The Common Room / John Luffman Another attempt to demolish the brickwall
« on: Thursday 15 December 22 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
My earliest certainly known ancestor is my 2xgreatgrandfather, John Luffman who died in Alford Lincs in 1823. He came to Alford with the Somerset Fencible Militia in 1794, and left his unit there to marry.
That much is certain, but a 25 year search has so far failed to find where he was born, and wh his parents. I have suspects, but am reluctant to disclose them it this posting to avoid "muddying the water."  According to his discharge documents from Kilmainham hospital (he had further military service after his marriage) he was born in 1776 at York, but this is unconfirmed. The fact that he was with a West country unit and had enlisted in Bristol suggests otherwise. The death notice in the Alford newspaper says he was born in 1762, no location given. His age on marriage in 1797 (21) apparently confirms the 1776 date.
Does anyone have access to something that I have missed or other newly published information?
Thankyou.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Copperplate handwriting
« on: Monday 02 May 22 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Though I have just found my father at around the 4th attempt, I feel I should draw attention to a problem ongoing from the 1911 census, that is the transcription of a capital L in copperplate handwriting
My father Sydney Harold Luffman was b 1899 and has so far appeared in 3 censuses, the first in 1903 2 days after his mother's suicide, as Harold Luffman. I would imagine everything was confused in the household, and the mistake is foregiveable/ On the death of his 74 year father (he was 3) he moved to his mother's sister's family, and I found him after some considerable searching in 1911 named Suffoma, that copperplate L taken as an S, but I found him.
Tonight, knowing where he should be I searched tomight no luck, but finally located him lodging with an aunt in Boston, all details correct, railway fireman 22, surname clear, but shown as Suffe. Once again copperplate strikes. Please be warned. Luckily I have his precise date of birth so it was relatively easy, Christian name, year of birth and location. 141 to pick from round about No.30. £3.50 paid, but where is the address on the entry I have bought. Cant see it.

The Common Room / James Ayres of Bottisham (Lode) Cambs. b1889
« on: Tuesday 07 December 21 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
James, my great uncle was born at Lode in 1889 the 11th and final child of James Ayres (1844-1923) and Emily Cornwell (1850-1941). He appears in the 1891 and 1901 censuses there in Lode at the family home, but that is his final appearance in a UK census.
There is a story widespread across our family that he emigrated to Australia in 1903,and the date is clearly documented by this short anecdote. Immediately prior to his departure he visited his brother and sister in law Samuel Ayres (1868-1935) and Melinda nee Brignell (1872-1953) who was pregnant with her third child, my mother Emily (1903-2003), on leaving he said "If its a boy, call him James after me". My mother Emily was known as Jim throughout her life as a result!!
I was told that there had never been any contact between the families again.
Until I started research and found:
1) that he had not left the UK until 20th December 1910, and arrived in Australia in 1911.
2) he had been in regular contact by letter with his older sister Elizabeth (1886-c1970) with whom we were also in regular contact.
On arrival in Australia (Sydney) he was described as a farmer,
so the question now becomes where was James between 1903 and 1910?
I suppose there is a possibility that he tried to migrate between 1903 and 1910, it failed at he had a second go later, or alternatively that he worked on a farm in the UK during the interim period.
Any information would be very welcome. Thank you.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / A DNA coincidence?
« on: Monday 25 January 21 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
The big list of DNA matches came through from FTDNA with over 2,000 matches of varying degrees. I had never yet had a match on my own surname until now. There was a lady who had a 61cm match with me. As a result I emailed a person who has my surname in the same area. Result she is the ex wife of his son. So the DNA link is either through my mother's side, or my father's maternal side. Quite coincidental I think.

Cambridgeshire / Marriage outside the permitted bounds Ayres-Ayres
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 19:01 GMT (UK)  »
At sometime in the late 18th century the oldest son of one of my Ayres ancestors married his aunt, who was the youngest daughter of her husband's grandfather. The marriage therefore would be Ayres to Ayres, but though I recall entering it some years ago, I am quite unable to find it. I am wondering if the cause is the susceptibilites of Legacy or an error by myself? Anyone help please.

The Common Room / John Luffman, Soldier and Weaver
« on: Tuesday 20 October 20 20:27 BST (UK)  »
My 2x great grandfather, John Luffman had a Military career from 1794 (Somerset Fencibles) to 1811 (Regiment of foot whhich became Lincolnshire Regt). His discharge document from Kilmainham hospital stated that he had previously been a weaver. This would be in Dorset, Somerset, or bizarrely Yorkshire. What records are there of 18th century weavers?

Australia / Male descendants of Joh Triton Luffman b India 1846
« on: Saturday 15 August 20 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Subsequentlly John migrated to Australia.
The following appear to have been his grandsons all b Wilcannia NSW

John David           Luffman b1912
Frank                   Luffman b1914
William Alexander Luffman b1914
Ronald Alan          Luffman b1917

There are apparently marriages for all except Frank.

My interest is if any of their descendants in the continuous male line have taken a Y chromosome DNA test as due to possible illegitimacy in the late 18th century I am uncertain of the identity of my 3x great grandfather.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / York. St. MARY'S Castle Gate Dade Register
« on: Friday 17 July 20 18:45 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access I am looking for a possible baptism of John Meatyard (Meechard or similar phonetic) possibly even Luffman. baseborn son of Betty from March onwards 1776,  Dade register. Details greatly appreciated. If its there it ends a 24 year brick (or granite?) wall blockage.
