The Common Room / Going up the social scale...
« on: Friday 14 October 11 01:08 BST (UK)  »
... from my usual Ag Labs & Coal Miners!

1901  RG13/67510941

I have a Civil Engineer living in Coverdale Lodge with his wife & three servants (later census shows this to have 12 rooms)

Next door is Coverdale Stables, where the head of the house is a Coachman.  Is it reasonable to assume that he would be employed by the Civil Engineer?

Just been watching Michael Wood's Story of England Episode 5 on BBC4 (hopefully repeated on iPlayer)

Towards the end, there is a demonstration of framework & Griswold knitting, which might interest anyone with FWKs in the family

Completed Census Requests / *****COMPLETE********Baptism 1831
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 16:28 BST (UK)  »
I have found the following baptism - single entry

20 Mar 1831 (born Feb 13) Deptford St Paul, child of Samuel & Caroline Bewley

Agathe.
Abagtha
Esther  1.10

Can anyone offer any thoughts on the origin of the names and what the 1.10 might mean?

In subsequent censuses, she is always called Agatha but is living with her aunt Ann Rall

When I import a gedcom file into FTM 2011 it very helpfully tells me the number of individuals and the number of families

Does anyone know how 'family' is defined?   ???

Added - and how I find the earliest person in a family?

When I click on these options, I get a long thin window, which I cannot resize.  And I can't see the fields to enter the data   ???

It doesn't matter whether I use the old or new search to arrive at the record

Any ideas anyone?  Please?   :)

TIA
