Hertfordshire / Burial Records for St. Nicholas' Church - Stevenage
« on: Thursday 23 October 08 16:17 BST (UK) »
Hallo,
Sorry for the long post but I am wondering if anyone out there can help me solve a problem that is part family tree part current dilemma.
St Nicholas Church Stevenage aka The Old Church has, in common with many old churches, at existing graveyard. Many of my family are buried there.
I am looking for one grave in particular but cannot find it. Ages ago I was at the Records Office and made a note of the burial so I have the details but not the site of the grace. The Vicar cannot help me and I am at loss as to know what to do.
It isn't as though the burial took place 10s of years ago. It was only in 1932. The burial in question was my great-great-grandmother and the reason I particularly want to find out is because my late grandmother expressed a desire for her ashes to be buried in the same grave.
We have an alternate solution as back up but I really would like to find this grave if I can.
Of course there is no marker or tombstone which makes an on the spot search no good although we have looked just in case. I have found records for other churchyards in the course of my FT research that show the sites of ancestors' graves in the 1800s so I know that such records must exist somewhere.
I have wracked my brains over how to find out and then this morning thought "why not try Rootschat where I do a fair amount of family tree research!"
And just in case you are sitting there with a plan of the St Nicholas churchyard (with graves marked) by your side here are the details:
Agnes Gardiner aged 82
buried 21 November 1932 by Charles Morgan Smith. No 631 page 79 Burials of Stevenage Parish
Agnes' husband James was also buried in the churchyard:
James Gardiner aged 60
buried 27 April 1910 by R W Croft. No 148 page 19 Burials of Stevenage Parish
Any help or advice would be most welcome and if you can get hold of the details then I would be delighted!
Kirk
PS
I live and work in Germany so I can't do a lot of on-the-spot research at the moment
