Hertfordshire / Burial Records for St. Nicholas' Church - Stevenage
« on: Thursday 23 October 08 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Hallo,
Sorry for the long post but I am wondering if anyone out there can help me solve a problem that is part family tree part current dilemma.

St Nicholas Church Stevenage aka The Old Church has, in common with many old churches, at existing graveyard.  Many of my family are buried there.

I am looking for one grave in particular but cannot find it.  Ages ago I was at the Records Office and made a note of the burial so I have the details but not the site of the grace.  The Vicar cannot help me and I am at loss as to know what to do.

It isn't as though the burial took place 10s of years ago.  It was only in 1932.  The burial in question was my great-great-grandmother and the reason I particularly want to find out is because my late grandmother expressed a desire for her ashes to be buried in the same grave.

We have an alternate solution as back up but I really would like to find this grave if I can.

Of course there is no marker or tombstone which makes an on the spot search no good although we have looked just in case.  I have found records for other churchyards in the course of my FT research that show the sites of ancestors' graves in the 1800s so I know that such records must exist somewhere.

I have wracked my brains over how to find out and then this morning thought "why not try Rootschat where I do a fair amount of family tree research!"

And just in case you are sitting there with a plan of the St Nicholas churchyard (with graves marked) by your side  ;) here are the details:

Agnes Gardiner aged 82
buried 21 November 1932 by Charles Morgan Smith.  No 631 page 79 Burials of Stevenage Parish

Agnes' husband James was also buried in the churchyard:
James Gardiner aged 60
buried 27 April 1910 by R W Croft.  No 148 page 19 Burials of Stevenage Parish

Any help or advice would be most welcome and if you can get hold of the details then I would be delighted!
Kirk
PS
I live and work in Germany so I can't do a lot of on-the-spot research at the moment

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Randal Flude - elusive 'gent'
« on: Saturday 18 October 08 21:09 BST (UK)  »
Hallo,
my ancestor is Randal Flude and he is an exceedingly difficult character to track down.  ;)
He was born about 1747 according to various calculations and his wife was Mary Smalley.  I presume he was living in the area of Desborough (Northants) or one of the surrounding villages.
When their son James got married he said that his father was a Gentleman but I doubt this.  He may have been a well to do farmer as the Fludes seemed to be a relatively prosperous lot.
I am trying to find when Randal and his wife Mary died.  They were definitely alive in 1796 when their (I believe) last child was born but I am pretty certain that they were dead by 1841 although their son doesn't say Randal was deceased when he married for a second time in 1842. . .
I have posted a request in the Northants room but I am also posting here because the Fludes moved fairly easily back and forth between there and Leicesters. and were well connected in the Langtons.  Their son was born in either East Langton or Church Langton (he couldn't remember which) but baptised in Desborough. . .
I am wondering if Randal and Mary were buried in their home parish of either East or Church Langton. . .
Any help would be very welcome.
Thank you
Kirk  :)

I am going to post a duplicate of this request in the Leicestershire room too as the Fludes moved fairly easily back and forth between the two counties. . .

New Zealand Completed Requests / Kate Rees
« on: Friday 26 September 08 16:16 BST (UK)  »
Hallo,
I am trying to locate Kate Rees.  Her maiden name was Leahy.  Her husband was George Manning Rees and she died, I believe, in New Zealand, sometime around 1880 or at least between 1874 and 1890 as the family spent four years in New Zealand during the time.
I do not have much in the way of extra information except to add that Kate was born in Richmond, Victoria in c 1851.  Her parents were William and Mary Leahy.
The family seem to have moved to New Zealand some time after 1874 but when George died in 1890 he was back in Melbourne and a widower. . .

Any help would be most welcome.   :)

Thank you

Kirk

« on: Friday 26 September 08 14:29 BST (UK)  »
Hallo,
This is purely a shot in the dark. ;)

There was a family living in London whose surname was Tweedy/Tweedie.
In the 1850s the parents died and leaving these surviving children:
Margaret Ann Blythe b.1828 Edinburgh
David b.1830 Edinburgh
James b.1832 Edinburgh
John b.1834 Edinburgh
Jane b.1835 Edinburgh
Peter Ross b.1841 London  m to Martha Ann Mantel in 1863
William b. 1842 London

Margaret m William Tristram Carver and remained in London.  Jane was in London with them until 1851.
Peter and Martha are last heard of in London in the 1861 census.
The others apparently disappear after their mother died of cholera in 1854.

I am wondering if any migrated to New Zealand. . .

Midlothian / Isabella and James Tweedy
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 14:18 BST (UK)  »
Hallo,
My 3x great grandmother was Isabella Tweedy nee Ross.
She was born in Edinburgh in 1808 and died in Heanage Street London, a victim of the cholera epidemic in 1854
She had been married (1827) to James Tweedy (c.1790-1851)  but was a widow at the time of her death.
The family were tailors and tailoresses
She had the following children according to the 1841 and 1851 London censuses:
Margaret b.1828 Edinburgh (recorded as Margaret Anne Blythe)
David b.1830 Edinburgh
James b.1833  Roskeen
John b.1834 Edinburgh
Jane b.1835 Edinburgh
Peter b.1841 London  m (I beleive to Martha)
William b. 1842 London

Margaret was my gg Grandmother but I do not know what happened to the other children.  Can anyone help?  I am going to post this on the London List too but I wonder if some of them returned to Edinburgh.  The only things I am pretty sure of is that James Tweedy stayed in London and Peter married someone called Martha and was last heard of (if it is him) in 1871 census in London. . .
I know it may be a long shot but any help or advice would be very welcome!   :)
And while I am at it, if you have any ideas about James Tweedy's parents that would also be a very useful!  ;)
Thank you
Kirk
