I am looking for information about the Dragon Hotel in Welshpool (not the one in Montgomery). In particular, who the owners were in 1915 – 1916. I am trying to establish if there is a family connection with Fred Bowen who gave that as his permanent address on his WW1 records. His daughter was also born there (in 1916).
Thank you

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Frederick Arthur BOWEN
« on: Monday 01 March 10 10:19 GMT (UK)  »
Correction:

We now know his name was Frederick Arthur BOWEN born about 1887, place unknown. His father was William Bowen, sailor. He married Alice Mary Reese in Walthamstow in Dec 1912. During WW1 he was a Red Cross Ambulance Driver. Alice moved to Welshpool where he joined her after the war. His connection with Powis Castle was through his father-in-law George Reese who had been gardener there.

In 1912 he gave his occupation as Groom. I am looking for
1) where he came from
2) his parents, and
3) his whereabouts between 1901-1911, in particular did he work at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire?

Any hints, tips or clues gratefully accepted!

Many thanks

Ireland / How to find Oxford brothers if they died in Ireland?
« on: Monday 08 February 10 11:41 GMT (UK)  »
Three brothers, William, Thomas William and Frederick Oxford from a Wolverhampton fairground family, disappear from view in the 1910/20s.
No death records can be found in England, Wales or Scotland.
Their mother was of Irish origin (maiden name Brannan, possibly from Cork) so it is possible they went to Ireland. Tried IFHF; no luck but I understand their database is not yet complete?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thank you.

I would appreciate it if anyone who has access to the electoral rolls for the area would look up 32 Jersey Street, Velindra, Aberavon in the period 1919 until 1922 and if possible until the 1930s.

On 31 March 1919 Thomas William OXFORD gave that as his home address when he was discharged from the army. We are trying to find out how long he lived there. In September 1921 he was (still) in the area as he sent back a receipt for his war medals, postmarked Porthcawl. His address at that time is not on the receipt.

Many thanks

Europe Resources & Offers / Finding Dutch ancestors
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
For anyone lucky enough to have Dutch ancestors – I say this being half Dutch, so I could be biased! – you will find an amazing amount of information on the Dutch national database Genlias. For those of you for whom the language may be a bit of a challenge, it is also available in English - http://www.genlias.nl/en/page0.jsp.
Happy hunting!

P.S. If you have any trouble with it, send me a personal message and I will try to help.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Looking for John Winson from Epping, Essex.
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
John Winson born about 1791/2 in Epping, Essex turns up in Llanyblodwell, Shropshire where he married Mary Jones in about 1818/19.

We would like to find out who his parents are and where they came from.
The IGI lists John Winson christening 16 MAY 1756 in Epping and David Winson christening 25 DEC 1761 in Epping. Could one of them be his father?

Any advice or guidance greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Did Thomas William OXFORD die in Milford Haven?
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 17:39 GMT (UK)  »
Grandfather Thomas William OXFORD (born 1880 in Wolverhampton) married Minnie Jessica SIMMONDS in Milford Haven in Dec.1917. Their only son George William was born there in Nov.1918.
Thomas William supposedly died before or soon after his son was born. However there is evidence to suggest he was still alive in 1921 in Neath/Port Talbot.
We are trying to find out when and where he died. Current evidence suggests it was probably in South Wales, Pembrokeshire or Glamorgan.
Thank you.
