have found a Mary Way of Netherbury who married a prominent Mormon and they founded the 'Arizona Mormons'.  The rumour could have come from Netherbury.  I found Way's and Strongs living in Netherbury, who then moved to Bridport.  The problem is finding the link to more recent people.

So, I really would appreciate any help regarding Quakers.

Dorset / ORCHARDS of Winfrith
« on: Tuesday 25 July 06 12:21 BST (UK)  »
Some time ago there was a discourse online about the Orchards and it was such a help to me, especially Deborah.  Sure saved a lot of grief.

I have only one problem, I have a
William Orchard bapt.21 Feb 1779 son of Robert and Elizabeth
and a
William Orchard bapt. 3 Mar 1779, son of John and Mary

eeek!, which one is my William ?  What methods can I use to work it out ?

I was doing great up until the marriage and offspring production of William Orchard 1779 marriage to Hannah Trent.

Can anyone help ?  How far have the Orchard researchers managed to get ?

Hopeful Roz

Kent / Orphanage in Sittingborne
« on: Tuesday 04 July 06 10:09 BST (UK)  »
 ???
Can anyone give information on an orphanage in or around Sittingborne  in the early 1900's.

My friends Father was taken there about 1907, when he was 4 years of age.

Where would the records be kept and how difficult is it to see the records.  We only have his Mother's name to go on.

His Mother did visit initially but the visits stopped and she never came back for him.

Any input would be appreciated.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Census difficulties
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 23:58 BST (UK)  »
Tried the 1901 Census without any luck.  We know my husbands relatives lived at Frindsbury and Strood.  Henry John Lacey was born 1885 at Frindsbury - his Father may have been a Henry James or a William.

Going into the 1901 Census, I can only find an ancient William, who may or may not be connected.  I do recall a deceased relative, muttering about a Castle ?  Henry may have been 'in service'.  Is there a castle in the vicinity.  Anyhow, they were away from their home town when that Census was taken, but they did return.

My other query is, are there newspaper resources.

Henry had a daughter Clementine who was married to (they think) a man called Peter Christopher.  He had a boot repair shop and sometime during the WWII - towards the end, he was murdered in his shop and the culprit was never caught.  The shop was in Strood.

If anyone can help on either matter, I would appreciate it.

Dorset / For Rebecca - Rootschat Senior-re Byron
« on: Friday 12 May 06 23:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rebecca

I saw in another Topic that you often go to Hampreston ?

I have been trying for many years to make headway on the Byron family of Hampreston.  This brickwall has been the thorn in my side, but not the only one.

Edmund Byron and his wife Mary, were bith born in Hampreston.

Edmund    1760
Mary          1766

Richard       1784
George       1785
Amelia        1786
Thomas       1787
Charles       1789
James          1790

For reasons unknown, they up and went to live in Poole.  James became my Gt/Gt/GFather.  No other Byron's to be found anywhere else in Dorset at that time.  I had to abandon hope of ever finding out where this family came from and indeed, where they went.  They just vanished - all those male members and I have not been able to get a trace of them, apart from Thomas, who was a blacksmith in Poole, during the 1841 Census.  James sister Amelia married what could have been a Belgian or Frenchman.  His name was Clerick, which could have been a bad spelling of Clerk, but they too vanished.

Last week, by sheer accident, I found the burial record of Edmund.  He died in Poole, but was buried in Hampreston- presumably with his wife.  He was buried on 27 June 1831 at age 80.  I think that was wrong as previous record show he must have been 71.

I have search high and low, but I don't know where they came from and where they went.  No one else is seeking this family either.  The parents must have lived in Hampreston - where are Edmund's siblings ?

My hope is, that if you have time you would do me the tremendous favour of looking in the churchyard for me.  I believe that I have exhausted any available paperwork.

Hope you can help.

Dorset Resources & Offers / Link: How Dorset folks lived
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 01:12 BST (UK)  »
For anyone with ancestors in East Dorset - in particular Powerstock and Bridport, Please go to http://www.dorsetbooks.com/harry/index.htm  Delightful booklets that were written many moons ago, by Mr Harry Poole.  The booklets are out of print and can only be read online.

Your folks may even be mentioned - a real source as to what their lives were like and Harry has done a grand job in doing most of the research for us.

Dorset / stories of Powerstock and surrounding areas
« on: Wednesday 02 February 05 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst browsing for books on Dorset, I discovered a delightful site.  There are little local history books which are no longer in print but can be read on this site.  They are written by Harry Poole and contain a wealth of info with names etc. in particular Powerstock but other villages are mentioned.  e.g. 1883 Fred Hansford, flogged at school for bullying.  Charles Riglar named as the laziest boy in school.  1890 Fanny Hansford sent home for disobedience and impertinence.  All great stuff.  Nothing changes.  Go to www.dorsetbooks.com

Australia Lookups completed / The Harringtons of Kent
« on: Monday 13 December 04 00:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Caroline Arrington or Harrington and her daughter Rosie, who emigrated to either New Zealand or Australia.  I have a lovely photo of Caroline with Rosie.  Caroline was born in 1888 to Charles and Mary Browning in East Peckham, Kent.  She married a Mr Arrington or Harrington who was also from Kent.  She had at least one child called Rosie and they emigrated in the 1920's or 30's.  I have not been able to find a single trace of them and don't know where to start.
